  1. I guess it has greater impact when you're flying the fixed wing as well because you're spotting from higher altitudes and greater distances. That's why I mentioned I've not tried combat missions yet. I can imagine it's tricky, I could never see anything before it was shooting at me with my HD monitor. 2. I'll just put my 2p in. :) ... I got my new Oculus last week. I'll start with some background so you know where I am coming from. I searched many forums to try to convince me that I needed a Rift. Time after time I kept reading "Its not quite there, wait for the next generation". Then I came across a thread which contain posts from Simmers, and the replies were totally different, "Would never go back" "Best thing ever" etc... So forums didn't really help me much. My main concerns were the screen door effect, and the resolution... would I be able to read the instruments etc. Luckily my local John Lewis store does demo's. Now although Obviously they didn't have DCS, I could see that when using the headset the resolution and screen door are not that bad. You're so busy think 'OMG WOW' that you don't really notice it.... I had the bug and ordered one. So I have been flying the Huey and Mi8 in DCS using the Oculus and in my opinion it is amazing. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. The cockpit just feels so real, having the centre console actually protruding out towards you, the bevels on the dials, everything just stands out and immerses you totally. I spent the first couple of days just flying hard low level around towns and villages. I was finding myself looking for interesting building models and flying around them, just soaking up how good it looks. You notice things that I never noticed before, details around the airfield etc. Something I've not seen mentioned, because your brain thinks its all real, if you do a high G manoeuvre, you can feel it in your stomach. I didn't suffer from sickness at all, but this sensation makes it feel so much more real... Another example of this is when I was trying to land on a building, my peripheral vision picked up that I was losing altitude, so I could react to it without having to look at my dials for clues. As such I find flying so much more intuitive and easier - as well as being able to judge distance. So, as for the resolution and screen door effect. Well, I wouldn't say it is terrible, but it is definitely noticeable. In the above image, sitting in the right side, I can see clearly enough to read the writing from the gauges on the right side of the front panel. With the exception of the smaller gauges (Gas and torque) If I moved my head forward I could read them. the smaller gauges, not so easy.. you can see well enough to know where the needle is pointing, but you would need to know what the gauge was for and where the needle should be. Centre console I found most of it was not very clear, again you would have to move your head closer to read the text around the switches although the radio frequencies are clear enough. Spotting targets? to be honest I've not tested it yet, still enjoying just flying around for now. I thought of a good analogy for the Rift. Imagine you had two displays, one 720p and one 1080p. The 1080p is the best right? Now imagine that the 1080p is a black and white only display... is it worth trading in a few pixels for the better experience with the colour 720p? I make no apologies for such a long post, I hope it helps someone make their decision. And theres so much more to the Rift than that as well - I spent 2 hours flying around in GoogleEarth last night :)
  3. @Fishbot - yes there is, there are a couple of hot keys but you need to set them first and enable them. You will see it in the menu somewhere of FTnoIR. I normally user ctrl+shift+num1 or num2
  4. @Fishbot - try unticking the tick box 'EWMA' I think its called - not really sure as recalling from memory. I had an issue where when that was ticked, it locked to a single position.
  5. If you are referring to the controls option in the menu, you will not see it appear in there with V4Friend's DLL. I believe that is mentioned in the readme file included with the dll. The best way to tell if its working is by looking for the log file in the root of your local disk that is made by the dll.... If it exists, then it has at least loaded the dll file.
  6. @Kiwikidd Try out FaceTracknoIR. If you already have a webcam it will cost you absolutely nothing. It will give you good start on head tracking and depending on your setup can work really well. No need to buy or make a clip or modify the camera either. Make sure you look through the instructions on setup first and make sure that your face is evenly lit for best results. It's a bit more resource hungry than the other solutions but if you are like me, DCS does not use all of my cpu cores or ram anyway so does not make much difference. For my set up I use FaceTracknoIR on a PS3eye as it seems to give very good results in poor light and a very fast frame rate. I also have a Saitek x45 which has served me well. I used to use the rotary for zooming when I had a FreeTrack setup but now use 6DOF on FTnoIR so no longer need it. The developer of FaceTracknoIR has now released an Alpha version of a dll that will now allow you play in 64bit with it. I highly recommend you go for head tracking, it will transform your game play, whichever system you choose. I'm sure TrackIR works better that the other offerings (I have never tried TrackIR) but try a free one first so you can see if its worth spending the cash on.
  7. Just wanted to say I have the same problem as has been suffered by others with my multi-monitor setup. I have my main screen on the right and my smaller secondary monitor on the left. I wanted to have the MFCD's displayed on the left monitor, centre viewport on the right. I could not get the MFCD's to display using the correct settings as you would expect to be entering them. If I swap the displays round in windows, I can get it to work great. I downloaded "Easy Monitor Configurator". I placed the MFCD's and then checked the LUA file. It had placed negative numbers in the LUA file. This kind of proves that Windows is referencing the monitors as negatives. I am using an ATI 4850, I've also tried with an additional GPU as well as using both sockets from the ATI, both yield the same results. Unfortunately I think that swapping the monitors is the only way round it.
  8. As I understand it, in full screen mode, only one application can have hold of graphics card at any given time. If you want to switch between applications in Full Screen, the running application has to give up its access to the graphics card and pass it over. This is not always handled very well which is why you often see crashing after ALT+TABing out of a game then trying to get back in. The overhead from using windowed mode is due to it having to render all of the stuff underneath, in Full Screen it doesn't bother as you can not see it anyway.
  9. I would hang on for a bit before putting in too much work, I think a solution may be coming soon. There is a solution in the pipeline for FTnoIR that may work for FreeTrack also.
  10. I noticed you only just joined the forum. Rest assured that Eagle Dynamics have the best customer support I have EVER seen on ANY game. They will soon sort you out.
  11. I would not worry too much. I'm not at liberty to say too much but the developer of FaceTracknoIR has been working on this and it looks very promising indeed, possibly for FreeTrack users as well. Wim (the developer of FTnoIR) is on a break at the moment - which is why its gone quiet for a bit - but I am sure he will tell you more when he returns.
  12. LOL, you think you'll be allowed to use your PC when that ring goes on? While you're standing at the alter, your wife-to-be will have someone taking it away!! :megalol: Congrats and good luck!
  13. Anyone having trouble setting up MFCD's etc may want to have a look at this: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=72755&highlight=easy+monitor+configurator Its a tool for selecting and placing them. I have only just seen it on the forums and have not tried it but looks useful.
  14. Could someone post a screenshot so we can see what it look like :idiot::laugh:
  15. @fael097 Both FreeTrack and TrackIR are best used with infra-red LED's. In short, the setup is remove the infra-red filter from your webcam, then add a filter to only let infra-red light through. This can be made from the inside of a floppy disk or an old, exposed camera film/negative. Once this has been done, your webcam will only see the Infra-red light. It will not really matter how much light you have in the room then. Sometimes, if the camera has direct sight to a lightbulb you may have problems but ambient light is fine. Like you I could not get PPjoy to work with FTnoIR, and this would also be the case with FreeTrack. In a few weeks though, I believe there will be an interface that will allow FreeTrack/FTnoIR to work directly with Warthog using the FreeTrack protocol. The solution is currently being created by the developer of FTnoIR.
  16. I recently got myself a PS3Eye to use with FTnoIR and FreeTrack, because it can manager a higher FPS. First thing I noticed was that the PS3Eye works loads better in a dimly lit environment. Lighting is very important with FTnoIR and most of us have our computers in the corner of a room. A well placed lamp can cure this but with the PS3Eye I do not need this. I paid about £8 for a used PS3 eye and had it setup within 10 minutes. My intention was to leave in the IR filter and try out FTnoIR, if I had limited success, I would then remove it and try FreeTrack.... I already had a 3 IR LED Cap. I am still using pretty much the default settings in FTnoIR, I have altered the curves slightly so the movement/translation ratio increases the further I move on an axis and tweaked the amount of distance moved to the extents I wanted. I am yet to touch the smoothing and other options but even now I have a very usable setup in 6DOF. For those using or trying to use ppjoy, I believe you will be able to use the FreeTrack protocol with your headtracking interfaces, both FreeTrack and FTnoIR. This will include 64 bit as well. I know there has been a prototype interface in testing:
  17. Wow, congratulations. Hope you enjoy the new patch........... in 2 years time when you finally get to try it out :) :helpsmilie:
  18. I have never known such good support from a Software House! You always listen to your end users on ALL matters. To Eagle Dynamics and Matt in particular, thank you very much.
  19. Don't mean to hijack the thread but that program is really good. Helps me out all the time at work. When you look at someones computer and they say "I had a blue screen with an error message", you ask "What did the error say" and they just sit there looking blankly at you like you had asked what the meaning of life. You can basically see exactly what the computer was doing when it went BSOD. I would definitely recommend you save the link in case you have any problems yourselves.
  20. Yes, 200 so far, thanks to everybody who has supported the petition. Anybody else who wished to sign: http://www.petitiononline.com/Tracking/petition.html
  21. If I could offer another view on this, sorry it's a long one. I am going to add to the debate from the viewpoint of just one product. I have tried to generalise in all my posts but this time I will use FaceTrackNoIR (FTNIR for the rest of the post) as an example of how NaturalPoints stance is bad for us all, INCLUDING existing users of TrackIR. I am sure you are all aware of FTNIR. It is a freeware head tracking software that was released just last year. It tracks facial features and converts these into data which is then outputted to many different formats. Yes, to all of those who have not heard of it, you do not need a cap with IR LED's stuck on it or a Borg like attachment on your headphones. How cool is that? This is not, like some have suggested, an evolution of TrackIR. This is a completely new innovation, one that some may say, everybody would want (Nobody can really say they enjoy wearing the headset). Now, as I said, the software is freeware. The project started with two people, and now there is assistance from a further three. None of them are paid. They have started from scratch using a generic tracking API and got it to work in ArmA and FlightGear. Since then they have worked hard to improve the response and make it compatible with more games. They get no rewards for their work, there are donations but these will never cover the work involved let alone make a profit. FTNIR was developed from the ground up. He has developed a good product so now he wants it to work with more games, and why not? Trouble is that Eagle Dynamics only lets one interface into their game, you've guessed it, TrackIR. Does the developer of FTNIR want to use TrackIR's? I'm sure he does not. These interfaces are very simple and there are bunch of different ways of doing it, some better than NP's implementation. So although the developer of FTNIR does not want or need to use the TrackIR interface, he is forced to do so by this ridiculous agreement. {With regards to the clean program, I am sure that if games offered another interface, then the developer would gladly remove TrackIR from FTNIR, its only there for necessity} If NaturalPoint continue in their ways, what for FTNIR? Well, if nobody can use it, then why would the developer continue spending his time and energy in improving it. FTNIR and all the other tracking systems will disappear. And let's not forget, unlike some have suggested, he has copied NO code from TrackIR. I'm sure TrackIR is very good and has it's place but let it sell on its own merits, but frankly, I would rather do away with my headset, or at least have the choice. As for NaturalPoint, if a freeware developer can produce what is arguably a better head tracking system in just a year, does it not show have they have rested on their laurels and relied on monopolizing rather than developing great software? Controversial? Let the flaming begin :)
  22. Got it to work straight away! Makes a change for me to get something like that working first time.... I didn't have time to do much setup but I'm going to have a crack at setting up FaceTrackNoIR first. I've got my computer in quite a dark corner at the moment and found it struggled to keep a track on. The PS3 Eye works so much better in my low light situation. I'll have a fiddle with the settings over the weekend. If I can't get that to work very well (although it looks good so far) then out with the IR filter :)
