  1. I would verify and then double-check and verify again that freesync is not on.

Also worth noting I can crank my settings up and performance stays the same. Going to ultra clouds and high water doesn’t effect my FPS more than 1-5. Msaa also doesn’t hurt it and neither does the view range.

I say that because this statement makes me think it might be.  I've got a 3080 and with GSYNC enabled my FPS basically stays the same but with it disabled my FPS dips more than 5 when Clouds are set to Ultra.

Also, are you using the exact same monitor cable?

Are you using an HDMI or DPI cable?

Also of note my gpu hardly ever goes up above 40% utilization and most normally is at 20-30%. Marianas islands has my gpu up at near 70-80% and at about 64 FPS (average for me) in the tomcat.

What is your CPU utilization during these?

  2. Look for this file - autoexec.cfg

In your user saved game folder

    C:\Users\_YOUR_NAME_HERE_\Saved Games\DCS\Config

Add the statsColor line and use the RGB of your choice.

    options.graphics.statsColor = {0,0,0}

    Found this to help.

FYI: you can also create the file autoexec.cfg in C:\Users\$USER\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Config with the following content:

    options.graphics.statsColor = {250,250,250}

With this you don't loose your configuration, if you update DCS.

Further Information can be found in C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\Config/graphics_readme

Thanks. I was about to start a topic with just that question ,"should I upgrade my gtx1080".

Looks like there is a significant gain. Now I need to decide whether to stretch for 3090 or if 3080 will be sufficient.  Expense is a factor, but mostly it's the availability that will need to be overcome.

What is your take guys on 3080 vs 3090 ?

10700 is my CPU if that matters,  running 3 screens

I have a 3080 and it's a beast but it only has 10GB RAM. ( Depending on how my settings are, I consistently use over 7.5GB and sometimes max out my 10GB of my VRAM)
If money was not a concern I'd go with the 3090 because it has 24GB RAM.

Does that really matter?  Not sure, but If I had an extra $2500, I'd buy a 3090.  🙂 LOL

Ok, I unleashed the power of my GPU and CPU 😅 and reduced the resolution to 1440p and was able to match those results (with 4x MSAA 🙂)

    25-07-2021, 13:22:37 DCS.exe benchmark completed, 13132 frames rendered in 148.234 s
                         Average framerate  :   88.5 FPS
                         Minimum framerate  :   73.1 FPS
                         Maximum framerate  :  103.9 FPS
                         1% low framerate   :   74.2 FPS
                         0.1% low framerate :   72.9 FPS

I think next to the resolution, the forest factor of 0.8 contributed to that.

Edit: correction - missed that you had SSLR and SSAO "on". My results above are with them "off".

Here are my results with your exact settings:

    25-07-2021, 13:40:18 DCS.exe benchmark completed, 12408 frames rendered in 147.922 s
                         Average framerate  :   83.8 FPS
                         Minimum framerate  :   70.1 FPS
                         Maximum framerate  :   97.5 FPS
                         1% low framerate   :   70.7 FPS
                         0.1% low framerate :   69.9 FPS

Yeah, I've tried (MSAA 2x ), (MSAA 2x + SSAA x1.5), (MSAA off + SSAA x2) and to my eyes it just LOOKS better with MSAA 4x.

I've always ran with SSLR ON and just recently enabled SSAO after I saw a video of how it helps with clouds.  I'll have to test this more because I don't see a big difference in how the clouds look between HIGH and ULTRA.  Again, it could be my eyes. LOL

When you changed your resolution to 1440 does it make everything look too compact compared to the resolution you had?

  5. Thanks Hiob!

Here's my first run at this one.

Roger that, thanks for all your help! Definitely going to be keeping an eye out for the 3080.

You are in a similar situation I was in last year.

When I downloaded DCS last May I had the following rig: AMD 2600K (3.4GHz), Nvidia 1060 3GB, 16 GB Ram and an SSD.

Although it ran DCS fine and the graphics were OK, I was constantly trying to improve the graphics and performance.

First thing I did was expand the ram to 32GB, overclocked the CPU and the video card.   With those 3 changes my graphics performance only moved from Low-Low-Mid range to Low-Mid-Mid range.  No matter what I changed the QUALITY of the graphics didn't improve enough for me to enjoy. I still wanted MORE!

I knew that the only way to truly improve on my graphics was to upgrade my Video Card.  Going from a 1060 to a 1080 just didn't make sense to me, so I started looking at the 3080.  Putting a 3080 in an old computer like mine didn't really make sense so I jumped and purchased a new computer. (decision to purchase pre-built verses build my own, is another story)

Now I've got an AMD 5800X with a NVIDIA 3080 and 64GB of RAM.

On default settings my new rig performs three and a half times better than my overclocked\upgraded\overworked\old computer.
I don't worry about graphics settings now.  Sure I still try to tweak the settings but I really don't need to.

    Long story short.

To truly upgrade the graphics of DCS you will need a better graphics card.

Does that upgrade work in you current system or does it make more sense to upgrade the MB and CPU along with it?

That's a decision between you and your bank account.

I upgraded everything and I'm glad I did. If I didn't, I'd be spending most of my time tinkering with my old system and not flying!

Is it even realistic to have a change in HUD color?

Realistically I would never be allowed to operate a military aircraft because I'm color-blind.

As for this product, it would be nice to have an option to change the color for those of us who are color-blind.

  9. I've tested MIN, MAX and various other configurations in the NVIDIA control panel and DCS settings and always have the stutter.

So I don't think its related to video settings.

And I'm using the Ultimate Performance power plan and still getting the stutter - I tested Normal and Ultimate.

    USB Mouse?  Wireless or Wired?

I just flew the F-18 on the Syria map but never enabled my mouse and had NO stutter.

I'm using a wireless mouse via a Unifying USB receiver.

It could be that I'm so used to seeing the stutter that I don't see it anymore.  LOL

I'll try it later tonight with a wired mouse just to see if I was seeing things.

But wanted to post here just in case someone had already tested this.

    Hi gents,

does anyone of you know, what the figures in "Preload Radius" stand for? Thanks.

    Cheers

@THERION I'm glad you asked that, because it made me take a closer look at it.

This is what the 2020 manual says about it.

    image.png

The Preload Radius MAX value is 150000, so using my trusty convert app, I found that it equals 150 kilometers.  (150000 meters = 150 kilometers)

    Hmmm?

Now that raises some questions about this part of the manual.

    image.png

The key words are 'Radius' and 'around'; so the area in front, behind and on each side of your aircraft.  ( please correct me, if I'm wrong )

In my test, I can't see a difference between Ultra and Extreme. There is a BIG difference from Ultra to High, but I can't see a difference between Ultra and Extreme.

Ultra has a radius of 24 kilometers. So, if I want to match the Preload radius to my Visible Range then I would set Preload to 24000. (24 kilometers = 24000 meters)

So, to keep everything aligned I'm thinking this would be the Preload Radius setting for each Visible Range setting.

    Low   = 7km = 7000 meters Preload Radius

    Med  = 12 km = 12000 meters Preload Radius

    High = 17km = 17000 meters Preload Radius

    Ultra = 24km = 24000 meters Preload Radius

Extreme = the whole map? = everything on the map?

I always had my preload radius set at MAX value.  I'll have to run some test to see if I notice a difference if I lower it to match the Visible Range radius.

That makes alot of sense Lange_666, and I am actually targeting doing just that, get it pretty solid just above 60, then lock it at 60. So with that being said, where again are you locking it at 60? NCP right? And another open question, once I Lock it at 60, should I run my monitor still at 120, or set it to 60 as well? I would thing there would be a difference on workload for the GPU correct?

    I have these same questions.

  11. I understand!

In order for me to enjoy DCS the way I wanted to I had to replace my 10yr old custom built system.  I thought I would wait for things to settle down(price\availability) and build my new system with 2020\2021 parts.  But from reading the news and also paying attention to what was not being said, I figured that this situation is going to last longer than I wanted to wait.

So I started looking at companies that build gaming computers.  I found many that had the CPU\GPU combo I wanted but would cost considerably more than if I built it myself.

But they had the parts and I did not.

So I had to make a decision:  spend more money now and get what I want or wait (for who knows how long) to save 500-1500 dollars.

Now, just so you know, age had a say in this decision!  Statistically, I only have about 25 years left to live.

Knowing that, I asked myself this question - am I okay with wasting 6 months or a year of my last 25yrs just to save a 1000 dollars?

Time vs. Money.     hmmmmm, I can always make money, I can't make time.

So I bought a gaming computer from a US company.  It took 3 weeks but that's a lot better than 6months or a year! hehe.

And I got the AMD 5800x \ RTX 3080 combo I wanted to begin with.

I'll admit, if I was 20 years younger, I would wait another year, but time is not on my side! 🙂 hehe

  12. @Fakum Stop chasing the FPS* holy grail 🙂

*(I'm including the stuttering with FPS)

I read many post about FPS\Perfomance\VideoQuality\GraphicsCardEnhancments\WindowsYESNOsettings\etc., on this site as well as ALL of the accompanying youTube videos that come with those post.  I made so many changes, based on the last 'best' thread or video, that my FPS and video quality was degrading and I couldn't remember what the game looked like before those changes.

So I started testing my own system to see if I could notice what each setting did or did not do.  I have probably spent over 30 hours benchmarking my system and I'm only half way through the total combination of settings between NCP and DCS. But I have evidence of how each setting affects my FPS( I have screenshots and videos of each test).

I'm only saying this to warn you that chasing the FPS* holy grail will only lead to......well you get the point. 🙂

I have a 3080 and get great FPS and awesome video quality but I also have the stuttering you described.  As of right now, I'm okay with it because I don't spend too much time just looking sideways.

My advice is, listen to everybody and test every theory - in triplicate!  And take notes!

    p.s. on FPS counters:

Do you have GeForce Experience installed? It has an FPS counter that can be turned on.  I tested it against DCS and MSI afterburner and they all displayed the same FPS. I did this because it was hard for me to see the FPS text in DCS.  (by the way - the beta version of GeForce Experience can show more than FPS if wanted)

  13. Last night I tested this but I pressed ALT+ENTER right after I logged in and didn't see a jump in FPS when I started a mission.

This morning I started a mission and then pressed ALT+ENTER and did see a jump in FPS.  I then tried it in several other missions and maps but did not see the jump in FPS.

@HiobFrom your experience, does it need to be initialized from an active mission to work?

    AND

Once it has been initiated, does it work for the duration of my log-in no matter which aircraft\mission\map I'm in?

    Thanks

  14. A note about SSAA.
It wasn't until I read the manual did I understand what it was and how it should be used.

But the most important information I read was that it should not be used with MSAA.

It also says that SSAA is for the top-of-the-range graphics cards and very powerful systems.

    image.png

After I read that I ran some test on my system and the only changes were MSAA and SSAA.

My average FPS with MSAA 4x was 67.

My average FPS with SSAA x2 was 46.

I didn't test it with both on. hehe

@Fakum I would try just changing this with your current settings and see if it makes any difference.
