They don't. I think you're right, the mask is worn more as a precaution than anything else. You can see videos on youtube with people flying in military jets (Prowlers, Hornets) with their mask taken off.

If I can remember correctly I did try to push the squelch button but it wouldn't work. Squelch wouldn't turn on. Really not sure what's happening here. I later launched another flight, tuned to the same ADF beacon, switched the ADF switch but didn't have to turn the squelch back on or anything. The static noise simply did not show up at all.

No actually when you start cold and dark OBOGS switch is already off. Only turning down the flow knob makes you pass out.

I think I did try that and also changing the frequency on both radios but the static just woudn't go away. I loaded up another flight a few minutes later, tried to tune to the same nav beacon and it worked well that time which suggests it might indeed be a bug.

When starting on the ramp with a cold and dark aircraft, with the canopy open, turning the oxygen flow knob down makes us hypoxic. This should not happen as we're sitting on the ground and don't need any oxygen supply through the mask. Now let's admit we can get hypoxic on the ground. The strange thing is: the issue always appears when turning the flow knob down even when the OBOGS switch was already on the OFF position at the start of the mission. Today after tuning my radio to a nav beacon frequency I got a permanent static noise which was impossible to get rid of. It's not the first time that it happens and it definitely seems to be a bug. Flaps should be set to half, be it for a field or carrier take off. This will solve your problem.

I'm sure we'll get it eventually. Rain effect has only been out since last Wednesday and is still in Open Beta. We can't expect everything to be ready overnight.
