  1. Microsoft Force Feedback 2 + Saitek X45 (Throttle use only) + Saitek ProFlight Rudder pedals
  2. That's exactly what I'm going to do. I will be getting the above combo and OC the CPU to 5GHz which should give some meaningfull increase in performance. While HD framerate even now is satisfactory I tried the 1060 with a VR headset and an 8600k but did not got a great boost ( maybe 30-50%) compared to the current Xeon setup so obviously the 1060 is the bottleneck here. Do you think is worth it getting the i5- 8600k instead of the i-3 8350k for DCS ? Essentially they are the same chip with the 8600 having two extra cores which can prove to be a a disadvantage in obtaining the maximum possible single thread speed with OC due to the higher thermal loading from the extra cores. Can anyone confirm that DCS has gone multithreaded or still limited to 2 cores only ? Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
  3. Hi Guys, I'm thinking whether it's time to upgrade my 9 year old mobo\ cpu platform given the lackluster and unsatisfactory performance of new CPU's coming out both from Intel and AMD. So, I decided to max out all the settings both in DCS and in NVIDIA drivers and did this test in order to determine where is the bottleneck: I was pleasantly surprised that I'm getting such 'high' frame rates on such an old machine :-) Not sure if the developers implemented multi threading in the latest 2.5 upgrade but it seems it is now using all the cores with CPU usage sometimes going up to 100%. Or maybe the Vulcan API got implemented in the meantime !? Do you think it is time to buy a new Z370\i3-8350k or i5-8600k combo given that the current CPU and GPU are showing weird behavior and not being utilized 100% all the time even now ? One think is clear, 16GB RAM is needed since the page file gets 18GB large but due to a fast SSD I don't have any problems with that :-), However DDR2 modules are only available in 2GB so no chance to upgrade to 16GB even though the mobo ( Gigabyte EP-45 DS3) supports that. I'm still not convinced whether to spend money on a bad quality product such as the latest CPU offerings or wait for some next generation. That is not the problem but I would expect a new CPU to be at least twice as fast than my current Xeon E5450 @3,8 in all tasks. Any opinions would be appreciated.
  4. Apparently the problem is with the HeadTracker API which is used by DCS with FreeTrack by default. Only way to solve it is to use TrackIR API instead. In old versions of DCS (32-bit) this was done with TrackIRFixer, unfortunately it seems there is no 64-bit version :(
  5. Just tried out the new VSR feature with the latest ATI drivers, it works great on my R9 270x:thumbup: Noticeably better picture quality with the same or even better framerate, in essence what we get is free of charge supersampling :-) However, there is one big problem: FreeTrack is not working for me anymore :-( Once I enter a game it seems to crash since the icon is not there then I return to the taskbar. I suspect this has something to do with the changed aspect ratio in the cockpit on the higher resolution. Has anyone noticed the same issue happening with FreeTrack or maybe also TrackIR and if there is a possible fix ?
  6. Don't get me wrong for the following discussion, I have almost every module so far with the exception of the WW II planes. I know it sounds stupid but if the sales and profit were better than expected for these modules my assumption was that it would derail and delay the development efforts from more contemporary (and everyone will agree much more complicated :-)) modules like the DCS: F/A-18 and with time the whole sim would transform into a WW II era platform  However, this fear proved to be unsupported by the current developments and now I even find the free TF-51 fun to fly. Looking forward and will definitely get the P-47 since it is my favorite machine of WW II ] P.S. With time more and more limited WW II seem perfect for a fast furball in MP :-)
  7. The first flight sim I came in contact with ... :-)
  8. Regarding this topic, I can just say that what matters the most for DCS performance (aside the GPU) is single thread CPU performance. It doesn't matter how many cores you have it only matters how fast is each one of them. For example, I'm still running DCS on a vintage Core2Duo E8400 system overclocked @4-4,2GHz which at those speeds is actually comparable in single thread performance with contemporary middle class CPU's. This in combination with a decent GPU (R9 270x) gives me respectable framerates even of 1080p. I'm waiting for DCS 2.0 to see if it still support only a single core, in that case I will go for a OC'd Pentium E3248 which gives comparable single core performance even with i7 4670k at stock. Of course if you have extra money to spend (or also play other games) you can always go for an i7, but for now it is not a worthwhile investment :-) P.S. As for AMD I have only tried DCS at a friends of mine who has FX 6700 which gives much lower performance than E8400
  9. Have been flying mp since Flanker 2.51, nice memories of the 56k modem sound and Roger Wilco :-)
  10. I have a similar problem as well. The workaround is to open the Stream dialogue first then close either by clicking Ok or Apply before starting FreeTrack. If this does not work then is the camera driver (PS3 Eye here) and you will need to disable enable the camera under Device Manager in order to reset the driver. Hope this helps :-)
  11. I have started playing DCS again after a longer break and while I must admit that although the new Su-27 FM is much more convincing there are a few quirks I doubt are like that in real life: - The plane can depart into an unrecoverable spin, apparently when the wing tanks are still not empty (above 5200kg fuel left). If it enters a pitch oscillation no matter what you do there is no chance to recover it (one thing I didn't had time to try is to enable Direct Control Mode). Have to say this only happened once while vertical maneuvering with some drones in the Georgian campaign. - Always enters an inverted spin when trying to do the tailslide maneuver. This does not appear to happen on airshows :-) - Enabling the autopilot and then disabling disrupts the trim around the pitch axis. However I'm using the MS FFB2 with the sensors taped over so I could release the handle while in autopilot so this might be a controller specific issue. Apart from this the new FM is really great especially at critical regimes and landing.
  12. It would be my guess also. Just by upgrading to DirectX11 should probably resolve the crossfire issue. Another question is multithreading\parallelism since the sim now runs on only 1 core for the graphics and 1 for the sound. This really limits the potential of modern multicore systems. So far I have not made the decision to buy a new pc since upgrading will not bring huge single core performance increase and DCS is the only game I play :-) On the other side it must be admitted hands down that single core performance is really good for such a complex application.
  13. Hi Everyone, I'm currently running a single Sapphire R9 270x 2GB and getting quite decent framerates almost everything maxed out. Just came across a good offer for another second hand Sapphire R9 270x (100eur) so I'm seriously considering to purchase it in light of the forthcoming DCS 2.0 release. While in other games the R9 270x combination in crossfire offers an unbeatable price/performance ratio as far as I'm informed the current engine of DCS does not support cards in crossfire :-(. I would really appreciate an advice ( or even better an insider tip from beta testers of DCS 2.0 :-)) whether this upgrade will be worthwhile. Thanks in advance, Ilija
  14. RIP Jim, my condolences to all of his family and friends. No doubt the flight sim community has lost one of it's most enthusiastic members :-(
  15. Hi Everyone, After reinstalling DCS World and BS2 on a new system (Windows 7 64-bit), I'm encountering an issue with the entry of characters in the password textbox of the logging window in the multiplayer client. When I enter even a single character the flashing cursor moves one position to the right and it's not possible to bring it back with either the delete or left arrow buttons. The same happens when entering the whole password, further moving the flashing cursor several positions to the right. It is best described by looking at the pair of screenshots below, first one with one character, the second one with the whole password Have tried to solve this issue by restarting the game and the pc so far with no success, will attempt re installing the game to see if it helps I would really appreciate any help, since it prevents me from logging into MP. Best Regards, Ilija
  16. Hi Everyone, Since the recent release of DCS World has attracted my interest to get back to some flying, I have dusted off my old X45 in addition to the MSFFB2 which I'm also using in some other sims. I have been searching for a description of hotas assignment mainly for the A-10 so that I can create my own profile using the MSFFB2 + X45 throttle + Freetrack, found the one based on the TM Warthog picture corresponding to the real A-10 hotas and a profile made for the X45 on http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=75279&highlight=x45+profile Would be really grateful if you can provide me with some links or suggestions on how to best setup this combo since I don't intend on using the original X45 stick
  17. Thanks guys, will go with the 2GB 6850 and I think that it will be sufficient for 1680 x 1050 with 8x AA. Futureproofing my current configuration is not so important since is already outdated so I suppose will have to go for a new pc if switching to a larger screen/multiple screen configuration ...
  18. Hi Everyone, I'm about to update my anyway obsolete system so that I can squeeze a bit more from it for a while since I don't have much time lately for playing sims to justify the investment in a completely new rig at this moment. My current configuration is a Core2Duo E8400@3,6Ghz with 4GB RAM and ATI HD4850 with 512 VRAM. So far it has served me well, but I feel that the graphics especially the 512 VRAM is becoming the main bottleneck for limiting performance, so I have decided to switch to a more modern graphic card. The choice is between the Sapphire HD 6850 with 2GB or the HD 6870 with 1GB GDDR5 both going for roughly the same price (around 150 eur). I have read that DSC: A-10C requires around 1,5 GB at airports and 1GB VRAM under normal flight conditions to store textures at high settings with AA on. iIf that's true I suppose the HD6850 with 2GB of VRAM and a slighly slower GPU would be the way to go. Thanks in advance, Ilija
  19. It's the Su-25SM modernization. Like the comparable Su-25 Scorpion modernization from the Georgian side, I don't see any significant benefit from these projects since the main purpose of the Su-25 is to be a CAS aircraft and neither modernization programs addresses that primary mission, instead focusing on not so crucial things like improved navigation systems, fancy HUD and MFD's while the weapon's suite and the defensive capabilities remain the same in both of these cases with unguided rockets still being the primary weapon of choice, hence not improving the aircraft in any significant way because of the lack of more modern guided munitions. Taking into consideration my experience with the A-10C simulator so far, it's the eyeball Mk1 sensor which is all about in the CAS mission, although pods and fancy equipment can help but only if accompanied with new weapons like in the case of the A-10C modernization program. In comparison, these two Su-25 modernization projects where only avionics equipment was introduced might provide some improvements in the aircraft but not in such a qualitative way like in the A-10C modernization.
  20. It seems that the effect of these rockets should not be underestimated in certain combat scenarios, otherwise the Russians would not have kept using them for so long. However, I always prefer using a smaller number of higher caliber rounds like the S-24 or at least the S-13 as opposed to salvos of S-8 in the simulator. Of course, a salvo of even the outdated S-5 can cover a lot of area and provide a useful alternative to cluster bombs in dealing with enemy troop concentration or guerrillas who are spread across the area. I suppose in real combat sometimes is enough to wound or scare the opponent instead of disintegrating him into little pieces :-). And even a direct hit of few S-8's can knock down an Abrams tank in the simulator, so if take this for an indicator of any real life performance it is clear why more and more air arms who have large stockpiles of these rockets are making decisions to upgrade them with some guidance capability ( USA, Israel and Russia leading the way) taking into consideration the availability and falling prices of the technology used in the guidance kits.
  21. This question came up on my mind after reviewing some videos of Su-25 and Mi-24 actions yesterday and having so much time spent on flying Eagle Dynamics simulators. Don't you agree that the Russian and other air forces using soviet era equipment and tactics tend to depend on the use of unguided aerial rocket projectiles on a much larger scale than their NATO counterparts ? Almost every video out there of Russian aircraft in action shows them firing a wide range of unguided rockets types, while the western doctrine is to use them only in army aviation and even then on a very limited scale as an area denial weapon. Is this only a question of tactical doctrine or economy and training comes into play as well (I assume this is among the cheapest types of aerial weapon and requires less training to use it to some effect) ? My impression is that unguided rockets simply lack the power and precision to be an effective weapon and that is the main reason why they are not in widespread use with NATO air forces which have the option of using guided weapons in comparison with eastern air forces which don't have such luxury due to economical constrains.
  22. It has been proven on numerous occasions that the best way to deal with such terrorists is like what we saw yesterday. I agree that common sense and arguments should be used whenever possible in an effort to lessen ethnic and religious conflicts, but once things go out of control and the other side starts to use non institutional means for achieving it's own goals, deadly force should be used if found necessary. Any sign of weakness in dealing with the terrorists will just fuel their ambitions and reaffirm their goals to achieve their agenda from hell.
  23. The man (if you can call him a man after using one of his wifes as a human shield) got what he deserved, and if others decide to follow his steps now they will know what they can expect to happen to them ...
  24. It sure looks like a MH-53 or some other version of the Sea Stallion from the ramp and the hub of the tail rotor. On second view an Osprey would be more likely since those wing panels besides the ramp do look quite huge. Not to stray off topic I would like to congratulate on the liquidation of the most wanted terrorist in the world, especially since we have experienced first hand what terrorism is like in our country as well, fortunately they were not resorting to the use of suicide tactics like in some other terrorist actions across the world.
