  1. Of the many books I've read regarding helo flying in Vietnam, that seems to be THE ONE that I haven't gotten to yet. I've heard it's incredible, and can't wait to add it to my list.

I´m reading it right now (almost done actually) and have to say when it comes to the topic of Hueys in Vietnam I liked both "Snake Pilot" and especially "To The Limits" much better. "Rattler One-Seven" seems to lack a certain... well... "flow" to it. It´s more a collection of various stories which feel detached from each other even though they all happened during the author´s tour. Also, often various soldiers, pilots etc. are introduced at great length only to never be heard of again just one paragraph later. Last but not least I have noticed a number of grammar and spelling mistakes, something I consider unacceptable for a professional publishing company (then again, that might be the pedantic German in me speaking, so take it with a grain of salt).

That being said, it´s still a good book and despite the above shortcomings I enjoyed reading it. A large part of the book is dedicated to Lam Son 719, and those parts are actually quite interesting (and seriously hair-raising, I might add). Just don´t expect even the tiniest bit of technical information in the book, because there is absolutely none.

  2. No matter how stupid their comments, I would ask myself two questions: Will arguing with this person change their mind? Will arguing with this person change the greater situation you are arguing about? If no to either, don't waste the time. While some may disagree on it being a waste of time when it comes to politics, it makes me a much happier individual to not bother with it.

Funnily enough, I live by that very same policy. Sure does make for a peaceful life, huh?

  3. I´ve read the book a couple weeks ago and can´t praise it enough. Easily among the five best books I have ever read in my entire life. The first book that actually made me cry (not because of that one moment, but because of... ah well, read it yourself ;)).

Awesome, awesome, awesome book. If you have even just a slight interest in aerial combat, you cannot pass this book. Just check out the customer reviews over at Amazon. More than a thousand reviews, and the book scores a rock solid rating of five stars.

Trust me, buy it! You will LOVE the book.

  4. Sure, just open up the rearming window (press LALT + ') and knock yourself out.

However, be advised that in the real world an A-10 either carries tanks or weapons, never both. Going into combat with external tanks is a big no-no for the A-10.

  5. Hey,

I don't know if already mentioned as it is only a very minor thing, but the german Hueys, at least with the skin that is provided, belong to the Army Aviation.

In the editor it says Airforce. Maybe that could be changed for the final release.

Well, up until just recently, the Luftwaffe did fly the UH-1D, so maybe we should just have both to choose from.

Before I forget: I too think that the ETL vibrations are way too heavy.

The developers stated they overemphasized the vibrations on purpose since you lack the "seat of the pants" feel telling you about the ETL transition in the real Huey.

  6. If its not Boeing I aint going.

Oh come on, I really did think the intelligence level on these forums would prevent such a statement to be made...

As for how an Airbus would have behaved, here´s some reading material: http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/tech_ops/read.main/335863/1/

In short: No aircraft is foolproof. If a pilot is incompetent enough or even wants to crash the airplane, the airplane will crash. No matter if it´s a Boeing, an Airbus, an Embraer, a Sukhoi, a Tupolev, a what-have-you.

  7. 1) Whats the proper way to lock on to targets with a Maverick? I have trouble slewing on to a tank, as the sensor is not stabilized. If the tank is SPI, set from a TGP point track, slaving the mav doesn't establish a lock. My wingman (AI) fired two mavs in one pass, so I'm hoping there's a way.

Try ground-stabilizing the Mav by pressing TMS down short (the Mav needs to be SOI). This will make it look at a certain point on the ground without moving. Now you can slew it around much easier. You also may wanna try to mess around with the slew speeds. Some guys like it faster, some like it slower.

With a bit of practice and a proper HOTAS you can easily fire up to six Mavs in a single run. Not that six Mavs would be a realistic loadout, but it can be done nevertheless.

    2) Coming from a F-18 sim, I feel a little blind without a radar. In the hog, is your best sensor the mark-1 eyeball? I haven't flown many missions with a JTAC; is that how we get our targets?
There are a lot of ways of finding targets: Eyeballs, your TGP, JTAC, other flights, groundtroops begging for help...

Situational awareness is the name of the game. When driving an A-10 you need to know the battlefield by heart. Once you have a general idea of where the enemy might lurk, use the magic that is the TGP and hunt them down. Try to search in a methodical pattern, don´t just go all over the place, looking here and there and then back here again.

Moving convoys are easy to spot, they stick out like a sore thumb when travelling on roads, and when travelling offroad they usually create a lot of dust. Units in hiding are harder to make out, but just ask yourself "if I were a tank in this town, where would I hide?" and look that place up with your TGP. More often than not you´re actually lucky, and once you find one tank you know there are more around in close distance.

If all else fails there´s of course always the option of "Recon by fire"... :D

It takes quite a while to find targets when you are new at this, don´t let that discourage you. After some time it will just magically come together all of a sudden and you will ask yourself why you ever had problems with it. Practice, practice, practice!

    3) Num0 + Num# has views for MFDs, panels, HUD. Is there a way to have this view toggled, rather than needing to hold Num0?
Sorry, can´t help you here since I use TrackIR

PS: slap me and say that TrackIR and X52pro are worth it.
Can´t speak for the X52pro in particular since I don´t own it, but a good HOTAS is very helpful when flying the A-10. Most guys seem to be pretty happy with their X52s. I hate to sound like a fanboy, but personally, I just love my TM Warthog HOTAS more than any other piece of hardware I own. Most amazing stick and throttle I ever had, but of course that kind of quality comes with a corresponding price tag.

As for the TrackIR... you haven´t lived until you used it. Some time ago mine broke and I stopped simming altogether until the replacement arrived. I just couldn´t fly without it. No way. I sure as hell tried, but... meh.

The TrackIR is one of those things you look at after you have gotten used to it, thinking "how in the world did I ever fly without it?"

  8. I was a machine gunner for most of my army life, and I can tell you that it´s no problem at all to seriously f*ck up a truck or even a light APC with a machine gun. Heck, I could even cut through brick walls with it, and dropping a tree was not really a problem either.

Granted, that was with an MG3 (the modern day MG42) which fires a lot more rounds per minute than the M60, but it´s the same caliber (7.62x51).

With some experience it was even possible to deal a mission kill to a full blown MBT. Pretty risky, but perfectly doable if you knew what you were doing.

BTW, does anyone else think the sound of the M60 in the game is completely wrong? To me, the M60 always had a very distinctive sound and was easily recognizable, while the M60 in the game sounds rather generic.

  9. I own the Saitek pedals as well and am quite happy with them. I do think they are a little too pricey for what they do, but oh well. The market for rudder pedals is in serious lack of competition, so they get away with the price.

Nevertheless, the pedals are nice and IMHO a must-have. Can´t speak for the KA-50 since it´s the only module I don´t own, but the P-51 and especially the Huey benefit a lot from rudder pedals. Even the A-10 is much more fun to handle with rudder pedals. Granted, the A-10 doesn´t need rudder input as much as the other machines, but it´s still nice to perfectly decrab in a crosswind situation.

Also I like to set up certain things like weapon profiles etc. while taxiing to the active, and that gets a lot easier when you have both hands free because you steer the airplane with your feet.

If nothing else, it frees up your hand so you can wave and salute sharply as you roll along the crowd at the flightline which enthusiastically cheers and waves after your flawless aerobatics display just a few minutes ago... :D

  10. besides taxiing and crosswind landings, or is that it?

Personally, I take my feet off the pedals once I´m airborne and in a stable climb and don´t put them back on until I´m on finals. If it weren´t for crosswinds and taxiing, I could probably fly the A-10 without rudders altogether.

Of course I make up for it by flying the Huey and the Mustang. Both will bite you hard if you even think of taking your feet off the pedals. :P

  12. Set brakes (so feet OFF my combat pedals, to my surprise)

Make sure you invert your brakes axis so they´ll work correctly. To do this go to the Options menu, select "Axis commands" from the drop down list, highlight the left brake and click on "Edit Axis". Now tick the "Invert Axis" box and save. Rinse and repeat for the right hand brake.

  13. The war, no matter how terrible it was, is and always will be a part of our history and using the historically correct symbology in movies or games depicting it should not be seen as an attempt to glorify or bring back the horrible and fanatical regimes of the past.

That´s the way I see it as well, and personally, I think this particular law is quite stupid. Especially since it´s only illegal to distribute or display said symbols in public unless a bunch of criteria are met. When it comes to your private use, you can do pretty much anything you like.

This sometimes leads to weird situations. As a hobby, I build plastic scale models (1/48 scale) and pride myself in making them as accurately as I possibly can, which can easily lead to build times of up to a year per model.

Now, even though those models are not really toys and depict a historical machine, it is not allowed for the manufacturers to include swastikas in their decal sheets if they wanna sell their model in Germany. Therefore I am forced to buy those decals in the surrounding countries, which is perfectly legal again. In fact, there are quite a few companies who have specialized in printing nothing but sheets full of swastika decals to be sold to German model builders.

Ironically, I usually buy these sheets from a company in Poland, because they produce great quality and the price is reasonable as well. So I need to buy those swastikas in Poland of all places, the one country on earth that has suffered under the Nazis like no other, and yet they have no problem selling me swastikas. Just goes to show how ridiculous this law really is, especially in today´s times of free trade and open borders within the EU.

But oh well, it is the law, and as long as it is, I need to obey it, no matter how stupid I think it is.

You can actually delete the swastika right on the plane yourself, it´s in your neighbourhood at the http://www.luftfahrtmuseum-hannover.de/ in Laatzen :P

Hehe, I actually knew that. ;) Been to that place many times since it´s practically right next to my doorstep. Very cool museum.
