  1. Running a DCS dedicated server under wine works very well and for a "hobby" I'm willing to take the risk that it might break. Don't worry, my "production" environments will never see Windows anywhere. But that's an off-topic discussion, I guess. My main concern is about IPv6. The world is rapidly running out of IPv4 addresses, they are getting increasingly hard to get and expensive and - at least in my vicinity - more and more Providers start to offer connectivity w/o IPv4 (or severely crippled, like CGN, NAT64, ...). Even large Providers like AWS or smaller but popular ones like Hetzner have started to offer IPv6 by default and make it increasingly hard to get v4. IPv6 is almost 25 years old and I wonder why/if there is no first class support in DCS.
  2. Thanks, that worked. However that seems to be a recent regression. My windows clock is always off by one hour because it doesn't play nicely with dual boot. Why do you need to change this just now? This seems like an overly tight check.
  3. Hi, DCS is loading painfully slow from my spinning disk, so I plan to get an SSD, move/reinstall DCS to the SSD and enjoy (hopefully) faster loading times. Is this a change that requires a re-activation? Should I deactivate my license before installing the SSD? Please advise!
  4. Just received my key. Thank you very much. You guys rock! :pilotfly:
  5. That'd be nice, indeed. Didn't hear anything from LS so far.
  6. DCS Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight, please :)
  7. Please do that. That would help a lot. As would using a proper CDN.
  8. Lucky dude. My flight stuff is a few hundert km from where I'm in the next few days :(
  9. Thanks for that x-mas present Wags. Glad I did already buy FC3 :pilotfly:
  10. Uhm ... no. Well ... it's close enough ;) As far as this discussion is concerned I herby define "running on Linux" as "running on a distribution that runs a linux kernel" ;)
  11. Based on what facts? They can very vell. Usually they buy "solutions" not software packages. Those may very well include everything they need to run the software. Did you hear what the US military did with their UAV control software? They gave a multi-million dollar contract to Raytheon to port it from windows to linux. If they want/need something they get is. Money is not important with an organisation this large. And as soon as the US military adopts something it becomes immedeately interesting to lot more countries (their allies).
  12. I respectfully disagree with you on that one. Steam will provide an infrastructure to build upon. Of course devs will still have to do all of the porting BUT steam WILL provide them with many things that has stopped companies even considering Linux for a long time: - a well defined environment (i.e. Ubuntu) - high-quality graphic drivers (Valve is working w/ Intel and Nvidia, and they have already made noteable progress) - easy packaging/deployment Of course it is still a HUGE task to port all that nifty DX10/11 "tricks" to OpenGL, but it's getting increasignly more easy. ID Software has shown that it is very well possible to make games that run perfectly fine on any major OS (Win, Mac, Linux). They did it right (used OpenGL) and alas porting was a no-brainer for them.
  13. Well, I suppose that changes - at least a bit - when there is a stable Steam on Linux.
  14. I like steam a lot, since it allows me to easily run any game I own on any PC I want as long as it has steam installed am I sign in with my account there. Too sad, that ED doesn't trust the Steam DRM. That would allow me to run DCS on any PC but only as long as I'm signed in to my Steam account. And - most importantly - Steam is coming to Linux. Very, very soon. The beta is already there. I know that Steam is a bit difficult for ED, but it would be AMAZING to have *full* DCS/Steam integration (w/ ingame Steam chat, Steam DRM instead of Starforce, etc.). Third-Parties could also make use of Steam to sell and protect their DLCs!
  15. Too sad that there is this stupid DRM. I'd prefer to have the game bound to an user account (like in multiplayer) but have no DRM in return (i.e. you would need to be online to play in singleplayer).
  16. Hi, after playing around with FC3 some time I have to admit that FC3 really rocks. It's a great improvement in many areas and great fun to play! *happycustomer*
  17. Dear ED, please improve the default controller profiles shipped with the DCS modules. I've got the "full" TM equipment (TM HOTAS Warthog, TM Cougar MFDs) and Saitek Pro Flight Combat Rudder Pedals. Besides A-10C the default controller settings are completely unuseable with those devices. After updating to 1.2.2 and installing FC3 all planes had their rudder input assigned to the throttles left axis (which should, obviously, be assigned to the left engine). Most other axis were assigned to all devices, even to the MFDs which don't have axis (only buttons). And most function keys are either not assigned at all (only on keyboard) or assigned to weired keys/buttons/axis. Reassigning those axis and buttons is very cumbersome due to the small "input device mapping box" in the options menu. Please provide proper profiles, at least for the most common input devices (like the TM HOTAS Warthog and the Logitech gear). Thanks! P.S.: A more flexible input device mapping tool would be super-cool, too.
  18. +1 An Vietnam or Afghanistan Theater would be awesome. I think P-51D is a good example, it's an very interesting plane and probably ultra-realistic (never flown a real one, so can't tell) but it's missing opponents. It's similar for some of the other planes (altough they mostly have close-enough counterparts).
  19. @Nate: The new missile FM announcement might have confused some users.
  20. The SU-25T(M) is an pretty impressive aircraft. Having it at DCS level would be certainly most interesting. I'd probably buy it. However I doubt we'll ever see it being released. It makes little sense to me from a marketing POV.
  21. Uhm, you're kidding, right? If not: Get yourself the TM HOTAS Warthog. It's the perfect match ;)
