    Dear all,

with our sincere apologies for both the late update and delay:

Unfortunately, and with a heavy heart, we had to decide for a delay for the DCS: F-4E Phantom II release. We prepared a detailed update for you, if you would like you can read up on it here:

    https://store.heatblur.com/blogs/news/of-delays-and-silence

Furthermore we prepared an in depth, regular development update for you all, to bring you up to speed about the state of the module, as is, on what remains to be done, and what is already complete:

    https://store.heatblur.com/blogs/news/of-delays-and-progress-part-ii

Finally, we would like to share the long awaited EPISODE III of our Phantom video introductions, regarding Navigation in the F-4E Phantom II this time.

Thank you all for your amazing support and extermely kind patience in these past few weeks.

    Your Team Heatblur

Thanks for the updates. It's always nice to see what developers are working on and what their challenges have been. I'd love to see more updates like this in future projects. Heck, maybe even start with a list of things that need to be done and cross them off for us as they get completed?

    Thanks again @Ironmike.

Maybe my google-fu is weak today, so I couldn't find the answer.

Why would only 3 barrels be sighted as opposed to all 6?

I asked my crew chief, SSgt Paul Lane that question and he replied "because that's all the T.O. requires". I never asked again. 😁

nullToo bad we likely have to wait for the world map and all the new tech features we've been told are coming.  Destructible terrain and trees, IR missiles and AI that can't see through clouds, improved infantry, etc.  Then there's napalm/incendiarys which are still on the F-18 roadmap and used by a lot of upcoming planes, AIM-9E, AIM-4D, extended fuse bombs, CBU pods like the A-4 mod(which were used on the F-4E but we aren't getting them for some reason), and lot's of other stuff that hasn't been mentioned including period correct ground, naval, and air assets.

For now, at least there are mods and what I like to call "Vietnam at home" or "I can't believe it's not Vietnam for the 30 seconds it takes to traverse the southern part of Guam".null

So why isn't the A-4 an  official mod? Seems like its good enough to be one.

A Vietnam map with parts of Thailand Laos and Cambodia would be highly desirable in DCS. Due to size perhaps it could be divided into a north and south region.

I've found dogfighting with guns be it ww2 or jets, follows the old cowboy action shooting adage "nothing is ever too big or close to miss"

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see what this has to do with my post.

Folks if you want to have a social discussion take it to another forum. It is not welcome here.

If it continues I will hand out warnings.

Please continue to discuss the Manual.

    thank you

My apologies for the post I made after this one. I didn't see this until after I made my post and edited it and in retrospect I should have deleted my post as soon as I saw this and in not doing so I made your job harder. I regret my inaction in this matter.

Well, Vulcan has the "shot string" effect built in, simply by shooting one bullet after another. 🙂 The hard part, of course, is placing your nose so that the cloud of shells coincides with the bandit's flight path.

    Exactly. 😀

By rifle or tank cannon standards it's actually horribly inaccurate (1/6 of a degree is 10 MOA), but for an aircraft cannon, it's just fine. Remember, it doesn't take many 20mm rounds to damage something in a modern aircraft. The big concern is scoring a hit at all.

With the shotgun like pattern and high rate of fire the odds of scoring a hit increase in the same manner that a shotgun increases your odds. In an actual shotgun, the shot not only spreads out (width) but it also creates what is known as a shot string where the individual pellets arrive on target at slightly different times. The shot string effect is more pronounced with lead shot than it is with steel or other non-toxic shot alternatives.

@Elf1606688794 Thanks for the two videos above but the last one is ....War Thunder openly arcade videogame. Idk how a footage to that videogame is relevant to anything external of it, unless it was mistakenly referenced.

I've never played War Thunder so I didn't know it was from that game. I'll edit my post and thanks for the correction.

I think we should establish a ground on which we're discussing this topic.

    1) DCS vs real world. The DEFAs in DCS don't to diddley squat against AA targets. IRL, one or two hits were fatal against a MiG-21. Compare that to DCS, where the -21 will happily bullet-sponge.

    2) What are we talking about with the M61?

ROF? You'll need a finite amount of time for the barrel to spin up and move at BRRRT rate. So while Mr. Electric Motor is getting up to speed, the DEFA has already sent shots downrange at close to it's nominal rate. IIRC, a normal revolver action gun (DEFA, M39, which are both descentants of the Mauser 213 design) will have a ROF-advantage over the Gatling design M61 for the first second of trigger down. After that, the M61 takes over.

Remember that pulling the trigger in the F-5 opens the vent doors first, so your mileage on that "more rounds delivered within the first second"-consideration may vary there. The four M39s on the F-100 should give you full stereo right away.

Dispersion? Well, it helps in hitting something, while it helps missing what you're actually aiming at, at the same time. This may or may not be beneficial.

    3) Trigger time? The M61 will have a disadvantage. Maybe only the A-7E won't suffer here with 1000+ rounds to spend.

    4) Damage per round. Similar, but highly depending on the modelling of the shells and dependant on the DM of the aircraft at the recieving end.

Spin up time on the M61 is greatly exaggerated by people.

As you can see, the gun fires almost instanteously, quicker than the F-5 with it's blast doors.

Pilots are also taught to fire 1 second bursts, which is about 100 rounds.

Dispersion. It's intentional with both the M39 revolver cannons and the M61. When boresighting the M61 you boresight 3 of the 6 barrels and they never boresight to the same spot on the target. The gun is designed to fire with a shotgun effect, in this case, an 8 foot spread  at 1000 yards.

I believe the SUU-23 gun pod is the only one that was driven by an electric motor, the SUU-16 was driven by a ram air turbine that required the aircraft to be moving at 300mph minimum but 400+ was optimal. M61's mounted internally on aircraft are generally driven by the aircrafts hydraulic system.

ROF advantage goes to the M61 almost instantly.

    *Edit* Edited for accuracy.

With the newly announced 6 week (at best) update cycles, if it doesn't release by mid-February they will miss the "end of winter" promised deadline as first of April will be the next update period. (We never see new modules released without a corresponding update as it has to be included as an AI in the base-sim.)

Why would they not release an update for the Phantom in addition to scheduled updates?

Jeeezzzz!!! I just pointed out that, only the 20th FS was not a Wild Weasel Squadron. Nothing more, nothing less. And why I pointed this out?

I don´t really know, maybe because I´ve been a pround Member of the Silver Lobos long time ago and if you look at my profile picture... its me in a F-4F Cockpit!

So please everybody calm down and let it be. Enjoy the waiting time. Read the nice Manual and when the F-4 is out, have a phreaking good time and really have a blast...even fly some Wild Weasel missions.

Until than..Horrido! and who is the bloody who?

It wasn't anything you did or said. It's all on someone else that accused players of being "low knowledge gamers that didn't care about history" and accused Heatblur of false advertisement. I won't mention any names but his initial is Vampyre. :wavetowel:

Isn't DCS World a huge sandbox? And I, when I was a kid, used to sit in the sand and play with the toys that I got. Ten percent were in my hand and ninety percent happended in my imagination. So if there's a Phantom in DCS World and it's as close as possible to the real Weasel... well, I'll take it! This has nothing to do with false promises or even malicious advertising fraud.

Yes, Heatblur know their audience. It was made for the masses who don't know or care about the history. That was one of my points and I appreciate the agreement on that part. I maintain that the advertising is false in regard to the F-4E as a Wild Weasel. I have said multiple times that the people who know (mainly the been there done that veterans) are pointing out the squadron discrepancy which is what my original post was partially in response to.

I guess you better quit the game then since we don't have every single variant/livery/weapon/map to make missions that are historically accurate.

If Heatblur had put an F-4G livery on an E for a video on SEAD, you'd still be griping. Most of us understand which livery was used doesn't really matter because that wasn't the point of the video, although I bet it did make some German players happy to see it. (The livery.)

I am going to enjoy doing SEAD missions with the Phantom I worked on and you won't have to partake in that if you don't want to. Beautiful isn't it?

I don´t get it - is it against the law to fly SEAD/DEAD missions in an F-4E in DCS, or is it the use of the "Weasel" callsign in the video that is the great heresy?

Maybe SEAD is only Wild Weasel if it´s from the Wild Weasel region of Vietnam, else it´s just sparkling SEAD...

I laughed at the Champagne/sparkling wine reference. Well played sir, well played.  🤣

Ah, an ad hominem. Thank you for confirming the solidity of my points by responding with, essentially, nothing.

    Quote
    ad hominem /hŏm′ə-nĕm″, -nəm/

    adjective

    1. Attacking a person's character or motivations rather than a position or argument.
"Debaters should avoid ad hominem arguments that question their opponents' motives."
    2. Appealing to the emotions rather than to logic or reason.
    3. Of or relating to ad hominem

You have repeatedly attacked others motivations, players and Heatblur, and then to say I had an ad hominen attack is ridiculous and nothing more than projection on your part.

You saying players are "low knowledge" or "they don't care about history" while standing on your pedestal refusing to acknowledge the role and capability of the F-4E in SEAD missions is elitist and dishonest. And coming from somone that professes to care about history? Well, let's just say it doesn't help your credibility.
