  1. Although I haven't attempted a conversion of a military helmet for computer use, I think you might also need to add an in-line amplifier for the military mic. I've converted lots of them for civilian aircraft use...just not sure computer audio is the same.

If that turns out to be the case, here's a good source for getting one.

  2. Hi mates,

The cross that is in your vision is it possible to turn it off or make it less obtrusive in the view?

I have the Rift, but this part should work the same in the Vive too. If you go to the VR tab in DCS, there should be a "Use Mouse" box. If you check that box, the cursor should only be visible when you're moving the mouse to click on things. I like leaving it off because I find I can click buttons faster by using the headset as my pointer. One other thing about using a VR headset is that you might lose control of the sim if your mouse ends up outside the game window, so hitting Alt+Enter when you enter the sim will make it full-screen on your monitor and you'll no longer have to worry about the mouse getting outside the window.

EDIT: DOH! Just saw your edit, but I'll leave this reply here, just in case someone else might have the same question.

  3. u also don't need to update to Windows 10. Just Windows 8. Pedantic, yes, but really what's actually holding you back from updating to 10 anyway - especially when it was free for so long.

Not to mention the fact that Windows 10 is leaps and bounds ahead of Windows 8. Its definitely worth upgrading. If he has Windows 7, Windows 10 is pretty close to it in how it operates, and opens up a whole new set of possibilities. An OEM version of Windows 10 Pro 64-bit can be had from several legitimate on-line retailers for about 140 bucks now. Microsoft is still offering the free upgrade to people who use assistive technology on their current system. Not sure what, if anything, is required to qualify for that, but that could be an option as well. For anybody upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, sometimes you might have card readers stop working due to lack of drivers, but there is a solution for that. After a lot of frustration and brain damage, I found that Windows 8.1 drivers work with Windows 10 for my card reader.

Sorry to go a little OT, this is meant to help the guys who are on the fence about upgrading their OS. :D

  4. Here's my setup. I rarely use the smaller touch-screen monitor anymore though, since I'm mostly flying in VR now with my Oculus Rift. Everything is mounted on a 2'X2' power tool cart, so I can just unplug it when I'm done and roll it away into a corner where its out of the way. I recently added a small stand behind the touchscreen to mount my Oculus sensor camera.

  5. i cant remember well but i was climbed 20000 feet and he shooted i had overweight dodged 1-2 missiled and i got smoked im sure it was sa 8

I've run user-created missions to learn the behaviors and limitations of several of the SAM systems in DCS so far, and if the SA-8 is all by himself, he hasn't been able to shoot at me if I'm above 16,400'. Maybe there's another variable we're missing. Which mission are you flying, FalconPlot16? I can give that a try and see if I get the same result as you're getting.

  6. Feels about right to me. But, when I first got into the VR side of the A-10C everything seemed huge. I think its just because I had gotten so used to having an undersized HUD, at an unrealistically-long viewing distance on the screen, with the screen a couple of feet away. In VR we're getting a more realistic sense of scale I think. I spend a lot of time in cockpits every day, just not in the A-10, but it feels about right compared to those.

  7. I had the same frustrations with using Mavericks until I came across this video on YouTube. It pretty much cleared everything up for me, and now I'm almost 100% deadly with the Maverick.

I've played around with the mark point method too, but so far it hasn't been too effective against mobile units. They tend to move when the first missile hits one of their buddies. I probably just need more practice though.

  8. Just something to try. If you have a DVI to HDMI adapter laying around, try plugging the Rift into that. My problems came up when I tried to extend the HDMI cable with just an HDMI extension (since the Rift manual says to only use the HDMI port, and that adapting the others won't work). When I did that, sometimes it would work, sometimes it would go black, depending on the game I was running. I did some looking around on Google and found a few people who had successfully used DVI to HDMI adapters to plug their extensions into. A DVI to HDMI adapter was only 10 bucks, so I figured I'd try it, even though it made no sense to me. IT WORKED! :D Same extension cable, but for some reason it worked when plugged into the DVI to HDMI adapter. Not sure why. Maybe there's a little more current-handling capability on the DVI port so the voltage doesn't drop as low when its under load.

Might be worth a shot to try plugging your Rift in that way. ;)

  9. As someone who just got his Rift, I wholeheartedly agree. The concept of VR in DCS was really appealing to me, but I had no idea what it would be like. I figured I'd just be sitting in the same cockpit, with the newly added ability of realistic head movement tracking. It turned out to be an experience beyond my wildest imagination. You can watch YouTube videos about it...have it explained to you...but you just don't fully understand until you put that HMD on for the first time.

Right before I got my Rift, I went through the painful process of getting DCS configured again to work with the mobile 'pit that I built, with Helios on the 24" touch-screen in the middle of it. Guess I won't be needing the monitor anymore. :P But I guess it'll still make a good place to hang a bracket for the Cougar MFDs that it once replaced. I think going back to the tactile feel of those OSBs will complete the VR experience. I won't be able to see them, but if you get enough time in a cockpit, you're not eyeballing switches anyway, you're finding them by muscle memory.

  10. Options => Gameplay Tab => Tool Tips => Uncheck

However...in my game doing that doesnt get rid of the tool tips,at least it doesnt in the Gazelle.

On a side note, my issues with the rift crashing has now been escalated to their customer support, will see what they suggest ( Already had 2 replies from them asking me to try various things...here's a shocker ...they haven't worked... oh well third time lucky I guess... )

Forgive me if you've already been asked this, but how do you have the HDMI cable connected to your computer? Are you directly connected to the HDMI port, or are you going through an HDMI extension? I started having random blackouts when I tried using an extension cable. Did some searching on Google and found someone who said that using the same extension cable with a DVI to HDMI adapter fixed their problem. Seemed impossible that it would help, but I tried it, and it worked. Not sure if your situation is anything like that or not.

  11. I know it's a question to Oculus Tech support, but they so far failed to address it on their forum and in my ticket! I am having this issue:

    https://forums.oculus.com/developer/discussion/33743/cv1-oculussetup-exe-fails-ovrlibraryservice-terminated

Did someone here have experienced it and found a solution? Is it maybe possible to install some "bare-minimum" drivers for CV1 instead? I want to try my new rift while waiting for 1080, to make sure it was not DOA.

    Thanks!!!

    Hi Impalor,

You've probably already tried this, but have you made sure to temporarily disable your anti-virus software before trying to run the setup program? Some virus scanners don't like the Oculus software and will cause problems with installation.

  12. The training mission settings override those set globally - you should be able to switch off the feature within a mission by opening it in the mission editor, but it may be that specific missions have protection that will prevent you doing so.

It would of course be a huge improvement if the tool tips window was just large enough to contain the text. It is a huge immersion killer right now.

Just tried using the mission editor to turn off the tool tips in training missions, and it worked like a champ. That made a HUGE difference in the ability to learn my way around the cockpit without those annoying text boxes popping up.

    Thanks Neil! :D

  13. Stop moving the mouse and it will disappear in a few seconds.

Tool tips can be switched off in the options menu.

Yup. The crosshairs only seem to appear when tooltips are active, or when the "Use Mouse" box is unticked in the VR menu. The mouse and VR headset pointer crosshairs seem to interfere with each other if that box is unticked as well, causing loss of control because the pointer has wandered outside the game window.

Does anybody know how to turn the tooltips off in a training mission? I have them turned off in the main setup, but they are still active in training missions. Its kinda difficult to complete training missions with the mouse/VR headset pointer interference issues. If I use mouse only, it works flawlessly.
