  1. How do A-10s communicate in bigger operations?

I would expect you would want to be connected to some sort of ground commander or someone who can connect you to ground units in case they spot a SAM over the next hill or something, no?

VHF AM seems to be exclusively used to chat with ATCs, VHF FM to JTACs... can they inform you of general ground news? And UHF goes to your own flight. What if you want to coordinate with other flights though? How do you call?

What if a ground commander suddenly notices a shit-ton of armour coming across a hill somewhere and wants to send A-10s there... if you're plugged in to your ATC, JTAC and flight then how could they ever tell you?

Do the ground guys contact you via UHF (since they know the frequency)?

Prior to each mission you run through each radio channel during the briefing so you as a flight knows exactly where, when and what freq you are to be at.

There is not just one actor on the battlefield - in todays standards everyone should be able to contact anyone within the network. With whom you communicate with depends on the situation. Most likely you are not speaking with your HOB when you are 500 miles away in the AO supporting TIC (its not even able since radio waves have a limited range).

Radio discipline are extremely important. A good pilot can easily become a bad pilot if he has no clue on what to say - to who he say it. Obviously there are different communication rules and actors depending on where and what the situation demands.

The VHF/UHF radios in DCS are not really that realistic in terms of what radios the actors is on. I would say the most realistic is the ATC on AM - but I suppose that is not always true either in real world operations.

The most true answer I´ve learned in aviation from my IP is: It depends! :)

  2. Yes, and I have another question.

When I want to shutdown A10, master caution start beeping. Am I supposed to turn the volume down somehow, or mute it every time I switch something off? Or am I doing something wrong? :D

You are not doing anything wrong, its just warning you of the hydraulic and system losses when the engines fail to provide power or you just simply turn of the avionics. Just reset it by pressing the Master Warning.

If it turns on in any other situation than during startup/shutdown then you have a major problem! :)

  3. 5) When I choose ramp start, my plane jumps on one parking position, when I try to drag it somewhere else, it just sticks to that one position. I can drag it, but it will return back. I can put it on different airfield, but I can't change parking positions. Maybe I have to hold some key while draggin?

You have to select the parking spot number in the dropdown checkbox (to the right of the start on ramp option).

  4. What degrees of turn can you normal get before you start to get masked? I think I read somewhere it been ten degrees or five degrees, but I won't get the chance to test it till the weekend now.

It depends on how far away the target area is, your altitude- and attitude, what direction relative of your aircraft the TGP is pointing - or any other ordinance that may be in the way. I´ve even had the "luck" to get masked by my wingman during a Buddy Lase after release.

There is no set rule for when a masking occurs - you just have to maneuver your aircraft with experience and some common sense.

  5. Some find the TAAF (TGP Attitude Advisary Function) useful, though I dont particularly use it.

It's a tool to warn you of your A/C attitude so you dont pod mask, but it's a general guidline and is not a magic bullet to prevent pod masking.

It's accessed by OSB 1 on the TGP main page, then OSB 20. You enter in your orbiting altitude into the scratchpad, and will get a red "Check Attitude" warning box when certain parameters are exceeded.

More info on it on pg 339 in the flight manual.

To my understanding it has nothing to do with being masked, as the TGP can be masked in level attitude by other ordinance, or the airframe itself. I see it as a safety barrier for when the pilot is going heads down - you really need to do something stupid to actually set the warning off! 75 degree bank is not an attitude you´d want to be in during a heads down orbit.

  6. It is legal because i do not distributing it and i am not American.

American law is only inside USA while i never been in USA and i don't want to go there so don't worry about me.

EW is one of most classyfied things and there are some interestning informations about EA-6B jammers.

But i found that about 95% or even more informations are (U).

And those that are (S) are mostly about use of this weapon on battlefield reather than technical informations and of course about deconflictation with ECM.

So looks like that JDAM itself is not classyfied so much and most interestning and most valuable informations are unclassyfied including all F/A-18 MFD pages for JDAM.

Some of them are reather well known as information about use in BDA and lack of capability to engage moving targets.

But this thread is not about law, anyway even ED is scared by law so we should not talk about law here. I saw too much panic is some threads so its better for all to do not start a panic again.

This thread is about real JDAM vs DCS JDAM.

    So another question:

What is minimum altitude of JDAM? And is the INS only phase of flight modelled in game?

If you think that i lie please learn how to use google ;-)

    Quote below is UNCLASSYFIED:

I am not good in english but for me it looks like that you must maneuver the aircraft to let the JDAM align its INS.

Its not cool knowing classified information. Its only cool to be authorized to know classified information.

On the other hand, why are you asking us questions if you got the proper documents yourself? I don´t care if you sit on secret documents, and I´m not worried about you at all. Most likely CIA or the Polish Police won´t knock on your door, but you should still know that if you comit a crime against any nation, they have the right to warrant an extradite.

The other thing is that you are asking about the DCS JDAM features - which you have been given answers on. So I still don´t see your point to include in your posts that you have classified information on your PC. It isn´t worth anything in the DCS Community anyway.

  7. In classyfied (secret) manual for F/A-18 this MFD screen is unclassyfied HAHA

Im not sure how about A-10.

Looks like all MFD screens are (U) so unclassyfied i hope its same for A-10C.

There are also some classyfied info about loft delivery at page 4-9 chapter 4 so thats why i asking for loft delivery. I cannot post the quote from this (S) because wags will ban me but u can find this secret manual without problems :-)

Its strange that some commonly know things are still (S). Look at Page 4-11 4.4.2.2 Battle Area Interdiction. Those informations are (S) but commonly known its strange.

And there are also some interestning (S) things about GPS denied drop with INS only guidance. Especially while GPS is jammed. Fun (S) fact is that EA-6B can carry JDAM and you must mind it while using GPS jamming.

Even if you know (or think you know) about classified information, its not a good idea spreading the word around.

A lot is classified about the JDAM, and some information are not. MFCD pages are one of those things that are on the border between open information - while a lot of weapon/electronic warfare pages are classified.

The best thing to avoid getting near the borderlands, is to not play with the fire. Just because you can find it on Google, does´nt mean that its legal.

  8. G'day Paul,

Thanks for these pubs, I think they're fantastic.

Regarding the Vaziani HI-ILS OR LOC/DME RWY 32, it references the ILS for RWY 14.

Is this intended as a back-course ILS? If so is there something on the plate to indicate this?

    Thanks for your work,

    - Bear

No, the 476th vFG uses an internal mod that switches the "default" runway to 32 instead of 14.

  9. Right engine fire after touch-down three times now, why? While wheel/speed braking.

Quite bumpy, very bumpy (left landing gear broke) and can't remember touch-downs... can the engines be damaged by bumpy touch-downs?

Post a track on your landings, so we can look into it properly and not only guess what the cause is.

  10. The reason is that there is a bug with some air fields. It has been like that since forever.

I don´t know about the bug...but the magnetic variation is as present in DCS as in the real world. Recent polar magnetic changes IRL have forced some airfields to change their runway numbers in some areas of the world as well.

Batumi runway is 13 (120,8 degrees true magnetic heading) adding a magnetic variation of 6,0 gives it a value of 126,8 - which rounds of to RWY 13.

EDIT: Batumi have numbers 13 in real too.

  11. People often underestimate the size of aircraft in general, and the size of hung stores in particular. What looks small slung under the wing of an aircraft at distance is rather large when you get up close - but for obvious reasons, most people rarely get to walk up to tactical jets.

Googling for some numbers results in an F-4 370 gal drop tank at over six meters. That's a sizeable canoe right there - and those aren't all that big, as far as drop tanks go.

Edit: Do you recognize a feature?

    Cheers,

    /Fred

You are most certinaly right effte, I guess pictures give you a little bit of distortion too. But I´ve never seen droptanks in that enviroment either! Glad they came to some use anyway!

  12. I've chatted up a couple Gig pilots at air shows before, and a couple had actually played DCS before, and were impressed by it. My roommates older brother drives the F18C, and he's agreed to come on a leave and try it out when it releases.

If I remember correctly the A-10C module was initially tailor made for the USAF - as a desktop tool to learn the avionics in the Charlie model when the squadrons transitioned from the A-model.
