  1. Hasn't anyone figured this out already? You have to call the air boss and tell him to turn off the tractor beam!
  2. That's how insignia is worn on many (but not all) uniforms in the U.S. The American flag patch is worn so that the flag is facing forward relative to the direction the wearer faces. Imagine a flag being flown over a soldier and the wind blowing at the soldier's face. Looking at the soldier's right side, the star field is in front and the stripes to the rear.
  3. I tried that soundpack and wasn't impressed by it, especially with the GAU-8 and engine sounds from inside the cockpit. I hear an echo after releasing the trigger (which would make sense if heard from the ground, not the cockpit) and the engines don't have that distinct whine which the GE turbofans have. I think the vanilla sounds are more accurate than this.
  4. Been running Windows 8 and 8.1 with DCS and not a single problem!
  5. I built my own computer last year after years of being out of the loop too. A lot has changed, but it's all manageable once you sift through the marketing B.S. and gimmicks manufacturers are slapping on their components today. I'd go for an i7 for DCS if you can afford it, but an i5 will do the job well too. An i7 will handle it more smoothly than anything else and you should get a few good years out of it. AMD is okay if you're on a strict budget, like me. You get better computing power per dollar, but their fastest processor is about equal to an i5 2500k in gaming applications. Motherboards are like RAM. They're dirt cheap. I wouldn't pay more than $80 for one, unless you need specialized functions, like wireless networking or multi-GPU support. PCI-E speed should be 16x and make sure the allowable RAM speed is at least 1600 MHz. As for a GPU, I wouldn't spend any more than $200 for a decent card if you're running one monitor. My Radeon 7850 HD never lags behind and I paid $180 for it last year. 1 GB of RAM is recommended, but no more than that. Clock speed is most important. I too recommend Windows 8.1. I'm sure you're no stranger to people scoffing about Windows 8, but I love it. It's a world of difference in terms of speed, file management, and even compatibility with older programs. The UI definitely has a learning curve, but once I got used to it, I found it's faster to navigate my files in Windows 8 than any past version of Windows.
  6. Experienced this bug too. Noticed it breaks when I click and hold with the mouse button and use the mouse axis to change the dial. Only remedy is to restart the mission. Seems to work fine with the mouse scroll.
  7. I thought the visual effects were extraordinary! That opening sequence and the space station falling through the atmosphere couldn't have been done better, but I didn't feel like the story was anything spectacular. Suspenseful, yes, but I felt like the story was only a couple inches deep. So much more could've been done with it to give us more reason to care about Sandra Bullock's character and root for her. It felt too mechanical in that aspect. In retrospect, I wish I had seen it in IMAX because some of those shots were incredible!
  8. I know! I wish a developer would buy the code and make a game out it. Can you imagine an economy, exploration, or physics sim on that kind of scale??? :joystick:
  9. To anyone who likes sandboxes, I've always found this program incredibly fascinating. It really puts the scale of the universe into perspective and the procedurally generated planets are deeply detailed. And to anyone interested, it's free to use, though I do recommend giving a donation because the guy who created it did a phenomenal job! http://en.spaceengine.org
  10. Here's a great pilot POV video of an F/A-18F Super Hornet at the 2011 NAS Oceana Air Show: And to think these guys get paid to do this! :D
  11. Water, ground clutter/trees, scenes, and global draw distance are mostly GPU. Turning down the global draw distance and ground clutter seems to have the greatest effect on performance. 50 km for global, 6 km for trees, and 1 km for ground clutter works well for me. Water quality doesn't seem to affect my GPU performance at all. Civilian traffic and scenery draw distance is mostly CPU. Medium visibility offers the best performance and quality for me. I turn civilian traffic off if I'm flying combat missions and turn it on high when I'm doing TAGs. he fact of it being on will have a tremendous effect on your CPU performance, especially with combat occurring. That being said, your i7 shouldn't have a problem handling either of these options. Mirrors... I'm not sure. It seems to hog a lot of resources from both. I leave it off.
  12. All of my joystick, controller, and mouse commands under CONTROLS are now highlighted in red because the commands are somehow duplicated (ex. VIEW CENTER displays the command as JOY_BTN5 + JOY_BTN5). The only extraordinary thing I did since this happened is I pressed MAKE HTML so I could look at my commands outside of the game. Now, I have to go through each command one by one, clear and bind it. Can someone please tell me why this happened so I can avoid this in the future?! By the way, I'll be saving my profiles for now on! EDIT: I'll also add that many of my commands were also completely deleted in this too, especially my HOTAS commands. Argggh!
  13. On shutting down the aircraft, if I switch off the MAIN and WING fuel pumps while the engines are running, why don't the engines shut off? Are these dummy switches or is there a real-world mechanism I'm not understanding? Thanks!
  14. Okay, here's what fixed it: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=100838 Essentially, I just needed to delete my DCS temp files in my User/AppData/ folder.
  15. Just updated to 1.2.4 and I can enter and navigate the main menu and mission editor, but when I start a mission, the program closes and nothing happens. No error messages appear and the program disappears from Task Manager. I've tried deleting local saved files, but that didn't work. DCS World 1.2.2 worked perfectly fine before updating. I was hoping someone had a solution before I go ahead and do a clean install. (I apologize if this topic has already been discussed. I didn't see any threads that matched my issue.)
