  1. @Flappie Thanks for the quick response! I deleted the Frenchpack and it worked. Appreciate it!
  2. Hello, I haven't played DCS in a few months so I updated to the latest version today. When attempting to start the game itself it successfully logs me in automatically, and then the application just closes. There is no error message or anything else, it just completely stops. This includes DCS disappearing from the task manager. I've tried the repair utility, and have uninstalled and reinstalled DCS using Add or Remove Programs. None of those options resolved the issue.
  3. I'm going to have to drop from this. The community that I live in just announced that they will have a planned power outage during the exact time that this event takes place.
  4. I was a Cavalry Troop Commander. When we stopped for a duration of greater than 10 minutes, we turned our engines off. Regardless of the magic of IR and whether its effects are modeled properly or not, turning your engine off is part of noise discipline. You can hear better when you don't have a diesel engine idling. Fact. Furthermore, the first contact that you will usually gain with an enemy force on the ground is from either spotting their dust trail if they are on the move, or hearing their vehicles (tracks moving, engines revving, undisciplined Soldiers talking loudly, etc). This becomes much, much more likely when you are in terrain that restricts your observation range (forests, mountains, valleys like those found to the east of Beirut, urban terrain, etc.) Having a button to turn on/off the engine of a vehicle will help detect ground and air elements beyond visual range. I can see no logical argument on why it should not be added from a tactical aspect.
  5. I noticed with the new update that the Gazelle 342L now has an option for ammo types. I'm curious if there is any consensus on the best "general-purpose" ammo type to load. I'd probably default to combat mix 4x HE and 1x AP-T for MOST engagements that you might find yourself in with the SA342L (IE COIN operations or light targets). I'll try some tests later on, since I'm curious about the performance of SAPHEI. I'm also curious as to what the "default" ammo type loadout was before this was made an option.
  6. I'll try to give this one a go. Revenant - SA342L
  7. I've found from both real life and experience in another armor simulator that turning the engine off when your vehicle is stopped is great for not just conserving fuel (duh!) but also for being able to hear contacts in the distance. I can't count the number of times when I have been on a reconnaissance mission and identified the OPFOR well before ever visually seeing them just by being able to listen for their engine noise. Would definitely be a nice feature to see added to Combined Arms in the future.
  8. Yep, ground composition has a big effect on rounds. The Rhodesians with their "K-Car" in their Fireforce doctrine faced a similar issue, with the gunner being trained to shoot at rocks, trees, etc to cause the most fragmentation and lethality. I've studied the South African Border War extensively, and I think they had a very similar approach as far as mobility. I jokingly call MG(R) Roland de Vries my "spirit animal," but he was certainly one hell of a maneuverist. The equipment is quite similar as well, such as having the Eland-90 which is a licensed version of the Panhard AML. They ended up using the same turret for the Ratel-90, which proved to be a much more effective T-55 killer than it would seem on paper. It was a conflict where they certainly used a small number of men compared to the enemy, and is interesting because it combines a hybrid threat, an active insurgency, and a conventional war all in one. For the purposes of the mission, there are a LOT of targets in place, and said targets are more suitable for engagement by the SA342L. The M would also give a much further standoff range. While in real life this is an advantage, in game it would necessitate a lot of trips back to Beirut-Rafic Hariri International to rearm, followed be having to add much heavier ADA than what makes sense in the scenario concept I have in mind. In designing any scenario for entertainment, the number one question I always have is "is it fun?" If the answer is no, then no one is going to play it. While shooting insurgents at 4.2 KM while being safely out of range is realistic, it removes the fun factor. The idea I am going for is having an air and a ground element work together to accomplish the mission, with the air element quickly destroying key targets identified by an SF Team on ground to enable the ground element to destroy everything else. I've had a blast playtesting it so far, so I can't wait to release it in the next few days.
  9. I had a Commander at one point who shot a 120mm SABOT round through an insurgent in Iraq. In this case, the coax was jammed and that was the only option left since he was about to launch an RPG at their M1A2. With that being said, it isn't recommended due to the limited number of rounds being carried, and how they can be much more effective against armored targets (or in this case, shooting them down an alleyway to allow the concussion to pull people behind cover into the center of the alley.) I won't say that using an ATGM against a single infantry Soldier isn't effective in the lethality department. If you get hit by a HOT-3, you are dead. I would argue though that you try to save such rounds for targets that meet a defined engagement criteria for heavier targets. Just like you wouldn't want to expend main gun rounds from a 120mm on single infantry targets. That's from a US perspective. I'm sure things are different in other parts of the world.
  10. For the Leclerc desert model, both variants in the camo scheme have "flair" unlike the standard Leclerc model that comes with this mod (the one with woodland camo). Is this a bug, or a feature?
  11. I hardly think that shooting enemy infantry units with a HOT-3 is "better," but to each their own.
  12. Fair enough. Besides, it is a good learning experience tweaking them myself to make them work. That being said, I don't speak French, so Google translate is one of my very good friends. Anyway, I'm working on a fairly simple mission featuring 1x Platoon of AMX-10RCRs and 2x Platoons of VBCI where you fight through some rather nasty terrain outside of Beirut to destroy some Insurgent strongpoints. Nothing challenging. I considered throwing in SA342s into the mission, but the AI keeps crashing them into the hills. Oh well! Would probably work decent for co-op, maybe with the SA342L due to the "soft" nature of most of the targets in question.
  13. @dimitriov A bit off topic, but is there any chance that you will revisit Operation Dixmude? I want to play the campaign, but I feel like every other mission is spent fighting bugs and trying to figure out what to do because triggers aren't firing.
  14. Ok. So it doesn't have the capacity to register that the SA342 has taken off from the pad? I know that when using a normal rotary-wing aircraft (taking off from the runway, etc,) it registers that you have taken off, and you can start requesting stuff like navigation assistance, announcing that you are incoming, etc.
  15. 120mm M865 Target Practice, Cone Stabilized, Discarding Sabot-Tracer (TPCSDS-T).
  16. Whenever taking off from a FARP (or any airport for that matter), I cannot seem to get the ATC to recognize that I have taken off. I have tried climbing to the altitude in question (300 in this case) and was unable to get any sort of response from ATC. The only option for the remainder of the mission is "abort takeoff," even when coming back after expending all HOT 3s. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong (more that likely the second one )?
  17. Make sure that this switch is turned to "GM." The GYRO and AMPLI will have a red and white covering until it is online. Ensure that your autopilot is also on. That is likely the three switches that you mentioned earlier. Make sure that all *four* of them are on.
  18. Hey guys, sorry if this is the wrong area, but I wanted to report a terrain-based b ug found on the Syrian map. About 17.5 KM south of Jirah there is a field that forms into a massive, jagged hill that is notably higher than any other piece of terrain near it. Coordinates are 35°56'11" North; 37°57'03" East.
