  1. I'm a bit younger. Anyone remember the Comanche series? I started out with Comanche Maximum Overkill and went through Comanche 4. Classics =) I remember mashing keyboard keys to figure out what did what since I didn't have a manual or internet access. I also remember my little brother shooting down his wingman because he's color vision deficient (wingman's radar signature is green, enemy tanks are yellow.)
  2. I'd like to echo that I found activation to be a major pain as well. I've changed hardware multiple times (CPU upgrade, GPU upgrade) and am down multiple activations as a result. Yes, I should unactivate it. No, I don't remember to go unactivate all my copy-protected programs before upgrading. This is irritating and a major limitation to legit users. And the thing is, I pirated BS before buying it. I wanted to make sure it would run on my computer, so I downloaded, installed and tried it out. Then I hopped online, bought a legit copy and uninstalled the pirate. So the protection doesn't really work anyway. If I ever reach the point where I'm out of activations, I'll have to go right back to pirated copies. There has GOT to be a better way than this.
  3. I've long been confused as to the Shark's role on the battlefield. To put it simply, I die a lot and seem not to kill very many enemies. I've read a fair bit throughout the forum about this topic and it's given me a bit of insight as to where the Shark should be and what it should be doing. I've had difficulties with the Patrol mission for awhile now. I would always try to hide in the mountains and pop up from behind hills for a quick pot shot with a Vikhr. The problem there is that the Shark's nose pretty much always blocked my view of the target. At any rate, I tried a different approach this time. I assumed that I either have some sort of cover from fast movers or that they simply aren't a threat in the area. With that, I took a more leisurely approach to the mission, sitting at higher altitude further back while I picked off targets until I could get close enough to finish off the relatively-unarmed survivors. It worked like a charm. My question is this: Am I employing the Ka-50 with proper tactics? Am I doing what I "should" be doing here? How well am I doing at this? And to clarify, yes I got a bit cocky towards the end and just screwed around with it. My primary goal was to eliminate threats before attacking the rest. The rocket run wasn't perfect, but it worked fairly well. Oh, and I'm also thinking about joining a squad soon. Any feedback is appreciated =) Patrol.trk
  4. Gotta wonder how TIR would react to everyone wearing their own headset behind you.
  5. Is there any way to see trees in cities in the editor without actually launching the mission? I find myself plopping units down into groves because they're not represented in the editor. Isn't there some way to access a 3D view without actually flying the mission? If there isn't, then is there a possibility of that being added in a patch? I'm going nuts trying to set up simple missions here. Thanks guys.
  6. I'll echo that head tracking, a HOTAS setup and rudder pedals are a must for this sim to be truly enjoyable. If memory serves, the Comanche was actually supposed to have a twisting cyclic instead of pedals. I wonder if it'll ever see implementation anywhere else. 7. Anti-Arty Perhaps it's just my computer, but even with fog density 0, units aren't rendered until I'm within 4km, which is WAY too close for my comfort. Not sure how to handle this mission since I can't even see the enemy until I'm within spitting distance and they're shooting at me. Specnaz rescue Okay, this was a total and complete gem! This is probably my favorite mission to date. Do you actually have to land on the roof? I presume so. At any rate, I did okay on my first try except for denting up my nose gear pretty badly. Landing at night is challenging, after all. When I got back to base, I landed but didn't receive any sort of "mission complete" message. I quit the mission, proceeded to the next, and was promptly shot down. When I came back to the campaign, it dropped me off at the specnaz rescue again. Not sure why... Supplies cut off It'd be nice to be told in the briefing that the target is above the fog. At any rate, I found them but was disappointed by my target points. They pointed in the general direction, but none of them were that close to the enemy units. I was shot down by AAA that I couldn't locate the first time. The next time, I took out all 4 defenses and was happily mopping up the camp with my 30mm when my wingman (who was on overwatch) suddenly reported an air defense and a SAM launch. I punch flares and glance out my left window to see an impending bad day. A split second later, I'm drifting through the air, enjoying the breeze as the few pieces that are left of my copter fall to their doom. My wingman follows shortly. It seems a tad unfair to suddenly spawn in a SAM so close to the camp after I spent so much time cleaning up air defenses. I know that you could theoretically have an SA-8 sitting there in the fog with the radar shut down, but it still seems a tad unfair, especially considering that you're sent in a chopper with no RWR. I know that the realistic scenario debate has been done to death, but I'm of the opinion that if you're going to send KA-50s in against enemies with radar-guided munitions, we should at least have some kind of support. SOMEBODY should be flying SEAD, otherwise we're just sitting ducks ripe for target practice. Still, I'm enjoying the campaign and eagerly await 1.1! Oh, and I can't emphasize enough how TOTALLY COOL I thought the Specnaz rescue mission was =D Edit: Command Post Attack I'm not sure what's going on here. When I get close to the village, trying to target the TP I entered into the PVI simply points the shkval straight down. I can't find the correct house to attack. I've flown twice now and hit the wrong building. Any idea what's going on with my targeting system? Is this a programmed failure? Or am I doing something completely wrong? Edit 2: It appears my TP question has been discussed but not completely answered. I'll try to figure out a workaround.
  8. Okay, I just finished Mission 10. That was awesome! Using the heavier anti-ship ordinance was a blast! I accidentally dropped the first missile in the drink (launched too low, I think) but the second one hit its mark perfectly. I admit that I cheated to find the enemy ship's location. When I hit the ship, I was told to abort because F-16s were inbound. I thought I failed, but when I got away and quit the mission, I progressed to the next one in the campaign. I never was told that the ship was successfully sunk (though I watched it on camera.) Possible bug?
  9. All right, I finally skipped Mission 8. I tried it close to a dozen times and just could not suppress the nigh-invincible enemy forces. I tried Mission 9 once and then skipped that one as well. A combination of aggravation with the ground crew (had to take off and land on the runway before they'd give me NVGs,) the ever-annoying "fly in formation with someone for 15min and then promptly lose once you reach the target area" factor, and the difficulty of trying to fight anyone or anything at night in the Ka-50 made this mission nothing but a pain. It's a cool concept, but it's hard enough to fly escort for an Mi-8; doing it at night just makes it plain aggravating. I'll try Mission 10 when I get back from work tonight. Again, this is really a great campaign, but some of these missions are just plain unbalanced and angering. I look forward to the next version of the campaign with some of these problems fixed =)
  10. I'm on the fifth mission now and loving it! Not to rag on the fourth mission anymore, but what triggers the friendly fighters? On my first couple of tries, I was shot down trying to flee the Hinds. Then on the third try, I get a decent lead, we suddenly have fighter support (~3min into the mission,) the Hinds are shot down, and life is good! Did the friendly support fail to be triggered the first couple of times? Edit: If you want, I'll have some time this next week to clean up the English in the mission descriptions. Would you like me to? Edit 2: Voice glitch report: When Sibir 1 is supposed to say, "We're expecting a lot of enemy activity," only the text appears. Edit 3: Upon further inspection of the thread, I realize that I didn't download the fix for mission 4. Oops. Ignore above comments. Edit 4: Further comment: Mission 6 is pissing me off to no end. I can take out the first ambush, although not without the convoy suffering fairly heavy losses. Out of 4 attempts, though, they've only radioed for the other convoy once. When I get to the second ambush, I run out of Vikhrs because my stupid AI wingman is too much of a blithering idiot to take anything out before dying. Arg!
  11. I know it's been said a thousand times before, but DAMN! I started the oil campaign part 2 tonight, flew towards the target area, then popped up for a second to take a look. My wingman called SAM launch. I popped flares and tried to evade. BOOM! Dead before I could even locate the first enemy. I know it's unrealistic to have a targeting radar or FLIR, but holy hell are these SAMs getting old. I just don't have the perfect 30km vision that my AI buddy does. I can't spot camouflaged AAA sitting in the middle of a city 10km out. They're CAMOUFLAGED, for crying out loud! Anyway, I guess I'm not so much looking for help as I am wondering if anyone can successfully tackle these missions. How do you deal with threats you just can't see? Or do people just design missions that are a little more laid-out for a bird that's based on visual targeting and data links from other aircraft that aren't implemented?
  12. I went from a PDC E2160 to a C2Q Q9400 and the difference was phenomenal. Granted, I have a decent GPU (Radeon HD4870,) but if you have a GPU to back it up, the CPU can make a gigantic difference. I went from consistent <20FPS to constant >30FPS and it's wonderful =) Also if you haven't gotten it yet, TrackIR/freetrack is an absolute MUST. It turns an exercise in frustration into a realistic-if-nauseating rollercoaster =D
  13. Nope, no mods. Just a clean install patched up to latest version. Anyway, any comments on the flying and shooting?
  14. Alrighty, I've been flying this bird for a couple of months now. I think it's time to get some feedback, especially on tactics. I've heard all manner of advice, but the general gist seems to be "hold back, stay slow and low, take pot shots." In general, it's keeping me alive more often than not. Here's a track of the first mission of oil war 1. Note: this is the first time I've saved a track and it has the peculiarity of ending early. Towards the end when I turned to go back home, the track seems to just stop recording control inputs and the chopper dives into the ground. When I flew the mission, I recovered the bird (albeit without a tail) and got her safely back to base. I'm not sure why I died in the recorded track but lived in the game. Comments? Anyway, here's the track. Please please please give me advice on my flying, shooting, and general combat strategy. Thanks guys! http://junk.seikdel.net/mission1.trk
