  1. It's been 2 weeks since Razbam's "announcement".  Mods are still saying essentially to stop posting, asking questions, or discussing Razbam's "strike".  How long exactly are customers supposed to wait before getting an update on what's happening?  If both sides haven't been able to "work things out" in 2 weeks, that doesn't exactly bode well for a rapid happy outcome IMO.  So, is it too much to ask to tell us where things are at so we can all get back to buying new EA products with confidence?  This is directed at Razbam, not ED, as Razbam were the ones that went public with this dispute, and the least they can do is not go comms silent after doing so.  It's not fair to their customers.

  2. Great info, thanks so much all.

Can you mess about then and get the FC3 F15C's MFDs to work?  I'm assuming no go on the UFC and middle/center panels of the MiP...

Can you get the various Su27 variants to work on the MFDs too then, even just "more or less"?

Looking more favorable for buying the MiP TopGun.  I have SO much Hotas, seriously, 40+ throttles and sticks going back to the CH days of the 90s, but I've never messed with a setup like the MiP, always just monitor(s) or VR, never any supplemental displays, MFDs, or control panels.  Other than the Virpil boxes, I have 2 of those, but they are mounted on Monster mounts/plates beside my throttles.  Be so nice to build a semi-custom "cockpit" on my large gaming table with the MiP, I just want to ensure it's value is there as I have all the modules, and plan on using lots of them in PVP online now that I'm healthy enough to begin simming again.

  3. I've searched through all the WinWing manuals, Youtube videos, and forums for the answer to my question - what modules are currently compatible with the MiP TopGun with the active MFDs?  What modules can you make "just sort of work", and etc.

I just want to know if it's worth getting this setup for my 2d DCS play, in terms of it being used on not just the F18C and F16C modules.

    Thanks all!

  4. Awesome, thanks to the both of you for your responses.  I found a like new condition Quest Pro for only $600 CDN which is less than 1/2, more like 40% before tax here in Canada, and also have a Quest 3 bnib (full retail price, no deals around yet, and I'm eager to try both Meta vs my Reverb G2.).  I'll wait for the next big "thing" like the Varjo Aero "was" to come out, and just use these lower cost of entry Meta products.  Can't wait to try them now....

Yes, I had the same issue with the Kuject and a cheaper ebay clone of it back when I was using one. Are you on the latest q3 software for headset and PC? it might help with reducing the need to restart.

I've since changed to a 4 port USB C hub and a USB-C to USB-C link cable (One of the 4 ports supports 22 watt 9v) With the Q3 v62 software, it seems to maintain about 80% of charge during gameplay though it used to get to 100% in older firmware. However, since the update I rarely need to unplug replug / restart anything to get it to detect the headset or charge correctly.

Meta appears to be tweaking the power requirements each update, making it a bit hard to predict how things will behave

Can you use Virtual Desktop as your DCS "mode" or whatever for VR, while using either of these cable options to maintain power for long play sessions?  That's my main concern with grabbing a Q3, playing time while in VD.   If so, love to know the name of the 4 slot USB-C hub and the USB-C to USB-C cable too.

I'm personally waiting for the Somnium to drop before moving away from my G2.

I love the look of the Bigscreen Beyond but need base stations in the mix. Valve is supposed to be revealing their new offering soon too.

I think the price of the Somnium will be a lot more $$$ than the Quest 3.  A LOT more.  But I, like you, may wait just to see how bad the damage is before I give up my G2 for a Facebook headset (Facebook/"Meta"....VOMIT, but what can you do right).

  7. Been out of the game for a while due to health/accident incidents which had me in the hospital for a long time, and then in and out of doctor/home care nursing/etc/blahblahblah.  Just getting to the point where I can begin simming again.  The Reverb G2 "second addition" or whatever was ruling the roost when I went down, and that's what I've got still.

Sounds like going with the QP over the Quest 3 might be a better option.  Question though - very, VERY confusing with all the terms and accronyms now on wtf I'm supposed to use with either Meta unit in terms of software/apps.  Also the cables and all this "virtual desktop" and "wireless connection" which doesn't sound very wireless when guys are talking about having to get some super/better cable in order to keep the Quest 3 charged for long gaming sessions.

Advice requested - should I grab a Quest 3 or Quest Pro, what cable should I get, what does it do, and how does it do it.  Also some of the terms regarding all the jargon, if someone could spell that out in 7 or 8 lines what means what, and what does what --- I'd SUPER appreciate it.

Many on the boards were mentioning  what a great deal the Varjo Aero is now.  It's still $1500 USD when you factor in the cost of 2 of the lighthouses @$240 each.  For me in Canada, that's $2000 CAD +++ before even getting to the taxes, shipping (ouch), and duty (more ouch).  $2090+ $230 tax +shipping + duty = $2400 landed easily for me.  So ya, for $625 and $1400 respectively for the Quest 3 and Quest Pro up here in Canada, compared to the well over two thousand Canadian for an Aero....

  8. Any of you with the Quest 3 in hand, noticed what the Youtube VR guy with the super annoying accent has, regarding dead pixels?  He said that he's gone through 6 Quest 3's already that have had pixels die.  He's very critical of Meta's QC here.

FWIW I think you have the right idea about AMD at the current time.

However, I am somewhat surprised to hear you're concerned about the 5800X3D beating a 7800X3D.  I'd be interested to hear more about that.

Also, just to be clear: The 5800X3D isn't AM5 - so that would address any concerns about future 'upgradability'.    You are correct in saying the AM5 has a future in front of it - but AM4 is already "maxed out" with a 5800X3D.  (I think you probably know this, but just to be sure).  So, I wouldn't be considering an AM4 platform if the intent is to do a total replacement.  Even if we assume 5800X3D is comparable to a 7800X3D, the latter has an upgrade path where the former does not.

    HTH

Hah, like I said I've been out of action a while, and I never did pay nearly as much attention to AMD as Intel, and I'd forgotten that the 5800 was AM4 and not AM5 compatible, so thanks for the reminder, and that makes things a little bit simpler now.

Comes down to now really the 7800X3D, 7900X3D or 7950X3D.  $ isn't really an issue, however I also don't want to spend extra $ on the 7950 or 7900 if their performance only shades the 7800 by 5 %, if you get my drift.  10%, ya, that'll be a decision I'll have to think about for a short bit, any more than that and I'll just buy the 7900 or 7950 x 2 of them.  But that's what I came here to ask, those of you who have been using AMD in DCS, what are "the numbers" between the 3 AM5 CPUs.

  10. I'm looking for advice on the best AMD cpu to get right now.  I've been out of the game a lot the last year with some health problems (shattered my right leg, high energy impact comminuted fracture of the right leg, 8 breaks total and broke the ankle in 2 spots), and it's been a real biatch dealing with it.  Now that I have a bit better handle on things, I'm back into the DCS swing of things.

Issue - I have always had 2 or 3 gaming systems in the home as there are multiple PC gamers around.  I do have a 13900k, but also 2 10900k systems I was planning on upgrading to the new 14900 or 700kfs today.  After seeing some of the early reviews, it looks like the 14XXX is a bust, so I figured in the interim I'd upgrade the 10900 systems to AMD.  I have 4090s (just the regular Asus TUF cards, the cheapest other than Zotac, but good enough) in both already.  Primary question - which of the X3D AMD chips should I buy?  I'm pretty certain on the AMD5 MBs and RAM, but picking which of the 5800, 7800, 7900, and 7950 X3D chips is difficult based on the 50 videos and reviews I've read.  It seems so game to game, some games the 5800X3D handily beats the 7950X3D.  Lots of WTF moments this AM.  So, which of these is best for DCS and DCS only, and by what kind of % in terms of FPS performance in VR? I have a Reverb G2 that's sat for a year, and will probably get either an Aero, or maybe even try out the new Occulus/Meta Quest3 and QuestPro as well.  I also play 2D, I have an LG 27" 4k and a new Alienware 34" OLED.

I'm sold on the AMD idea mainly due to the AMD5 platform still having a ton of life in it, so plunking in new CPUs that come out over the next couple years will be simpler than a complete tear out of the system and components on 2 of our systems.  I'd also like to know the DCS performance though and what I'm getting into with that, without reading through all the threads here.

    Thanks in advance.

  11. Coming back to DCS after being absent a while due to health problems.  Just looking for advice on what programs I need to run what with the new OpenXR/etc stuff (all new to me) with my setup.  G2 V2 for VR headset, 13900k/4090 on my machine I just upgraded.

Trying to find simple/new/correct info is frustrating right now.  What I'm looking for specifically is with openbeta stand alone DCS, what else should be running when I boot it with my; G2 plugged in.  Do I need Openxr tool kit, SteamVR, etc etc?

    Thanks in advance.

  12. Errr what?

So I can install another copy of DCS on another drive.  Then update that one (how?!).  Then how does one use DCS_LOCALSOURCE.txt, do you just type that somewhere or what?

Edit - I tried doing this, it just started moving my files from my original folder to the new one.  There really should be a simplified way of doing this.

I think I might just swap out to a 1tb drive I have sitting around and just re install it all.

Skatezilla, I've heard you have a program everyone uses for booting/etc, will it help out with this to the PC illiterate?

Didn’t realize there is ASUS TUF with DDR4. I recently returned the ROG Strix E mobo as there is no available DDR5 RAM with good latency (also the price is a bit too much for what it offers). I might go with a DDR4 ASUS board and reuse my old RAM with this upgrade cycle.

I like ASUS BIOS, have Gigabyte mobo with my 11700K setup but really prefer ASUS for overclocking.

I grabbed the TUF DDR4 1700 board with a 12900k cpu, just waiting for my NZXT cooler bracket for my z63 AIO, and then I'll assemble it and run some tests myself.

  14. Thanks, I'm not sure why the search function isn't working for me, I found that thread on page 3 about 10 minutes after I made this dumb post.

Already got the 6900xt, I'm pleasently surprised at its performance, it's pretty close to my 2 3090s I have (well, one right now until I get my RMA back).  Not too shabby IMO.

  15. One of my PC's crapped the bed yesterday, more accurately the eVGA 3090 in it died(funny my el-cheapo Zotac 3090s, and the 2080tis never failed me as of yet, but I've had an Asus and eVGA gpu fail now, heh).  While waiting for the RMA process, I want to get this other gaming PC up and running, and the only GPU available in my area for retail non Ebay-gouge price is the 6900xt.

So, question is, has anyone here ran a 6900xt for DCS in VR, and if so, how do you feel it compares to the performance folks have posted here with their 3090/3080 systems?

Well, I owned the Index and the Reverb G1 at the same time and opted for the Reverb.  Although many aspects of the Index were superior - audio, comfort, hardware IPD adjust, etc. - I decided to keep the G1 and sell the Index, mainly because resolution is king!

I'm glad I did, especially because the Reverb G2 provided a lot of things I felt the Index was better at than the G1 (see above).

Sure, the Index controllers are better, but it never stopped me going through HL:A twice, and many other VR games.

As a side note, I hardly even noticed the supposed larger FOV on the Index. Yes, it has a few degrees advantage, but no biggie, IMO.

+1 here.  I too have the G1, Index, and Rift S simultaneously (and all the other no Xtal units prior) before getting the G2s.  All we have now are the G2 units.  I'll still be interested to hear what the OP's opinion is.  I still feel the Index was the best constructed unit available in terms of quality, but that margin is all that wide.

My i9 9900k running at 5.2 GHz on all cores is still doing very well for me, think I will wait for another generation or two of motherboards and processors.

IMO a wise choice.  I have 3 PCs with 2 dedicated to DCS, 2 10900k and one 5950x (not using it for DCS atm), all using various 3090 GPUs.  I found that comparing my previous 3 9900k based PCs from a year+ ago to the 2 10900ks, the performance jump in DCS is very, very minimal.  I had planned on upgrading the 10900ks to the new 11900k, but based on the great above OP and various other tests I've seen on Youtube and other online sources, I've decided to wait for Alder Lake which hopefully will come this year.

The increase in performance, again just IMO, from even the 9900k much less the 10900k, to the 11900k, is simply not worth it.  Not so much the $$ involved either for me, but the general PITA of rebuilding, reinstalling, and setting up new PCs with all the various programs one needs to install and set up each time you rebuild.

I'm hoping Alder Lake brings good things.....hoping...

  18. Very well done Imacken, I have 2 CM3s arriving tomorrow, and was looking for some sort of guide on how to set up the physical detents (I have all the versions of Virpil's throttles, and the first version had internal detents, but I've long forgotten how I even set those up).  This is great, thanks for sharing your work, and saving the rest of us a lot of time and pita figuring this all out.

  19. WTS: HP Reverb HMD G1, updated version of first variant, with the cable/clip/etc fixes.  Used 10 hours max, like new condition. Located in Canada, will consider shipping outside of country (possibly).

    Price - $300 CAD + Shipping

  20. With VRnecksafer, can you bind a button for "look back/behind"?  Do you have to use that bind/button, as well as a "go back to forward", after of course having hit "recenter"?  If so, how do you do this, I downloaded VRnecksafer, but there isn't any docs with it, and haven't been able to try it in game as I'm not at home, but I'd like to get this figured out while at work today.
