  1. The folda gap would be fun. I'm personally happy with Afghanistan so I can relive my early 20's. But variety certainly never killed anyone.
  2. I'm not certain, but perhaps because there have been no major air operations in modern times (80s onward) in those places that trump Afghanistan/Iraq? If you're only looking for cool looking places to fly (many here would say boring), Kola and South Atlantic will be up your alley. Or go tool around MSFS until you want to put a 2000lb JDAM on an IED-maker's compound.
  3. @NineLine @BIGNEWY I spent a year in and out of Fob Griffin on the Southwest side side of Maimana. If you would like assistance in replicating it, shoot me a DM. Also, the PRT (Provincial Reconstruction Team) base on the Northeast side of town had a short runway. The 1st Cav blackhawks were there when I was so you might be able to see of one of those guys could help. I only ever cared about the chow hall, hospital, and turf soccer pitch so I forget when the rest looked like.
  4. I THINK i read there's some serious distortion with them that maybe they're trying to fix?
  5. Going to be tough. At some point, you get significant diminishing returns. I'm running a Q3 with everything in cockpit maxed out both in-game and headset. It's easily legible but not perfectly crisp. I still use the vr zoom extensively. You may want to posit your question in the VR subfirum to get some more ideas. However your "max clarity" is only going to be so high, and I'd venture a guess that it still might not be good enough. Things that help: Quadview foveated rendering (fixed, of course). Supersampling in your headset (virtual desktop makes this very easy) Running standalone so steamvr isn't eating resources. Community mods for VR MPD clarity, specific to F18. Edit: Looks like mods moved it I to VR, thanks!
  6. Just read the update where HB explained the delay and some of the HBUI features. It got me thinking; apart from the Jester functionality, perhaps HB might consider a standalone tool with some of the functionality? I know Openkneeboard hits many of these marks, but there are some shortcomings I'd love to see filled. Just a thought.
  7. It's the "thrust" axis. There's one fir left, right, but you want the both bind.
  8. Ugly load out meaning asymmetric load out which is common in the f18 for several reasons. https://www.youtube.com/live/YmiVxj5Gt3Q?si=DMHPlXNDJ1EzTP9h
  9. Hmm, probably not, but next time you look externally, check for ugly. I think you said it's always pulling the same direction regardless of your heading so you can rule out wind Because dcs will auto-assign axes to controllers. For example. My rudder always has an assignment for the pitch axis when setting it up with new keybind profiles. Should also do the rudder.
  10. Be safe, do both! Start with the joystick software then do dcs
  11. Running ugly loadout? Crosswind? When's the last time you recalibrated your joystick? I find, since I turn off my USB hub when not in use, that my joystick center position wanders a bit over time. This is always an annoying culperate. Spent hours trying to fix it once only to find out that just having an Xbox one controller plugged in was adding input.
  12. Are you using Steam or WMR?
  13. You'll bottleneck your CPU if you don't upgrade that too.
  14. Wow, those settings are quite ambitious for your setup. Since you asked what you should buy, I'll provide some input below. I haven't played dcs without VR in a LONG time, so I'll try to take that into account. I'd recommend for 2d, a minimum of a 2080ti, ryzen 5800x3d (this is likely a bit much for the GPU, but more on that in a sec), 32gb of decent ram. You'll likely get good fps with medium to medium-high settings. You can absolutely get away with less, but I'm a sucker for the beautiful aesthetics and want to pump as much I to my eyes as possible. You might not care as much about some things. If you have extra scratch, move up to a 3080ti. If you play multiplayer or very high asset volume missions, then go for 64gb ram. Not necessary, but I do know it made a tangible difference for me. It's pretty tough to know what is best for YOU, so I recommend using the search function here with a few different search phrases to see non-anecdotal numbers and settings from other people's rigs. And search for dcs graphical comparisons on YouTube to see what settings are a personal must, and what's just nice to have - again, FOR YOU. DCS is one of those "games" where it's as much about the flying/combat as it is to extract every drop of performance from our rigs. That means there should be no shortage of information to help you in your never ending endeavor. Good luck!
  15. My 8 year old believes the Hellcat is better because it wasn't as hard to land on a carrier. His belief was that both can fly, shoot bad guys down, and protect America, but thought it was silly that the Corsair couldn't do exactly what it was designed for (thanks to my engineer wife). The fact that the British figured out how to land it on a carrier reliably didn't sway him. Dang it, I can't disagree with that logic! FYI: He likes the Corsair more since we watch Black Sheep Squadron on Saturday mornings. Mind you, he's not a genius. Just loves planes and WWII stories.
  16. Post this in the VR thread and you'll get better answers.
  17. Why is this in the squadron recruiting forum? You'd likely get better response if it were in the appropriate sub forum...
  18. Don't want to hijack the thread but it seems there's a resolution already here and don't want to add yet another F18 Kneeboard thread... Does the pilot model kneeboard pull from your Saved Games/KNEEBOARD documents as well? Or, do I need to put them in the actual DCS directory?
  19. I'm only asking because I'm finding it difficult how it works in conjunction with hand tracking, since in DCS, I didn't know the virtual hand acted as a mouse pointer where you would only need to map mouse clicks.
  20. Any appetite to post a quick video of it in action? I'm very happy with my PointCTRL but my dad is getting back into DCS and I'd like to give him something like this instead of waiting months for PointCTRL.
  21. Sorry, I should have clarified. I was more speaking to the one sentence in your previous post: "For VD you need to make sure you use a dedicated router." I don't have such a thing and it works as expected for me. I also don't have a crazy network speed, and have plenty of internal wifi traffic (wife/kids). I saw a few dedicated routers as I was waiting for my Q3 to arrive and debated on getting one just in case, but decided since (as you mentioned) Amazon has plenty that could be at my door same/next day, I ended up playing the "wait and see" if I need it strategy. Naturally, I didn't need to upgrade anything network related. Just make sure you're on the 5g network.
  22. While this may be true for your experience, I don't believe it's the majority of user experience with VD. Perhaps my Nighthawk Wifi 5-GHz router is special, but I doubt it. I'm pushing VD with the godlike setting and 500Mbps in the Oculus debug tool with zero issues. Honestly, I felt it was easier to run DCS/MSFS/IL2 on the Q3 with VD than it was for my Index (okay, maybe it was because Steam is dog doodoo for maximizing performance). Much like many other good things in life, you have to put in the effort to experience the benefits. VR is no different.
  23. Only issue I ever had was air link never sent the audio to the headset. Luckily I never had to fix it or care much since I discovered Virtual Desktop very shortly after and haven't looked back. Other nice thing about VD is their supersampling options are very easy. With any VR headset, the amount of issues you can run into are in the millions, since there's so much tinkering one normally does that could break something or give shimmering, stuttering, artifacts, blurriness, on and on and on and on.
  24. Also worth noting that you're probably GPU bottlenecked with the 7800x3d. I've found that it's a pretty even match for the 4090 so anything "less" (no insult intended) will not use the 7800x3d to the max. But as others have said, since multithreading isn't "all-threading", you might even be running 7800x3d to it's maximum utilization that DCS can use.
  25. You're limited base on your price range. If you swear off any Meta products, which Q3 is likely the best of what you'll get under $1k, then it's Pico 4 or wait. That's it. /thread If you can wait to muster $1k then find a used Aero, or Pimax Crystal (for a few hundred more), or bite the bullet and get the Big screen Beyond headset. The BB headset will use your current base stations but you will be the only user because it's custom tailored to your face. I hate Meta as much as the next guy. In fact, I have ZERO social media accounts. But I have the Q3 because my family enjoys their games, and it works extremely well on DCS. MFD text clarity is as I would want it, performance isn't as taxing as the Crystal. And to he honest, at this point I don't feel like I'm missing anything I need by not spending the extra $500. $500 can go a very long way in upgrading a CPU/GPU which has much more impact than the headset itself. Just my $0.02.....
