Almost every one of our missions, someone RTBs with combat damage. I don't know how many times I've brought in a damaged Sabre with no brakes or hydraulics.
I understand why it's a low priority, but it would definitely see use in DCS.
A Saber. Sure. Again you probably aren’t getting hit by missiles. WWII aircraft you get to land damaged all the time. Really that’s the best fun you can have in a flight sim. But getting to do that in 4th gen jets is exceedingly rare. Plus you have an ejection seat so odds are you’d just eject vs trying to land with damage. I would guess the hook is for system failures like hydraulics when you have no flaps or brakes. It’s also used for rejected takeoffs. I’m not really against the feature since again I’m all up for emergency landings. But I can see why this would be a low priority.

Oh yeah. I did the Maple Flag A-10 course which takes you through all that. It’s great. The Hog is definitely a plane you can get the chance to bring home all full of holes.

It’s a nice touch of authenticity but hey maintenance guys, can you fix this?

When centering zoom, the game will jump to the middle value of CameraViewAngleLimits, e.g. if it's set to 20/140, centering will result in 80° FoV.
It would be great to be able to change the limits (e.g. to 20/102 for a 61° FoV) so the centered zoom matches the default view.
I’m not sure if this is what you're asking for, but the centered “normal” zoom value can be set by pressing RAlt+Num0. This command “save cockpit view angles” will save head position and zoom level per aircraft as a default.

Not true. Play more, less forum.
Sorta off topic but… I’m not necessarily saying this is incorrect, a modern jet fighter is by design not too survivable. It’s a fuel tank wrapped around a jet engine. Plus you’re usually getting hit in the game by a missile warhead. The state of the systems modeling certainly varies by module and their state of completion. But the bottom line is landing a damaged jet is something that will very rarely happen in DCS. I understand though that’s not the only use case for this system.

Actually, you have several Viper and Hornet users that could make use of such a system as per their defense strategy. Sweden, Finland, Norway all share the same basic plan for a Soviet/Russian invasion in that the fighter squadrons scatter. In those scenarios you'd need either an aircraft with a hook in order to land on those short A runways, or an aircraft that can throw the thrust into reverse (like the Viggin). So part of the turn-around for the aircraft in those scenarios is to have the ground crew reset the hook while the pilot goes and takes five minutes to get a snack.
Cool. The video said “emergency” landing. I figured that was the use case for these. I guess the “emergency” is a short runway

I can’t quite see how you’d ever get the chance to use this in DCS. Unless you had random system failures enabled and just happened to have one that required this. The nature of combat damage in the sim is that you’re just completely destroyed nearly all the time. You wouldn’t get the chance to bring in a damaged jet. Unless it’s an A-10 which doesn’t have a hook. That’s the only DCS jet which I think combines survivability with a really accurate damage model. I really dig crash landings though so I’m all for it the Hog is the only modern plane I’ve done that in here and it was awesome!

i helped on the post flappie linked but never got any feedback from the OP.
see if anything there helps.
essentially rename \Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Scripts to \Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Scripts.bak. retry dcs.
Ok I can try that. The crash only happened that once and hasn’t repeated. I don’t experience that very often at all. Thanks

Another error on the same server, in this case it awarded a kill which did not occur. The game scoreboard showed a kill for me against Sting 1-1 who was actually downed by a SAM.

I have set fps to 120 fix both Nvidia panel and in dcs settings.
I have read that the DCS frame limiter can cause problems. You could try disabling it by raising it to the max value. In any case you don’t need both limiters enabled. The NCP one is enough.

Needs a whole new Engine built from scratch
That will never happen. There have always been continual improvements, it’s not necessary or possible to just redo everything from scratch. DCS runs fine for the vast majority of players. There’s nothing to worry about when upgrading hardware in this regard.

Even though my frames are maxed out most of the time, turning on DLSS makes my graphics card run cooler with no ill effects so I run it.
Not sure what temps you get but a GPU can run at about 80d C with no trouble. But yeah the reason DLSS looks good for you is you’re already getting a high frame rate. In DCS it’s hard for me to evaluate DLSS because I’m overkill on GPU. But in MSFS where that game will tax even my specs DLSS looks freakin awful! No thanks. It might be a ok way to boost from 80FPS to 120. But trying to use it to get from say 30 to 60 is pointless. Now the frame doubling feature (DCS does not have) can kinda look ok depending on the situation. I hate the idea of games being designed to be unplayable without resorting to DLSS.

The best thing to eliminate ghosting is not to use DLSS at all.
This DLSS looks ok only if you’re already getting a high enough frame rate that you don’t need it. I can’t see how it makes any sense. DLAA actually looks good but again only at a high FPS

Yes. And maintain the size when the game or module is restarted.

That could be a success, but is probably prohibitively expensive
Uh yeah… buying and testing the all the latest $1,600 GPUs If you get millions of hits you can get vendors to buy you the gear but not for a niche game like this.

That’s certainly true. You can make out small aircraft details and markings. Your ability to ID things goes way up. Also the game, well every game, just looks gorgeous. Unfortunately depending on the Spotting Dots setting, lower res screens will put big black dots over distant aircraft and make them visible at 20-30 miles. Not a big deal if you’re playing SP and want to turn it off but be aware that other players online don’t need radar to see you. Personally I’d rather play a realistic and gorgeous looking game than have a cheat.

Funny that when it entered service they compared it to F-15C and the hatred poured all over it:
- it can't turn
- it's slow
- it has short legs
and now it's OP, LOL.
Well arguably it would be an even better aircraft without compromises like VTOL. But it would still be completely OP in DCSW. And in the real or game world stealth vs. non-stealth is like shooting fish in a barrel.

I think it could be fun to fly against an F-35. You could team-up against it, or design the mission in other ways that gives you at least a fighting chance. Surely would be interesting...
In Red Flag the F-35 has a 20:1 kill ratio against its adversaries. Good luck

I think an AI F-35 (and F-22) would be a good place to start. Surely the amount of data required for that must be lower, and there must be more available than in 2012 or 2015?
What would be the point of an AI F-35? It would either be a kill-stealing Uber wingman or an unbeatable adversary.
And the plane is just as classified today as it was then. It’s still a current active duty aircraft, nothing has changed in that regard.
A 5th gen fighter would be overkill in 4th gen DCSW. What fun would it be just wiping out obsolete enemies? Like flying a modern jet in WWII.- 1

Yes. The “Off” setting just reverts the dot back to the 2.8 version. You need to restart for it to take effect.

Most people in DCS probably have the pilot turned off, so…
Will the Hook ever be functionally implemented ?

Of course. DCS has a random failures setting you can enable now. If they're done realistically they’d be extremely rare though. At the rate most people play games they’d likely never experience one. I had a bird strike and engine failure on takeoff in the A-10C. It was awesome! I got to pull the fire extinguisher and abort the takeoff. But that’s once in 12 years of playing the game.
Again, exceedingly rare. Cool. But rare.
