  1. The mod still works fine for me. The clouds look a bit strange in VR, almost like they aren't in focus when you get close to them (stereoscopic issue maybe like the same perspective of the clouds going to both eyes?). It's definitely not because of the mod, lots of users on Reddit voicing complaints. If you toggle the shader on and off the clouds are still pretty undefined, but I do think the shader exasperates the apparent effect since with it engaged everything BUT the clouds looks sharp and clear. Yes, it only works in SteamVR. So you need to download Steam + SteamVR if you don't already have it. Then you can use Skatezilla's DCS launcher tool or shortcut commands (I think there's a post somewhere in this thread that shows exactly the command you need) to force DCS to run with SteamVR.
  2. It's very unlikely 2.7 would break this mod unless ED makes significant changes to how the rendering pipeline works.
  3. Just tried this out last night and it's pretty incredible! The colors look so much better and the sharpness is definitely a big improvement. The clarity enhancement was enough that I've now turned my resolution down a bit (from 100% to 85% with my G2) to increase performance. It doesn't quite look as clear as native 100% resolution but it's a worthy tradeoff to me -- still far better looking than 85% resolution without the shader. I wasn't expecting the colors to look so much better too -- it's like an artificial haze has been removed and the muted tones are now vibrant without looking like oversaturated crappy HDR. Note for Oculus users: if you happen to have a Quest 1 or Quest 2, I think you could still use this mod if you're using the Virtual Desktop app (you can find it on App Lab) since it utilizes SteamVR. Of course there are some tradeoffs like a bit of latency (not super noticeable IMO but it depends heavily on your networking setup) and the streaming compression (but I think it looks pretty good with the bitrate maxed out). Also I believe neither motion smoothing nor ASW work with it but that may have only applied to previous versions. You also can't tweak the resolution granularly, there are 3 options only in the Virtual Desktop settings (changing the SteamVR resolution does nothing). Disclaimer: now that I have a G2 I only use the Quest 2/Virtual Desktop for shooters so it's been a while since I've fired up DCS with it so YMMV.
  4. I have noticed that my IPD is seemingly not ideal for the Rift S's fixed lens positions, which isn't surprising since I'm a pretty small person. The software IPD adjustment seems to only affect the scale of 3D objects, so that's not really a solution. I haven't measured my IPD yet but I have 20/20 uncorrected vision both near and far. If I'm in the sweet spot for one lens, the other one is blurry -- and if I try to shift the headset to fix that, the other one becomes the blurry one. So I'm almost certain this is simply a matter of IPD. I was thinking of selling/trading my Rift S for a Quest (with Link cable) since it has manually adjustable lens distance. I figured the slightly higher resolution of the Quest would be nice too, but I seem to be finding some comments indicating that the overall visual quality is worse on the Quest. However, I get the feeling that the improvement from the proper lens alignment would outweigh that overall. Any thoughts on switching to the Quest for this purpose? Btw I'm not too concerned about the lower refresh rate, I usually run DCS in ASW 45 FPS mode.
  5. Does FC3 also include the AFM for the A-10A, or is that only for the module version? On that note, if the F-15C gets an AFM, will FC3 be updated for that?
  6. We haven't talked much about price yet, but he's a really close friend and I know he'll give me a good deal, and he'll let me pay him in installments too. I'm not really too worried about price just yet, I just wanna know if it's a good system in general for DCS.
  7. I might be buying my friend's build from about a year and a half ago. How would this hold up for DCS, specifically A-10C? CPU: AMD FX 6100 Six-core processor, 3.30 GHz, OCd to 4.2 GHz Motherboard: HP H8-1214 Memory: 10gb DDR3-1600 (4x4x2) Video card: AMD Radeon 7870 Sapphire PSU: Seasonic 660w Platinum Plus Windows 8 (I wouldn't be opposed to getting Windows 7 and installing it instead if there are compatibility issues with Windows 8 ) He doesn't remember the specs on the HD other than it being 1.5 TB, but I'm interested in getting a SSD and reinstalling Windows and DCS on it if it makes a big improvement.
  8. Hey guys. I don't post much here, but I'm definitely still an aviation nut. I got a really awesome opportunity this past weekend and I wanted to share it with everyone. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to take a flight in a Nanchang CJ-6. Since I am an aviation enthusiast, I wanted to film it. It was an amazing experience. We did some aerobatics, and I got to take control of the aircraft a few times. Yeah, it's a pretty long video, but I wanted to share a lot of the experience. It was filmed with a GoPro HERO3. It was filmed in 1080p, so watch it in HD!
  9. Still relevant since FC2 runs as my original post described. :smilewink: Basically I assumed that since FC2 is simpler (in about every way conceivable), and had been out for quite a while at the time of DCS: A-10C's release, the LAST thing I was expecting was for DCS: A-10C to actually run better than FC2 in any way. It honestly didn't seem logical to me that DCS: A-10C would be running better than it, no matter how many updates there had been (since there have been plenty for FC2 but the performance never seemed to improve much for me), but hey, I'm pleasantly surprised. Besides, I was posting from work and I couldn't give the sims a try at the time, but was still curious (and antsy).
  10. Thanks for all the tips, guys! Admittedly I haven't tried them yet, I just fired up the sims for the first time in over a year today. But I'll definitely have to go through the tips and threads mentioned and tweak things a bit. Anyway, I'm pleasantly surprised. Last time I played DCS: A-10C was shortly after the final version was released (late 2010) on the same PC. It had the problems that I was describing (framerate seemed smooth overall, but stutters every once in a while). But running the current version in DCS World seems to have great results! I have the settings about the same as I used to (as far as I can remember), and now the framerate seems even better than before and the stutters seem to be completely gone (unless I enable HDR, but I don't really care for it anyway). I guess a lot of optimizing has been done. I also decided to try out Flaming Cliffs 2 again. Using similar settings to DCS: A-10C, it seems to run the way I had remembered from before (what I described in my first post). However, the stutters aren't necessarily at intervals like I had previously thought. It seems that they happen (for 1/4 of a second or so) whenever I fire a weapon and whenever something happens on the radio. Also of note is the fact that as soon as I enter the cockpit, if I pan my head to the sides, the framerate will slow down and seem to stutter for a second or so when I look to each side the first time (then it seems fine after that). I remember DCS: A-10C doing that before, but now it doesn't (now it's smooth as ever, even the first time I pan my view around after entering the cockpit). I'm wondering if maybe these stutters in FC2 are caused by some types of data not being preloaded during the loading screen, but instead the engine is loading them right as they happen in the game, whereas perhaps in DCS: A-10C it loads more stuff during the loading screen. Does that sound plausible? Anyway, I'm still very excited to see the DCS: A-10C is working much better than it did before. I hope FC3 gets optimized for that kind of performance as well! EDIT: I should note that I've only tried Instant Action and Training so far, and I know the Campaign and Multiplayer missions are going to load a lot more things and use more resources.
  11. I made this today. Was thinking about the P-51 and couldn't resist.
  12. Hi everyone, I haven't simmed in quite a while but all the news about DCS World and such is getting me a little antsy and I'm thinking about possibly getting back into it a bit. I haven't played DCS: A-10C since shortly after the final version was released, but I remember having an issue with stuttering. My overall framerate felt very smooth, but every 4-5 seconds or so, I'd have a stutter where the game would freeze (although the sound still continued fine) for maybe 1/4-1/2 of a second or so. I'm thinking that perhaps it was accessing data from the hard drive for terrain and that was causing the stutter, but feel free to correct me if that's not what was causing it. I want to upgrade my computer to fix that problem, and I'm thinking that perhaps a SSD would be the way to go. But if the problem is something else, I'd be glad to update whatever is needed. Here's my computer specs: -Case: NZXT Gamma Gaming Case - Black -iBUYPOWER Labs - Internal Expansion [6-Port] NZXT Internal USB Expansion System -Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 950 Processor (4x 3.06GHz/8MB L3 Cache) -Processor Cooling: Liquid CPU Cooling System [sOCKET-1366] --- Standard 120mm Fan -Memory: 6 GB [2 GB X3] DDR3-1600 - Corsair -Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 - 2GB -Motherboard: ASUS P6T SE -Motherboard USB / SATA Interface: Internal USB 3.0 PCI-E x1 Expansion Card -Power Supply: 750 Watt -- Corsair CMPSU-750TX -Primary Hard Drive: 1 TB HARD DRIVE -- 16M Cache, 7200 RPM, 3.0Gb/s - Single Drive* -Optical Drive 24X Dual Format/Double Layer DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive - Black -Sound Card 3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard -Network Card Onboard LAN Network (Gb or 10/100) Any suggestions on what I could do to get better performance and stop the stuttering? Once again, the framerate feels absolutely fine and the stutters feel like a very different incident than the GPU or CPU getting bogged down. They're pretty far apart (4-5 seconds between them).
  13. Forgive me if this has been answered countless times before, but I've been out of the loop for a REALLY long time. Will FC2 be able to be integrated with DCS World (ie: so that the DCS planes can fly online in the same servers where players are also flying FC2 planes), or this something that will only happen with FC3 (once it is released)?
  14. Here are the pictures: Suncom Talon and RockFire Gameport to USB adapter: TrackIR 3: CH Pro Pedals:
  15. Hey guys, I just bought some used gear recently, hoping to get back into simming...but some financial burdens have come up and I'd really be better off selling it. There's not a ton, but it's some good stuff. -Suncom Talon joystick - $60 plus shipping Great condition for its age. If you're not familiar with these, they were made in the mid 90s and use a gameport connection. However, Windows recognizes it with a gameport to USB adapter, which I will include. If you get the Suncom SFS throttle, you can connect your keyboard to it and connect it to the joystick, and then all the buttoms are programmable based on keyboard commands. Unfortunately I don't have the throttle though, but you can still use the joystick's buttons without the throttle in DirectX mode. -CH Pro Pedals USB - $65 plus shipping Great condition. Includes original box and packaging, plus "Discover United States of America" and "Discover Europe" flight sims. -NaturalPoint TrackIR 3 - $50 plus shipping Great condition. Includes TrackIR hat and sheet of reflectors (just one missing). Also includes the Vector expansion, but I just bought all of this a few weeks ago and the seller has not returned my messages asking for the serial to activate the Vector mode, so no guarantees on that. Will update with pictures soon.
  16. Anyone got one of these available? I used to have the boxed crate set in the 90's and it was awesome. Now I have a Talon stick but no throttle, so I'd love to buy just the throttle. Thanks!
  17. Hmm, that makes sense. The pilot flying the jet before I sat in it must have been really short. I'm just a little over 5'7" and I felt like I was sitting way above the in-game level.
  18. I agree. I've had the opportunity to sit in a real A-10C before and although it was brief, I felt like my viewpoint was much higher than what's useable in DCS. When I raise the seat that far in the game, I can barely see any of the HUD symbology.
  19. I'd love to come to one of these sometime. I live in San Marcos but I'll be graduating college in August and I'm not sure where I'll end up, but I don't mind a drive anyway.
  20. I have a pretty decent subwoofer which I have placed directly beneath my chair (and will soon have a ButtKicker too!), and with it cranked up a fair bit, the gun sounds perfect!
  21. I got to watch A-10s strafe targets and drop unguided bombs at that same range, when I was on a PDT summer trip (staying at Davis Monthan AFB for a month) when I used to be an ROTC cadet. Awesome stuff.
  22. Does anyone have any super cheap ideas for ways of mounting my HOTAS? I am thinking of two cheap but sturdy (40-50 lbs) chests of drawers (about 2 feet tall) from IKEA and placing them next to each side of my (armless) office chair, and then using some industrial strength velcro to attach the stick and throttle to them. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd really appreciate some insight. I'm looking for cheap and easy, and minimal building. Doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. :joystick:
  23. Looks like the Falcon 4 engine to me. With a custom model and some photoshop effects. Look at the third picture down...that terrain definitely looks like Falcon to me, spruced up with a bit of photoshopping. If the terrain is indeed payware FSX scenery...it looks pretty crappy.
