  1. Hi All:

I've had a Saitek x52 pro for just a few months now and have never liked it. I find the flight stick too floppy, and the cable connecting the joystick to the throttle constantly loosens, killing power to the stick at the most inopportune times. The bottom line is that I'm building a new kickass rig and I'm looking for a worthy HOTAS to accompany it. Here are the current contenders along with some pros and cons I've gleaned from reading various forums and reviews:

    1) Hotas Warthog - seems like a wonderful system though a little pricey and doesn't come with a rudder solution. Also, seems like an undetermined small percentage of them are suffering some kind of problem with the throttle. Firmware related?

    2) Saitek X65f - novel approach with the force-sensing stick that most users seem to quickly get used to and enjoy. Also, it's more reasonably priced with no need to buy rudder pedals. I did notice that it lacks a 2-stage trigger, and was wondering if that was an issue at all. A final concern of mine is whether the connection between the throttle and stick has been improved from the shoddy x52 pro one.

    3) Logitech G940 - From what I gather, this stick was initially pretty buggy, but firmware updates have addressed much of what was wrong. I'm also wondering if the Force feedback is really worthwhile in DCS: Warthog or not. The price, considering that rudder pedals are included, seems the most reasonable of the three.

OK, so what I'm asking is for people who currently own one of the 3 aforementioned systems to correct any misconceptions i might have above, and to tell me how happy/unhappy they are with their purchase. Given the chance, would you buy the same hotas again if you had the opportunity? What are the strengths and weaknesses of your hotas, specifically concerning how well it works with DCS: Warthog?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

  2. My desk has a keyboard drawer that is lower than the table surface and slides in. The throttles would move so far forward that my finger tips would get trapped.

I also place my HOTAS (x52pro) on the slide out keyboard platform and to make room for the throttle in the full position i simply cut a 2.5" deep x 12" long slat out of the desktop edge with a jigsaw. Problem solved. (My gf tells me that it was at this point she started worrying about me.)

  3. None of the default Snapviews are pointed at the radio. There's one for the CDU, but it's slightly off. I'm not sure how to save these views though. I seem to remember reading that saving them doesn't work currently, so haven't really tried to.

Here's a method I've discovered to get the #2 keypad snapview to look at the entire CDU, compliments of the poster Crash_Fistfight.

    And I quote:

"Ok heres how to change the view angles for the snapviews. Bear in mind that this being a Beta Wags has already stated that modding files is a no no.

    1) Back up "DCS A-10C Beta\Config\View" folder.

    2) Open DCS A-10C Beta\Config\View\View.lua with notepad++ and set "UseDefaultSnapViews" on line 50 to false, save and exit.

    3) Open DCS A-10C Beta\Config\View\Snapviews.lua with notepad++. The A10C has the plane index 11 and the snapview index is the KP_No.+1 so 3 in the case of the CDU. I changed the value of line 970 from 19.something to 29.something which gives a fairly good view of the screen and keyboard."

This method works perfectly, and I suspect the same can be done for a good view of the radios, which I too, even with the benefit of Trackir 5, have trouble viewing clearly. Please take Crash's advice and BACKUP the file you are editing, and be sure to use notepad++ (free download) for changing any values.

Thanks again Crash for this very useful edit.

Kylania: I think you're correct in that eventually we'll be able to customize our views without the necessity of a manual edit.

  4. Yea but do you fire guns at over 5K feet in the air? I would start my dive from that high. So, I'd have an 'idea' as to where the target is and when low enough, I'd change my flight path when I spot the target. So the image above may show its tough to spot a human target, but I dont know if anyone would be firing guns from that high.

My problem is still getting 1K above ground, <1 NM and still seeing your target.

If you're doing a high angle dive onto the target, 5000ft above the top of a tank is exactly when you'd want to open up. However, I personally would not dive down hoping to "maybe" acquire a target on the way down. Either I know exactly where he is, or, using the TGP, I'll wait until I do.

  5. You shoot tanks from 0.5nm, everything else from 1nm or farther, at least AFAIK.

Sounds good, but as Beta 3 is currently modeled, the tank's mg would tear you up pretty good before you could pull away.

I open up on an MTB (from behind, ideally) from 1 nm and push the attack UNTIL i'm at .5 nm at which time I'll do a hard out of plane turn away from target.

It'll be nice when the tanks are correctly modeled to take damage from a greater stand-off distance as they would irl.

  6. I've done this type of post elsewhere, but here's a reference of about what you'd see from 1 nautical mile above. I know visual acuity varies from person to person, but in my experience this seems like a pretty accurate depiction. Do you really think you could see an infantryman from this slant range? I'd say you'd have your hands full finding a tank from this distance let alone a single manpad toting individual.

First, your English is fine. Perfectly understandable. Second, and perhaps more importantly, your attitude is excellent. You're curious and excited about this sim (as am I), and you're always respectful of other posters. A fine addition to the community in my opinion. Keep asking away, as I learn quite a bit from the answers your questions provoke.
