  1. This would actually be pretty amazing if they could pull this off.
  2. Hey all, I wanted to open a thread to start a discussion about the many different detection systems used to detect aircraft. I am interested in learning more about how these systems work and the advantages and disadvantages of each. I am especially interested in learning more about FLIR, IRST, and Electro-Optical systems. Maybe I am not looking hard enough, but I do not understand the differences associated with these systems. I guess I can start by expressing my knowledge on the subject and what I know about these various different systems. If I have something incorrect or mixed up, please politely correct me. First, there are mainly two different types of Detection Systems. There are Passive systems that do not produce any emissions and active systems in which do produce emissions. Because of this, with passive systems you will not be able to pick up on any incoming emissions from the detection system itself where as active systems it is possible to pick up on the detection system's emissions. Ex. of Passive Systems include: - Infrared Search & Track (IRST) - Electro-Optical - Foreward Looking Infrared (FLIR) - Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) Ex. of Active Systems include: - Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) (I heard the F-35 has passive Radar, how might that work?) The most common and effective way to detect and track an aircraft is by Radar. Radar - Radio waves are sent out and reflected back to the radar when encountering an object allowing the Radar to calculate the objects location, aspect, speed and altitude - As soon as a radar is turned on, a target equipped with an RWR can pickup on incoming radar emissions IRST - Picks up on an aircraft's heat signature (How? not entirely sure) Electro Optical -detects objects by powerful optics and a computer system differentiating the pixels ( I think) FLIR (Do not know how this differs from IRST) RWR -Picks up on incoming radio waves from RADARs
  3. How did you end up bypassing the Gear VR home screen? I'm having this same problem. Every time I plug it up, it goes directly to the home screen. EDIT: Okay, I managed to get it to work. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. In order to get pass the Samsung VR software you simply can't let the connector on the headset connect to the phone's micro usb. I avoided this proble by pushing the usb connecter on the headset to the large size "position A" so that the usb pins won't actually connect to the phone. As a first Impression here are my Pros and Cons after about 10mins of play. Pros: -Has a lot of potential for a cheaper replacement to the oculus rift - Has really nice graphics in the Ultra setting, however, even then some gauges are a bit blurry to me Cons: -Because I had to ensure the phone didn't connect to the micro usb on the gear VR, it wasn't secure in the headset and moved around a bit -Possibly because phone wasn't secure, the head position in game wasn't calibrated correctly (if I looked forward, it wouldn't be looking directly forward in game) -Motion Sickness ( I do not own track ir and I am not used to using my head to look around in game, also because of the lag and poor quality picture.) - As mentioned earlier in the thread, there is no 3d depth -Graphics aren't crisp (Some of the guages and are blurry to me) - Phone can get hot over a long period of use Conclusion: While I may have listed a lot more cons than pros, I strongly do believe that apps like this in the future will make virtual reality cheap and feasible for everyone to enjoy. I believe the motion sickness would be far less if I was streaming from a usb and the head position was calibrated better. This may be fixed after some more tweaking. If this app was made specifically for the Samsung VR and was avialable in the Oculus store, it could work a lot more fluidly. For one, I would not have to bypass the Gear VR menu. Two, I would be able to stream using usb. Three, I am sure you would be able to get a crisp 3d depth working And Four, I would be able to use the headset buttons to control the mouse in game. Ideal for clicking buttons in the cockpit. In conclusion, I feel that as the technology progresses and more apps become available, this may be an ideal solution for VR gaming. These are just my first thoughts on this, and I too will do tweaking as there may be fixes to all of the cons I have listed above.
  4. Dovetail Games new Flight Simulator https://fsxinsider.com/dovetail-games-flight-simulator-announced-at-gamescom-2015/ http://www.dovetailgames.com/news/2015/aug/4/dovetail-games-looks-to-the-future-collaborating-with-microsoft I know this may be old news to some of you all. It is about time we see a good new flight simulator arrive on the market though. I hope to see improved physics, collision detection, and of course graphics. Also I hope they don't overlook the need for a good net code to fly close formation.
  5. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=89164 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=116901 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=95985 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=111278 I would start with RedBeard's guide (the 2nd link). I think that may be a fairly strong starting point. After that I would just read through some of the other threads and nitpick the information. Good Luck man. I'm trying to learn as well, the only difference is I have very little coding experience. This should change in the near future. Nice site you have by the way.
  6. You really think I need a better PSU or different GPU? I haven't looked too much into it, but I don't see a card that can perform better within the same price range.
  7. I wasn't nearly as focused on DCS World 2 as it may seem. I was curious to know specifically how you think the graphics card and process would hold up for DCS as it currently stands. However, if anyone had any idea or guesstimate on how it would run on DCS World 2 than I wouldn't mind hearing that opinion too. But my focus was on how well do you think a build like this can perform in DCS world as it is now. Interested in hearing rough ideas and possibly advice specifically on the graphics card and processor from people who may have had similar hardware.
  8. Just playing around with PC builds. Curious to know your thoughts on how well something like this would run DCS. What's your expected FPS on your expected settings? I know it's not out yet but how well do you think it will do when DCS World 2 is out? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/C8mhXL
  9. Thank you so much. The scale was the issue. Although, I'm not sure why that would be an issue. I made my model to scale in meters. The texture wasn't a problem, I only used it for it's convenience. Thanks again.
  10. After playing around with the model and model viewer, I managed to get some more of the model to show up. However, I have no clue how and why this happened and I am still missing the front portion of my model.
  11. Hey everybody, I am having trouble seeing my whole model in model viewer. I am simply just testing out to see if I can get an object into DCS world as a beginner step into modding. When I use model viewer I can't seem to see my whole model. I have applied a single material across my whole model, and placed the route bitmap file into the model viewer's temp textures folder, but get this issue when trying to load into model viewer. I attached some screenshots to show you all what I mean. I am sure there is a really simple step I am overlooking, but I've been trying to solve this issue for a couple days now. Any ideas? Thanks.
  12. Thank you for sharing. Amazing read.
  13. Thank you. With that being said, I have strong faith that it can be done and within 10-15 years, someone will have it done and it may not be ED. I know ED is a small company and they are busy and wrapped up in getting their sim together, but I strongly believe that ED should start making moves to somehow develop or get someone else to develop a new game, sound, and World Engine that will use future computing technologies. Then again, I don't know all the technological and financial barriers ED would need to surpass to pull something like this off. But like I said, if ED doesn't do it, someone will. Now with all that said, it would be wonderful to fly around above the World's most beautiful cities and locations. Along with this, it'll be interesting to see the infinite amount of hypothetical and historical missions that can come along with something like this. A World terrain Engine would probably also take FSX and X-plane out the market making DCS the primary go-to flight simulator. Kind of an off topic subject, but why would it be a technical challenge to integrate DCS World into Outerra?
  14. What I want to know is... We always here about the ED development team being located in Moscow, but is there a team somewhere in the US or any other locations? Isn't Wags in the US? Just curious.
  15. Really amazing footage of the F-22 raptor demo at SF Fleet Week. And bonus in cockpit footage of the F-16 during the heritage flight demo with the F-22 and P-51. Amazing video. Growing up, I went to the fleet week airshow every year. It sucks that the year they brought F-22 out I had to take the SAT, so I missed this show:(. But an amazing video. EDIT: Can't seem to embed the video. Am I doing something wrong? EDIT 2: Thanks Namenlos Ein
  16. I understand and I figured I'd get comments like that. I have a laptop with an Intel I7 Q630QM, 16GB DDR3 Ram, and a 2gb NVIDIA Gt 635m. With this I'm able to play DCS. It might not be the best graphics or frame rate but it gets the job done at a decent level. Also the build that you posted PureEvil will out perform the Alienware, but it still lacks the OS and case. Plus it uses an i5 rather than an i7. The Alienware is compact (smaller than the consoles) and comes with an xbox 360 controller and receiver in which adds to the value. And correct me if I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure it uses desktop processors too. I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy because to be honest I wish the thing was a little bit cheaper, but I am curious on your guys thoughts and ideas.
  17. I'm curious to know what you PC experts think of the new Alienware Alpha. http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-alpha/pd?ref=PD_OC I for one would be interested in a market that uses small boxed pcs as a gaming console. But for me, the primary issue for pc gaming is optimizing your hardware and controller. I found that many games, DCS included takes way to much time to get set up to the point where everything runs the way it should. I also fear the lack of controller support for some games, such as battlefield 4. They were really lazy with their controller support for the pc. I plug in my 360 controller to play and the game icons to pick up weapons and get in vehicles, ect. show up as if I was playing with a mouse and keyboard. Along with that, navigating through origin and through the pause menu requires a keyboard and mouse, customizing your controller set up is a pain, and it is dang near impossible to get a kill in multiplayer because the game doesn't have any assist for the controller online. This isn't just for BF4 but a couple of other games I've tried, just don't feel right on the pc. My question for you experts: How do you guys think this type of hardware will run on DCS? I heard that the graphics chip has similar performance to an Nvidia gtx 860m. I don't think the i3 will hold up well, but what about the i5 or i7 version? How quickly do you think the hardware will age? What do you guys think of the pricing? Starting at $150 more than the console I'm a little disappointed it comes with an i3 processor, 4gb ddr3, and a 500gb hard drive. However, the more pricey version at $900 seems like a fairly good deal for an i7, 8gb ddr3, and 2TB HDD build.
  18. I like to fly with the x-52 throttle and the logitech 3d pro stick. I have the x-52 (not pro version) and the springs are pretty warn out. The tension in the logitech stick feels much better imo than the x-52. The only thing I like on the X-52 that I don't like on the logitech is that the x-52 has 2 POV HAT switches on the stick. It sucks to only have one on the logitech because I would like to use one to look around and the other to trim like how I would do on my X-52. Also, Don't mean to hijack your thread but.. Does anyone know how to program the logitech stick to have differen't modes? Like I want to be able to press a button and have it change the button configuration of the stick. (Like how the X-52 has the mode switch that allows you to program buttons differently within the different modes)
  19. Hi. In the past I've messed around with track NoIr to see if I could get a good head tracking setup going, but I eventually gave up and stop working with it due to limited time to fly. Now that I have a little more time to fly, I've been trying re set everything up for DCS. So I ended up recently deleting the axis commands for Track Ir in DCS controller setup menu, because it was conflicting with my HAT switch on my joystick that I had configured to look around. Now, I'm trying to start configuring track NoIr again, but since there are no axis commands set up in DCS it won't work. Is there a file, or a way I can get these back? For any clarification just ask. Thanks.
  20. *Removed and reposted from F-35 thread This is not meant to troll or to start a massive debate, but I just came across this video on youtube that I wanted to share because I thought it was funny. This is not intended to start a "what plane is better debate", just to enjoy a good laugh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWJeqrvoF6M#t=37
  21. Because I thought it was funny and wanted to share. I could care less about the "what plane is actually better debate". Some people would try to turn it into this but it's just something I wanted to share for a good laugh and move on.

    Omaha!!!

49ers are the best team in the NFL. Sorry, I had to lol. Die hard 9er fan. Seahawks aren't all that great. The real super bowl was two weeks ago. Don't mind me though, I just love my team.
  23. I know it's years off and ED is developing their EDGE engine but I sure hope that we will be able to see DCS is in a world generated terrain engine such as outerra, in a few years. It would be nice to be able to fly any where in the world with a DCS style net code and physics engine. this is what keeps most people flying fsx. Does anyone know how far off Outerra is from being completed? And how they would go about adding cities and buildings to make a replica of Earth?
