  1. That was fun! The card box my Aero arrived in had now to be the  imposter of the central keyboard unit and the border of my desk had to act as the lower row of buttons on the MFDs. Worked quite well, lol. It will be a nice project for my holidays to implement a more permanent solution 🙂

For now another tip is to rest the arm against your legs or body while you manipulate controls with your virtual hand. I can not explain how this physical anchoring technique works exactly, but it gives a nice phantom sense and presence in the now less virtual environment 🙂

  2. Enhancing My VR Flight Sim Experience with Leap Motion on Varjo Aero

Introduction: I recently integrated the Leap Motion controller with my Varjo Aero, and I'm excited to share my experience and some helpful insights with the community.

Setup Challenges & Solutions: The first hurdle was the short USB cable that came with the Leap Motion. To fully utilize it with the HMD, a longer USB cable is essential. (USB 3.0 significantly improves tracking versus USB 2.0 tracking.)

F16 vs. F18 Experience: In my simulations, the Leap Motion truly shines in the F16 cockpit. The OpenXR touch points are more responsive and well-placed than in the F18. The side stick design in the F16 also makes accessing front controls easier, enhancing the experience.

Tracking Performance: OpenXR vs. Ultraleap: When it comes to tracking, I’ve found OpenXR tracking  (DCS VR Tab) to be superior to Ultraleap (DCS Special Tab) tracking, offering better touch points and fewer bugs.

Practical Usage: During flights, I primarily use hand tracking for front panel controls and MFDs. It's exceptionally immersive in the F16. For startup or side panel operations, I switch off VR hands with a HOTAS button and use a mouse positioned conveniently to my right.

Beyond Expectations: Initially skeptical, I've been pleasantly surprised by the Leap Motion. It's not just a novelty – it's an immersive addition to VR flying. It just amazing how easy and natural feeling it is, to push the MFD buttons with the virtual hand versus placing the mouse pointer over the button.

Your Thoughts? Have you tried a similar setup, or do you have tips to enhance the VR flight simulation experience? I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

  3. I ordered a leap motion for the fun of it. Which airplane works best for you guys?

I am not expecting a perfect solution right now (I have read about the existing limitations and problems). I just think it is a cool product I want to support this kind of development and experience it myself for the immersion.

  4. PC Specs:

    Windows 11
    4090 FE
    128 gb ram
    Ryzen 5950 x
    ASUS Darkhero VIII
    Reverb G2

    DCS settings:

    Running OB Multi Thread
    MSAA x2
    No up scaling
All settings high expect view distance - medium
    Motion Reprojection on - unlocked
FPS 45 fps to 30 fps.

Low level flight with Apache can be jittery - therefore, this request for advice!

What render resolution are you using for the G2? Try to reduce the render resolution.

  5. Dear Don,

Not a long time ago I had a few great meetings with my uncle. On our last meeting, after his more than 30 years battle with cancer, when we parted he said to me: "bis bald".

"Till soon",  Don, I am glad to have shared the time, the virtual space and our great hobby with you.

    Thank you Don.

  6. These settings also seem to improve the issue for me combined with my original vsync and fullscreen setting. (I also created a 90 refresh rate mode for my monitor).

(But perhaps it is not related at all and the issue is appearing different randomly on every run, the number of test runs is still low, I will update again after more test runs)

After further test runs, the settings seem not related

  7. problem:

I have the same flashing in the F15E only when the TPOD is on display.

    workaround:

I also have found a setting that solves this problem for me (I have 1 flash during a 15 min flight with vsync&fullscreen versus a flash every few seconds with vsync&fullscreen off).

Please report your results, do these settings reduce the flashing for you as well?

    next steps:

I suspect the vsync setting is the main contributer to reduce the flashing. I will test other combinations and modules and report my findings.

After further testing the flashing seems only related to TPOD on or off (TPOD video that is)

  8. 1500 < 2200

    (Aero + 2 Base Startions) < (4090)

4090 not necessary with Aero @ 45 FPS, that is the point

... And with all due respect an RTX 4090 outclasses an RTX 3080 when it comes to VR performance. ...

It should at double the price 😉 With a 4090 I could probably use high textures instead of medium. Else I would experience no difference at 45 FPS.

(Ok, increase the resolution a few percent as well 😉 )
