  1. Okay, someone want to translate? I get that it is an advanced ir tracking system, but beyond that my Russian is a bit rusty;)
  2. I caught the last half of it and it was more about the Afghan/Soviet war than anything else. I mean, they rarely showed any footage of the plane, or even talked about it all that much. Maybe all that info was in the beginning. Hope it's on again.
  3. Well you could always volunteer and buy him one yourself!:music_whistling:
  4. If your willing to spend around $1500 I'd suggest a westinghouse 42" 1080p. Very good screen for very little considering the size. I'll never go back to a smaller screen again.
  5. *Johnny Carson voice* I did not know that! I've never heard of the Rooivalk, has it not seen any combat, or in too small numbers? I'm probably just sheltered.
  6. To me this looks like an updated version of the Italian Augusta Mangusta.
  7. Pilotasso's right, even if such "Plasma" stealth exists, I can't begin to imagine the amount of energy needed to maintain a constant field or even a brief one. From an energy/cost standpoint alone, I don't see how it is effective. As long as we're dreaming, why not take the energy spent making "plasma" and create a magical force field that is impervious to impact... Blah... Next topic.
  8. Seems to me that if you want peripheral vision, the closest you're going to get is either surrounding yourself with monitors, or using the emagin z800 vr thingie. The z800 is a low resolution, but has the potential for 3d I think. The main problem with any type of headset right now is fatigue. I can barely stand to be less than 2 feet from my monitor, but less than and inch... I can only (e)magin the the headaches. Once they up the resolution and refresh it should have more promise.
  9. Definitely the Razorworks Enemy Engaged series. It was a pretty complete sim when it realeased, and although a bit simplified, the mods keep making it more and more realistic. Arneh, just figured out how to make a decent start up sequence instead of pushing one button and you're flying. He also added autorotation. I'm amazed how much has been done every time I play it.
  10. battlefield2 choppers to me are way too touchy. Almost like I'm on the head of a pin waiting to tip over. EECH on the other hand is intuitive. I don't know if BF2 is really all that realistic though.
  11. Great work Will Bill! I wanted to say this on the touchbuddy forum, but whenever I try it tells me I don't have the access or something. But nonetheless, this is awesome!
  12. What other things do they do that are strange to you IguanaKing? Always fun to see something different but work just as well, so I'm curious.
  13. No, it's a thumbprint reader, like on the new ibm notebooks. A quick scan and everything turns on, the plane takes off, and automatically puts you on the bandit's six. :D It almost looks like some new AOA meter, but I have no idea either.
  14. I think we haven't seen a lot better is because they probably don't sell many of them. The companies don't want to risk making one with better resolution that costs another 500 dollars or so (complete ballpark figure) just to sell less of them. So, they keep putting these lower res ones out thinking that this magical time if they sell a lot, then they can make a higher res one. They just keep testing the market, and keep getting the same result. They don't get that bumping up the resolution would cause them to be far more successful than they think. And so they don't take the risk. I don't know if I'm really making sense here, but this is my brain at work.

  16. Exactly. It functions as another axis on the throttle, like a rotary but it slides on a flat plane. It has very little resistence too. I personally have it set to radar range or flir zoom in helicoptor sims. It's a little un-ergonomic at times, but nothing to really worry about. :)If you like light springs, then you would be happy with the X52 in that area. I'm much better at carrier landings because of the precison I can achieve now.
  17. Manny- Is the spring similar to the X45 but Saitek redesigned the spring guide and plate such that movement is finer but there is still a stiff feel to a new X52? No, not at all. It is very light a CH stick might be lighter, but the spring tension has remained consistent for as long as I've had it (about 8 months) Can you provide more detail on the LCD? It appears to dominate a majority of the base of the throttle. It has the function of a clock on the bottom with the ablility to switch between 3 different time zones. There is also a stopwatch. Useful to some, but I just use it as a general clock. In the middle is the info center part which tells you what profile is loaded and what function a button has but only while that button is being pressed. The top simply tells you what mode you're in. The best part to me is the ability to navigate/load the different profiles in the info center part. All you do is press the "i" button on the throttle and navigate around with the primary hat switch. Can you expound on the "Safe Mode" button you mentioned in your opinion works as it should now? Certainly. The cover locks in the position you want it. You flick it up with your thumb and it stays up. You put it back down with your thumb and it stays down and doesn't flop around like my old X36 did. When I looked at a picture of the stick, it appeard one would have to remove their hand from the stick just top manipulate certain features??? If you want to use either the buttons on the base or the toggle switches, you will have to remove a hand. Mouse wheel doesn't work as well as I'd like Can you compare that to the mouse on the X45 please? Can't really help you there. I only had an x36. It didn't have a mouse wheel. The x52 as you scroll the mouse wheel will register a button push every couple of clicks, so it works, but I was hoping more of a smooth action so I could use it to zoom smoothly. But the precision slider acomplishes that pretty well, so I really shouldn't complain. The rest of the mouse is the same as the x45/36 as far as I can tell except that you can't program it as a hat switch. You have to use bands to get individual key presses. Annoying, but not unworkable. The newer drivers/software can be a nightmare to get set up correctly depending on your system. Hmmm....this should be the easy part since it it easy on the X45. Well, the drivers and software that come with it are fine. The updated drivers and software have caused problems to some (myself included). The new driver is downloaded through winupdate and didn't work for me. I had to completely clear out the registry and harddrive of the new drivers simply to go back to old ones. I've heard that another driver/software update is coming up soon, but who knows when. I think I need to write longer posts. What, like 1000 words for 2 posts?:icon_wink
  18. I have the X52. TH GOOD: The spring rate is fine once you get used to it. I never bought the X45 because I hated how heavy the spring was, but that's more personal preference. Twisty stick isn't as bad as I thought, at first I didn't like it. After getting used to it, it's okay because the tension is strong enough that you don't move it when you're trying to do something else. The LCD is useful in that I can switch between different profiles in game (A10, Su25T, F15) pretty easily. The Stick is more comfortable than the X45/36 Everything feels right where it should be, maybe because it's adjustable;) ThE BAD: X45/36 Throttle to me is more comfortable (go figure, the stick gets better the throttle gets worse.) There is a twisty stick Toggle switches to me are nice, but akward to get to. I always have to look at them to know which one i'm pressing. The precision slider is weird sometimes as well. The detents aren't as strong as the X45/36 I always feel as though I never really know where the afterburner is even with the friction knob turned all the way up. Mouse wheel doesn't work as well as I'd like The newer drivers/software can be a nightmare to get set up correctly depending on your system. THE AWESOME: Price. For what you get it's hard to beat. Mounting holes to attach the controllers to to my chair made my life better. The mode switch is finally in a place that makes sense to me and since it has DIFFERENT color LEDs to signify what mode it's in, I don't have to try to read print that's on the stick. The SAFE button cover over the launch button finally works like it should have on the previous sticks. The fact that you lock out the twist function. When I get pedals again I have that option. That's all I can think of. Obviously most of this is personal preference, but I don't think I'm alone.
