Mig-21 has something that Sabre does not: A manual!

Russian style Stick : Defender Cobra M5 USB
gerd replied to PeterP's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The news about the 3rd generation of m5 are disturbing, but are there any *practical* negative effects for a person who would like to buy the stick as a boxed product without the need for expanding the stick with more buttons, etc? I mean, will we see spiking like with the potentiometer sticks? Is the resolution of axes drastically scaled down? -
No, I do not have FC3 (and I do not have any standalone planes from FC3), so I can see grayed out icons of FC3, A-10A, F-15, Su-25, but no Su-27. There is no arrow on either side of the screen.
-
I was wondering in the past whether we will get some way to manage the module icons on the main screen - negative answer from ED. As the line of modules at the bottom of the screen was growing and growing, with the addition of Mig-21 in 1.2.10 it got to the point it could not hold any more modules. What now? After the update to 1.2.11, no icon of Su-27 module appeared. I suppose it is due to the line of icons having no more space. Once again, Is there a plan to have the icons managed by users? Or at lease split it into several rows (simple FC3 aircrafts / complex modules)?

Recommended Reading on USAF-operated MiG-21s - 'Red Eagles'
gerd replied to britgliderpilot's topic in MiG-21Bis
Interesting, thanks for the tip. On a similar note, to get into the mood, would you recommend a book from the other side? Meaning something like a memoirs/first fand experience of eastern-block Mig 21 pilots? Could not find any - all is just technical books about the plane itself, but no pilot experience. -
@abaile: yes, that was my question: you have instrument lighting both in Dora and Mustang, but in Dora it shines only when in dark, while in Mustang it is visible also in direct sunshine. Is that because of different technology (fluorescence vs backlighting) or is it game related (developed for newer modules like Dora/Mi-21 and hopefuly backported to older planes like Mustang).
-
I have finally got to trying Dora and one thing I have immediately noticed is the strong fluorescent lightning of gauges (can be toned down by a knob). More interesting thing is that the gauges shine green only when they are in the shadow - not if they are on a direct sunlight. This effect is not present in P-51. Is it because of different (real-life) technology behind the gauges, or is it just a thing that was developed recently (in DCS) an therefore will be implemented to P-51 later?

One huge difference: in FSX you "just" fly. In DCS combat scenario different FM/DM behaviour with the same plane might make huge difference.
-
For example, if ED made their version AFM+SSM and Virtual Patriots EFM(at PFM level)+ASM, I am definitely buying the Patriots version.
-
I am happy for this simple matrix off rewards, but I would suggest to reuse the award selection under the profile and let people choose their plane. As a 30$ backer I will get P-51, which I already have and also everyone else I know. I would prefer any other plane than P-51 and the selector in the profile would allow just that.

Cannot switch to Right or Left Gunner Position 1.2.8
gerd replied to thinkr's topic in Missions and Campaigns
Yes. It is a problem of this specific mission. You need to open it in Mission Editor and add the Gunners. After saving, everything will play as expected. -
Quick question: In the new file selector screen for missions, how do I switch to another drive? Currently it looks into my User folder on C:\, but my missions reside on E:\

Dear Santa, I was a good boy all year long, so would appretiate DCS Ka-50 Blackshark 2 That would be my first taste of russian tecnology - for some reason all my modules so far model US aircrafts.

DCS Transfer to dedicated SSD from C Drive
gerd replied to NatoBoomerang's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well, it might be connected to the other speed improvement I read about - that is it beneficial to reinstall DCS from time to time using the latest version as the patching from version to version could leave some unwanted slow-down efects... Actually I could report in about two weeks, provided everything goes well with my SSD purchase. 1) I will measure performance of my current install on HDD (version 1.2.3 patched to the latest 1.2.6) 2) I will move this installation to the new SSD and measure the performance again (Copy&Paste as mentioned in this thread before) 3) I will uninstall my patched DCS from SSD and install directly 1.2.6 to SSD That should give us the answers. However, I am a bit concerned about the last step - uninstalling and installing again - will I lose one de/activation of A10, P51 and UH-1 ? Should I deactivate the modules beforehand, or should simply uninstall / install and pray it does not ask about activation? -
DCS Transfer to dedicated SSD from C Drive
gerd replied to NatoBoomerang's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Faster load times and should remove sturrering when some new textures / sounds / parts of the map should be loaded during the game. At least that is what I am hoping for - I already have Windows on a 64 GB SSD and I am planning to buy another one (probably Intel 530 / 240 GB) to move the games from the slow HDD. -
Thanks guys for the encouragement, I will give it a try! @xxJohnxx: According to wikipedia only 10pcs were built so I do not blame you you have not flown one - and this is my greatest concern - how can we know our BS handles like the real thing when there is not much reference. @sobek: I did not say I can handle huey, I said it is fun to fly :-) @Pizzicato: good read there, but no statement "this is modelled exactly as in real life" - of course you can use the best equations to simulate the environment, but without some hard data about what you are simulating... (take the F-35 example - it has not been fully introduced yet, but people are already building sims...).
-
I've never been a helio fan, but got the huey in the last sale and had so much fun with it that I am considering adding Ka50 to my stable. That leads me to a question though. How plausible is the Ka50 modeling of the systems and the flight dynamics itself? I mean, it is quite new technology compared to huey, so the data might be classified, no? I do not want to fly any fan-fiction fantasy...
-
That is most unfortunate. I guess I will eventualy waste most of the points on 3) and 4), since 1) and 2) are only one-time operations. On the other hand, after I deplete all the activations, I will still have one (recharging every month), right? 1 activation = 12 points = 4 HDD changes, that should be enough per month.

Hallo, The manual states that after certain amount of changes in the computer one needs to rectivacte the product - change of HDD is for 3 points. As I habe several HDDs, I would like to know which actions do have an impact on the score: 1) exchange of system HDD (the one with windows - consider cloning to SSD) 2) exchange of HDD with DCS installation (I keep it on separate drive for better speed - consider cloning this to 7200 rpm drive from this shitty WD Green) 3) addition/removal of another HDD with data (unrelated to windows or DSC - from time to time friends give me their hdd with raw video und I make clips for them) 3a) in case 3) impacts the score, does every addition / removal count, or if I keep using e.g. set of 3 HDDs from 3 friends, I will lose 3x3 points initially, but then as the HDDs are known to the system, no further points will be charged for subsequent swapping? 4) mounting virtual image of a HDD (sometimes my work requires me to mount an image of a production computer and get some data from it) I understand 1) will probably charge the points, but what about the other cases?

I have just joined the Huey club. Spent 2 hours hovering (well, more like skiding) around the airfield today and I have to say I love it. Thank you Belsimtek!

As I have no intention to use steam on my myin computer, I was thinking about using some older computer to install steam just to purchase the titles and use only the serials in plain DCS World. Does that mean that I will lose one activation by transferring the serial from the temporary "steam" computer to my gaming rig?
