  1. A lot depends on the module you're trying to learn. The A-10, for example, has a ton of tutorials that are almost professional in nature. The FA-18 is close second and there are more options almost daily with the F-16. For some lesser played aircraft, GR might wind up being about your only option. They have a ton of content. If you're wondering how do I shoot, there's nothing wrong with GR. If you're wanting things that are more in-depth, too the point, or "professional quality" there are better out there. I certainly wouldn't tell anyone to "avoid GR". I used to watch a bunch of their stuff when I was starting off in DCS. I just feel there's better out there. This thread has already mentioned a lot of the channels I'd recommend. I'd personally add Bogey Dope (https://www.youtube.com/c/BOGEYDOPE/featured) if you're looking at F-16 and there's still none better than Bunyap Sims (https://www.youtube.com/user/4023446/videos) for the A-10.
  2. I've really enjoyed all the videos that you've done so far. To me they're an excellent middle ground between some of the hour long, super in-depth tutorials out there and the short, bare-bones "this is how you do it". There's a place for all three in DCS training videos. There's something wholesome about being able to find a new YouTube channel in 2022 - I was subscriber 300 or something. Keep up the good work!
  3. Don't tell anyone, but I do a lot of manual reading at work. Because that I use the "Documentation" section of the website a lot. The last English version of the Viper manual on the website is right around 8 months old. In that time we've gotten additions like Ground Radar, HTS, ECM, Data Link updates, and so on. I would really like to RTFM! Is there any ETA on when we could expect an update?
  4. The newest one that I have is the one from 14 September, 2021. I hope that it gets updated soon!
  5. I was torn on whether to make a joke or be serious - so I'll do both... "I was on FIFA the other day and there's just too much football/soccer. Since I'm not actively kicking the ball myself, what's the point. And why can't I play baseball in it." When I was a kid I played a game from Dynamix called A-10 Tank Killer. I'm sure I had it on full arcade mode probably with unlimited health and ammo and I enjoyed the hell out of it. When I first came across DCS maybe five or six years ago I thought, "Oh hey, an A-10 game, those used to be fun." There must have been a trial on steam or something, because I tested it a for a few hours, couldn't figure out how to turn the plane on, and decided "This isn't for me". Less than a year ago, something clicked - I honestly can't remember why, but I bought a couple modules and became "invested". DCS scratches an itch that I didn't know I had. 10 months after my first purchase, I've built myself a sim pit, read thousands of pages of manuals, watched hundreds of hours of videos. For the vast bulk of the people in the world that would warrant a WTF. Here I'm probably one of the more moderate members of the community! The simulation part is literally the reason I'm here. As far as practicality goes - with a very few exceptions - no game accurate depicts how the thing happens in real life.
  6. In June of last year - on a whim - I picked up the F/A-18 Hornet module in the Steam Summer sale and made my entrance to DCS. The trailer for the A-10C II upgrade was so badass that I wound up buying it too. In the less than a year that I've been in the DCS community, I've read thousands of pages, watched hundreds of hours, and built myself an at-home sim pit, but I've never yet finished a campaign. Yesterday that changed. I've dabbled in probably a half-dozen campaigns and - with no offense intended - they all made me nervous. I wake up at night hearing "You missed a checklist item. You left the pitot tube on." Checklist campaigns were great training tools - and I never leave the pitot tube on any more - but Iron Flag was not only a fun campaign, it was a big confidence booster. Rather than beat you over the head with what you did wrong, it graded you - fairly in my opinion - on the ground "after the mission", rather than going Steven He's dad and yelling "FAILURE" over the headset. I kind of suck at formation flying and AAR, but rather than saying "You ruined the 4th of July for all those kids. America weeps for your shame", LOTUS still said, "Good job", we got home, and I happily accepted my 75 out of 100. The voice acting was amazing. I like BIFF more than I like most of my real life friends. The missions were educational and fun. I especially found the TAD mission to be exceptionally helpful to an intermediate pilot like myself. I was a passenger in a airplane in 1991, but the missions "felt" realistic. And the routine was oddly comforting. By the end I knew exactly when to switch from Approach to Tower to Ground, I knew exactly where "Alpha to Golf to Thunder" was. I feel like I could get around Nellis, if I could get the clearance. I'm sure it's not 100% accurate, but it felt good to me and it felt fun. I don't really have any constructive criticism to add - maybe I was lucky, maybe the bugs were squashed, but everything went off without a hitch. I can only hope that - along with Iron Flag Part 2 - Baltic Dragon will consider similar training campaigns for the Hornet, Viper, and others. He's truly a master at his craft. To summarize, I highly recommend this campaign. I feel an intermediate DCS simmer will probably get the most out of it, but it'd be a solid refresher for a veteran and a low-stakes introduction to a new guy. The voice acting is top notch - I want BIFF to be my BFF. I swear if he gets killed off in Hormuz I'm going rogue! Above all, this campaign was a great confidence builder. I plan on starting "The Enemy Within" this afternoon.
  7. Nothing like a little AAR to to keep a person humble! Granted it was my first attempt ever and I did get to hook up for a second. I'll second the "known issue" of TACAN AA and TACAN AA T/R apparently being bugged. The HSI just spins on the 10X station in either setting and no matter how close you get to the tanker. In the manual reversion part of the mission, right before you being Biff mentions making sure that you're at Angels 20. The texts says "Angels 15".
  8. I absolutely love this app. Set up was easy and it works like a charm. Right now I'm using this on my phone, and I'm actually going to upgrade to a tablet solely for this app in my 'pit. My one question - for the developer or other users - is there a size of screen that this app is optimized for? For example, on my phone (a little under 7") the F-16 ICP shows the DED if I have it in portrait mode, but not if I have it in landscape mode. I'm not sure if that is limitation of my screen size or working as intended based on the orientation of the screen.
  9. Thanks to you all! Based on the recommendations here, I used a trial to give the Anton a test run. Although I generally prefer the Bf-109 in other games, by the late war it really does seem like they just kept bolting things to the cockpit. The FW is very... clean looking. Start up is easy, although engine warm up is a long time to hold the wheel breaks... just dawned on me writing this - I should see if they can put wheel chocks on there. Since I went with the Anton, I decided to pair it with the Channel - mostly because that's what's required for Reflected's campaign. The working plan is to spend the next few months getting accustomed to the DCS version of the warbirds and look to expand in the Summer or Fall sale. Thanks again!
  10. I've been really enjoying my time in the A-10C, F/A-18, and F-16 in DCS. IL2 has been my go to for WWII flying for 20 years now, but I'd like to give it a shot in this game with the clickable cockpits and so on. I gave the Kurfurst a test drive earlier in the year, and with the big sale going on I'd like to pick up some WWII stuff to get my feet wet. So I guess there's two obvious questions - modules and maps. 1) Right now I'm exclusively single player. Between the Anton, Dora, and Kurfurst, which one has the most mission support, the most "feature complete"? Last I read neither has a bundled campaign and I'd assume they'd have similar training and a couple basic missions? Doesn't look like the Dora has a paid campaign. And the ones for Anton and Kurfurst use different maps so... 2) Normandy or the Channel. Anton uses the Channel; Kurfurst uses Normandy. It sounds like Normandy is getting a Syria-esque upgrade someday, although the Channel might in better shape right now? Sometimes it's hard to date when people were discussing the maps. Any thoughts or recommendations for some one going WWII Asset pack, one module, and one map?
  11. Sounds like you might not have the radio tuned to the right frequency? Although Biff's initial call is on the UHF radio, very early in the mission he switches to 33.000 on the FM. The voice acting goes on whether or not we're on the right frequency. The "do this popups" continue whether or not we can actually hear the instructions. I'd double check that your VHF radio is on (TR) and set to 33.000.
  12. I just wrapped up Iron Flag Part 1. It was everything I'd hoped it would be! I'd been looking forward to it since I saw Bunyap play the original demo back in 2016. I absolutely love your campaign design; even for planes that I'm not particularly fond of flying - F/A-18 - so to get back in the Hog was a blast. I'm pretty sure the Raven One prequel is up next and is getting close. I know you've got a number of campaigns in the works as well - so I just have to ask... is there a rough ETA on Iron Flag Part 2? It would be nice to carry on the training while everything is still fresh.
  13. Hey, I appreciate the suggestion - dead zones are really helpful, especially looking straight ahead, so you don't bob around too much looking down the gunsight. I've tracked down - what was for me - the issue. In case future users come across this in a search - it was the "Point extraction" settings in the Accela filter. On "automatic" it was picking up "ghost lights" on the side of my headset, probably reflections from the room lights or the sun as the case may be. I turned off automatic and set the threshhold higher - been smooth as butter ever since.
  14. Hey guys, I've recently picked up a Delanclip with Opentrack - from my Youtube browsing a fairly common setup. After a few days of tweaking, I have the curves set up pretty close to perfect. One issue that I've noticed, however - and have since day one - is that the "Game data" will move even when I hold my head perfectly still in "Raw data". It's mostly yaw - occasionally pitch. So, for example, if I look at little to the right I get a 6 in raw data. Without moving my head at all that translates to a range between 58 and 69 in game data, which is very twitchy in game - especially if you're trying to do something with a helmet mounted display. I've dug through settings, tried "smoothing", etc. I know there's some folks here that have been using this set up for a heck of a lot longer than I have - so I just wanted to see if any of this sounds familiar and if you've got any recommendations for fixing it.
  15. I'm now the proud owner of an Oculus Quest 2. There's a ton of resources - this thread included - but the tech seems to be moving so fast that a lot of what was posted is pretty out of date. I don't know if linking YouTube videos is allowed, so I'll just say that I'm using the six month old settings from Tactical Pascale as my baseline. Even that video is out of date it seems, since OTT has options - like sharpening - that weren't present there. This leaves me just fiddling switches basically as one site says one thing and a second site another; DCS is the sole reason I bought the headset - so I figured I'd come to the source. I don't expect anyone to do the setup for me, but if there are current DCS tips and settings that could be recommended to a complete VR newbie, I'd sure appreciate it. I know that "curbing your expectations" is a quote that comes up a lot, but right now it seems like having to pick the lesser of two evils. I can either get the game looking good, in which case I start to feel sick from the framerate or get the frame rate good, in which case I start to feel sick from how blurry the MFDs are. Thankfully I know the A10C well enough to fly from memory, but new modules like the F/A-18 or F-16C make me feel like Mr. Magoo. I have an RTX 3080, 32 GB of RAM, Ryzen 5 3600, DCS is on an M2 SSD, and am running on the Oculus Link cable. 2D I just set everything to Ultra and call it good. I don't expect that from a headset, but it's hard "getting my VR legs" when I can't tell if I'm getting motion sick from the game, the frames, or the blurry displays. I'll try the one posted by ppokit on Saturday when I get home today.
