  1. IIRC something like this was even available in Flanker 1.0, where you could place an aircraft with only a start/takeoff waypoint and mission type set as GAI (Ground Alert Intercept), whereby the sim would spawn and dispatch the interceptors upon detecting enemy aircraft.

I'm unsure whether this actually required EWR/AWACS/SAM radar systems to be placed on the map and detect the aircraft or if the AI "air defence chain" was as omniscient as the current one in DCS. I definitely remember reading in the manual about air defence integration and stuff.

It"s been a few years so I won't eat my hat if I'm wrong on this but...

  2. Tried decrabbing just before touchdown?

That is, kicking rudder in the direction the crosswind is blowing (to) and applying aileron I the opposite direction, into the wind. Maybe you're not supposed to in the 16, but what the heck.

  3. I also find the Viper easier to land than the Bug, even on a field, because it's easier to maintain a stable thrust and thus a stable glide path. There is something with the Hornet throttles that makes that hard.

Part of the reason might also be that the landing technique is closer to how I land light aircraft IRL...

And of course, my many hours in "that other sim" 10-15 years ago might have something to do with it...

  4. I'd like to add that the A-10C has a pretty complicated HOTAS for managing all the systems, which quickly becomes frustrating to use with anything less than the actual Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog joystick and throttle duo.

Try reading Chuck’s guide to the aircraft and see what you think.

  5. The attack Viggen (AJ and AJS) was designed for low level strikes on pre-planned (known or at least anticipated, like certain shipping) targets.

I can only imagine doing CAS or SEAD with it being a pain. If the location of the SAM system is known of course, the BK90 might do the job. It's not really SEAD in the traditional (US/NATO terminology) sense though.

  6. At least the JA-37 Viggen and maybe also the Tornado ADV could guide two Sky Flash missiles (Sparrow derivative) simultaneously at different targets. Don't know how much that depended on the radar vs on the missile.

  7. I may be confusing the Mig-21 with some other aircraft, but it could be that the AOA indicator in the cockpit isn't showing AOA in degrees but in some arbitrary "AOA units".

Edit: If so, that value should be lower than the one in the info bar though (the point with the non-degree units is probably to have easier-to-read numbers) .

  8. It's so sad. Actually, even Su-27 Flanker 1.0 AI was capable of flying an almost nap-of-the-earth profile (50 m AGL IIRC) and do a low level bomb drop.

I sometimes get the feeling that the current AI was desgned purely with helicopters (Ka-50) and fixed wing CAS (A-10C) in mind and left at that while the sim has expanded.

Overall, I'm disapponited in the whole need for scripting. The mission designer should be able to simply select a task, make a flight plan, possibly selecting a target (waypoint) if the mission is any kind of strike/pin point attack and then the AI should do the rest, dynamically, on its own.

  9. I can agree with ED's position only in the sense that this is not something that third parties should *have to* do.

It ought to be implemented centrally by ED so that it is available to all developers and works well together with other aspects of the simulation (for an example resource management in MP and any future dynamic campaign system).

Of course, like everything else, it needs to be done ASAP.

  10. Atm not planned.

As Alicatt says you’ll need your joystick to control the radar in the backseat and if you have the lantirn you will need it for that as well.

Too bad. It would likely make single-piloting the two-crewed aircraft much easier and the controls could be solved with either a shift/toggle function or by having a separate stick for RIO stuff.

Please consider at least making it an option!
