  1. My wife also always refers to me "flying", whenever I'm in my man cave, on my PC, even if it's not playing DCS World 😄

Virtual flying has definitely had a big impact on my motor skills and spacial awareness (especially in VR). Just before Covid times, I started gliding (soaring) at a local club and the instructors remarked that I had an intuitive feel and learned very quickly. I made my first solo flights very early, after only 30 or so starts, which is no time at all, considering most flights were only 10 to 15 minutes long.

Very unfortunately, only a couple of weeks after my first solo flight, a member of the gliding the club suffered a deadly crash. I couple of weeks later, I did get in the cockpit again, for another solo flight and I had a lot of respect for what I was doing, to put it mildly. The season ended and Covid came along, and I'm not afraid to admit that it also was a welcome excuse to take a break from the sport.

Flying is not to be taken lightly and given my limited RL experience, in the end I was very conscious of any bad habits I may have formed, for the sake of my own mortality.

I'm quite happy to do my flying virtually for the time being 🙂

  2. What would you call a speculative hi-fi A-10A module then?

Please don't say you'll never so one or rule it out :D

I like to think that if the A-10C can get an avionics upgrade, it can also can an avionics downgrade. This might seem silly to some, but I'd love to fly around in an authentic 80s era camouflaged A-10A, with all the challenges that come with it.

  3. The "II" is literally in the official name. A bit of a missed opportunity perhaps?

The "Tank Killer" name is nice and nostalgic, but maybe it would have been much better applied to a high fidelity fully clickable A-10A (which I sincerely hope we get as well one day).

Would be more fitting too, since the A-10A was originally specifically designed as a tank killer and it would fit the 70s, 80s cold war and 1990 Desert Storm scenarios.

By contrast, the modern day A-10C is primarily used as a CAS aircraft and less a tank killer.

  4. Very little Pimax news at the moment... Surprised to see this thread slipped down.

I received my Pimax 8KX yesterday, which I bought via the Kickstarter backer upgrade program.

Pretty happy with it so far. Very nice upgrade in clarity over the 5K Plus. Cockpit elements are much, much easier to see now.

Performance wise, I haven't noticed much of a difference at all, which is great. I had the 5k plus running at higher pixels anyway, and the visual results with the same settings on the 8KX are much better, given the higher resolution panels.

The new headstrap is also a great improvement, but not perfect for me personally. The bridge of my nose still pushes against the edge of the lenses, meaning I probably need a thicker cushion. Also, perhaps my head is too small, because the sides of the cushion don't quite contour to the side of my head, which lets a slight bit of light in the sides. I rectified these problems somewhat by removing the cushion and scrunching it a little tighter.

Also, the deluxe headphones weren't delivered yet. There is integrated audio in the headstrap in the form of speakers near the ears. Sound quality is OK but seems off, somehow far away and dampened, which is to be expected. This solution has the advantage/disadvantage of being able to hear the wife calling, but I can also clearly hear the vibrations of my Jetseat, which is annoying.

So all in all, not 100% perfect, but a very good headset nonetheless, which I will happily use, replacing my 5K Plus.

  5. My two cents on the whole DCS voice vs SRS debate are that very few online players will use DCS voice until it approaches the basic functionality of SRS anyway. Many online servers disable DCS voice because its not and it causes additional problems.

Sure, but they need to start somewhere and the alternative shouldn't be not to continue developing it.

  6. The Voice Chat feature is not planned to be suspended.

    Good :)

SRS, as good as it is, is still a workaround that requires extra installation, server connection and ultimately more effort on the part of the user.

Users who are not on SRS don't hear what is said on certain frequencies, even though realistically, they should be hearing what is said.

Also, many servers use weird combinations of SRS, Teamspeak, Discord etc.

In fact, radios can be seen to have "incomplete" functionality in DCS, as the most they can do is relay canned AI comms and don't really function as a real life radio.

So I'm really glad we're getting native radio functionality.

Thanks for the work that you do!

  7. A reason why they wouldn’t do eastern? How about their first few games being called Flanker. How about them being based in Russia and Belarus. How about the neglect these eastern planes already have.

The lack of eastern aircraft isn't a coinicidence and it's not due to neglect either. We'd all love more eastern aircraft and a full systems Flanker and personally, I think it would probably sell even better than an F-15C.

However, unfortunately there are some buerocratic hurdles that make this difficult, and that's why most deem it quite unlikely.

  8. I've had a 5k+ for almost a year now and I've been very happy with it. Yes, it's not perfect, but the great resolution and large FOV was worth it in my eyes. The shortcomings were mainly in comfort, which I solved by modding the facepad and adding a vive deluxe audio headstrap with 3d printed parts. Performance has improved greatly since release, with improvements to pitool (as well as improvements on DCS side I'm sure).

The 8kx seems to have resolved the comfort issues nicely, with improvements to visual quality, so I took the plunge and ordered the 8kx through the upgrade program.

  9. The helicopter damage models have been broken for many years.

I was very annoyed with it a few years ago, when in the Ka-50 campaign, I would fail to down Mi-24s with a difficult Vikhr shot, only to be subsequently killed by said Mi-24.

I made a bug report and provided tracks in test conditions, shooting at hovering helicopters, some needing two or more Vikhrs to go down.

Seems not much has changed on this front.

  10. Honestly, I think even early stage 1 implementation will be extremely useful and great for the community and the whole dynamic of multiplayer servers.

Even with SRS enabled, I've often had no one else using it.

The integrated VOIP allows even more passive players to listen in and coordinate with others.

  11. It's a shame they almost always go for this kind of over the top action these days. It's just desensitizing.

I loved the aerial sequences in Dunkirk for their realness and simplicity.

But even with CGI you could make something look more realistic and grounded.

I am so glad hat for Top Gun Maverick, they have opted to go for all real footage.

  12. For me, the multiplayer part of this problem is on the server admins. And on people who still hand onto the completely outdated idea that aircraft x hast o be "blue" at all cost and aircraft "y" has to be red.

That bluefor redfor stuff is pretty much dead by now. We have nations operating both western and eastern aircraft, NATO migs, a very open export market on both sides and the chance for a great "red" vs "blue" war is basicly 0.

For pvp multiplayer there is nothing wrong to equal out the playing field by simply putting the same aircraft type on both sides.

Looking at the JF-17 for example, a lot of people are happy because it is a "red" aircraft. Thats just bs, because it is currently operated by a nation that also used the viper a "blue" aircraft. You see where I am going here....

For public pvp multiplayer, to make it balanced and fun for everyone just get rid of the red vs blue at all costs thinking.

That got really annoying before the viper came out, I still have nightmares from the usual 20+ hornets +3 F15s with 120cs vs 2 mirage a 29s and 2 SU-27 situations that resulted from the "red vs blue" mindset.

DCS is a sandbox and everyone is basicly free to do whatever he or she wants. There is nothing wrong with roleplaying "realistic" scenarios and nothing wrong with having fun blowing shit up. Thats the beauty of DCS, we are able to use the game however we want.

What are you talking about? Most of the more popular servers do just that and just put a bunch of the same aircraft on each side. And honestly, it's bland and boring as hell.

  13. I absolutely love DCS. I'm so happy that it exists and it has so many parts that are absolutely amazing.

At the same time, I have to agree with all that is said in the video. It really echoes all the frustrations I have had with DCS over the years.

I really really hope the management and devs take these constructive criticisms very seriously rather than try to make excuses for the way things are - Ultimately for the betterment of the product as a whole.

The flight sim world will be shook up next year (by a product I won't name for fear of getting banned), and even though it's not in direct competition, if it lives up to the hype, it may lead to frustrated players spending less time with DCS and more time with it.
