  1. Thank you for your reply. And what on the AMD side, would you say, is the model that provides at least the same performance, image quality and stability as a RTX3060ti with openXR? RX 6700? 6700XT? 6750XT? 6800? If nobody knows, I’ll go with the 3060Ti. I already have the headset (Pimax 5k, see above) and indeed, I traded resolution for FOV (my personal preference). It does work with my gtx 1060, but not very well.
  2. Thanks for replying. A 3080 is unfortunately not an option. It will be either one of the cards above, or dropping DCS for another hobby. I don’t really need 90 fps, I can live with the ‘compulsive’ 45 Hz and the ghosting that goes with it. Do you think that a 6700xt + steamVR would be worse, or better, than a 3060ti + openXR ?
  3. Hi, I may finally have soon enough cash to upgrade my GPU. I’ll probably have the choice between a 3060Ti and a RX6700XT, maybe a 6750XT with some luck. The things is, my headset is a Pimax 5k super. I read some negative comments about the Pimax/AMD combination regarding compatibility, performance in DCS and image quality. I would welcome some advice. Thank you in advance!
  4. MYou need at least one base station and zero controller. correction: you need zero base station to set up the pimax headset and you can even play dcs without base station but the headtracking won’t be as good (only 3 dof).
  5. From what I read on this forum, you can’t go wrong with the Vive Pro 2. Go for it Edit: if I remember well, you can even increase the VP2’s FOV a bit by using a thinner foam than stock.
  6. I bought a Pimax 5K Super about six months ago, because it was on sale at about 550 Eur, because I was on a budget, and I wanted a wide FOV above all. Before that I had an Oculus CV1. Sound on the Pimax basic speakers is absolute crap, you have to upgrade or mod (I grafted the Oculus CV1 speakers and now it's OK). Comfort is so-so compared to the CV1. I had to replace the front foam and to add counterweights in the back. FOV is amazing, it's how VR should be, period. Now I can't go back to something narrower. Colours look OK to me. You'll have to try different gamma settings. There is SDE but less than on the Oculus CV1 (that's easy). Image was not clear at first, among others because I could not set the physical IPD where I wanted it (a well known issue with Pimax). I have to wear prescription glasses to have a clear image. Pimax set up was not as simple as for the CV1: I had to "calibrate" the display offset in the Pimax software so that my eyes are relaxed wrt convergence when looking far away (if you see what I mean). You'll need at least one Vive base station, which can be a second-hand first-gen base station (that's what I have). It works but IMHO it's not as accurate and easy to setup as the Oculus CV1's. You can also use the Pimax without base station but then you have only 3DOF instead of 6DOF (rotations only, no translations) which is OK only if you don't move your head much. I would say buy the Pimax if AND ONLY IF: 1) the FOV is more important for you than anything else; 2) you like tinkering. That was the case for me. If FOV is not so important for you then indeed you should rather consider the models listed by Supmua.
  7. 'Just compared, quick & dirty, Pitools+SteamVR versus Pimax VR experience and no "visible" SteamVR, Instant Action. With my hardware (old) and my graphical settings (almost everything at minimum), barely any difference. According to the internal DCS FPS counter, sometimes I get, at most, maybe 5% more FPS with Pimax experience. Within the margins of error. Maybe SteamVR is running in the background after all. Oh well it was worth a shot.
  8. I just kind of repeated what the first posts were saying. Yes maybe SteamVR is still running in the background. The only thing I care about is whether I’ll gain some FPS (without losing any image quality of course). That’s what the OP seemed to suggest. I haven’t had the time to do comparisons yet.
  9. Success! (I think). I found in some Reddit thread explaining that I had to launch DCS from Pimax VR experience and not from Pitools or from the desktop. So I downloaded Pimax VR experience, installed it, imported DCS into the library, had to restart the app and reboot the PC once and now it seems to work! DCS starts in VR in my Pimax without SteamVR. Now whether I gain nNY FPS, that's another story...
  10. Nope. Tried with Skatezilla's utility, but even then, with Oculus API selected instead of SteamVR, it is still SteamVR that starts when I start DCS. On the other hand, a game that I had bought on the Oculus store does start in VR without starting SteamVR (and neither does it start Oculus Home, which is nice).
  11. Thank you, but that didn't work for me. Running the updater asks me if I want to update (I'm still at 2.7.9 stable) and then just launches DCS and SteamVR as usual. Or did you mean Skatezilla's ultility (which I've never used)?
  12. Me too I'd like to know how to play DCS on my Pimax 5K with just the Oculus drivers rather than SteamVR. I mean, if that increases the framerate. I installed the Oculus software, but when I start DCS either from Pitools or from the desktop shortcut, it still starts SteamVR. Does anybody know what I should do ? Should I use a modified DCS shortcut or something like that? Is there a SteamVR setting to change so that with some games like DCS SteamVR does not start? Thanks in advance.
  13. Why do you think they sell base stations? of course you need at least one.
  14. Hello, I hope nobody will get mad because this is not "purely" DCS-relevant. I'm trying to find the tool that the authors of these two videos are using to measure the FOV. I like it because it is (or at least seems) more detailed than just horizontal/vertical FOV measurements, and it measures the stereo overlap too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or9ZO8omp4c (after about 16 minutes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0HhWo4Ajq4 (after about 6 minutes) I typed https://boll.itch.io/wimfov in my browser but that led nowhere (404). Then I typed some keywords (VR, FOV, etc.) in the search box but still could not find the tool. Thanks in advance for your help.
  15. Thank you. Yeah what I meant was indeed 120 Hz with capping at 30 FPS (or 40) with no motion compensation. I got the terminology mixed up a bit, but you figured out what I meant. Too bad that’s not possible with the VP2. And yes I need a better GPU. But they’re currently more expensive than the VP2 itself.. :-(.
  16. Hi, I have a question about the vive pro 2. There is a ‘performance’ setting at half resolution and a refresh rate of 120Hz, intended for old hardware (such as my GTX1060, the minimum official requirement - of course, that's probably more to play beat sabers than DCS or Alyx). In the Oculus Rift CV1, which natively runs at 90Hz, I can cap the refresh rate at 30 Hz (or 45Hz) with the oculus tray tool, to stay below the GPU bottleneck. Then each frame is displayed 3 times (or twice at 45Hz). No interpolation (no motion compensation). That works well for me. I find it smoother than when I let the computer try to produce as many frames as possible (never getting above 45 fps anyway). Is it possible to do the same with the vive pro 2 (lock the framerate at 30 or 40 Hz, with no frame interpolation/motion compensation, i.e. displaying the same frame 4 or 3 times when at 120Hz)? Maybe using the max framerate option in the Nvidia control panel? Or is that what the vp2 does automatically if motion compensation is turned off? Thank you in advance.
  17. Thanks a lot for the details. Some reviews say that the VP2 hasn’t got enough binocular overlap (that not enough of the picture is seen by both eyes at the same time) compared to other headsets. Have you noticed that? Congrats on your Varjo!
  18. Thank you, I’ll have a look at this telegram thing. Who knows. But, probably, so many people are on it by now... I seriously considered the G2. But For the price they ask around here and the marginal increase in FOV (which depends on the user’s head (shape)) it is not worth it. Me just want mo’ bigger better FOV, period
  19. Hello, I see in your signature that you have both the index and the pro 2. Would you have any comments on their FOVs, and on what DCS in the VP2 looks like in half res (if you ever tried)? Thanks in advance.
  20. Well, after re-reading all the kind answers to all my questions, reading some more reviews, sleeping over them and playing one more time with my CV1, I concluded that what I miss the most is not a clearer image (less SDE) or more details or more eye candy or more fps, but just a greater FOV. Curious, as most other DCS players seem to prefer more clarity (that is, the G2 or the Q2). That means: no G2 or Q2 for me. Either I wait at least 6 more months (probably much longer than that) and save money to buy first a better GPU and then a valve index or whatever is the king of FOV by then (assuming it won't cost me my second kidney), or I buy first a vive pro 2 and enjoy its better FOV and clearer displays, at half resolution (about the same as the CV1's) until GPUs become affordable again. (Yes the VP2 is the most expensive of the bunch but the Index and the G2 aren't cheap either around here (Europe) and currently a RTX3060 or even a 2060 costs about as much.) Too bad there's less feedback on the VP2 (since there are many more G2 and Q2 owners, I guess). Anyway, thank you all for your answers and comments!
  21. Thanks! Do you have to set all graphical settings to the minimum to have enough fps? I ask because I have only a GTX 1060. And I suppose you see little difference in FOV compared to the CV1?
