  1. As a starting point, I have no experience with VR. None. Zero. I have a decent system and would like to get in to VR for DCS (maybe some MSFS 2020 and IL2 as well). My system specs are Ryzen 9 5950X CPU, RTX 3080 GPU, 64GB DDR4-3200 RAM, and an M.2 NVMe SSD. I'm looking for guidance on which VR headset might be the best for DCS. Also, I have some general questions around usage... i.e. how are cockpit mouseclicks controlled while wearing the headset? How do you know where you're hitting the keyboard? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks
  2. For those asking, turbulence can come in many forms. The common ones are thermal or convective turbulence, caused by rising air (can be from t-storms, uneven heating of the ground, etc), wind shears (a change in wind direction over a short distance or altitude window), mechanical turbulence (caused by wind over the ground or obstructions), and frontal turbulence (as the name implies, experienced when flying across a front). The new clouds in DCS are great, but as a pilot, one place that most flight sims do a really poor job of simulating is weather. In real world flying, there is a tremendous amount of time spent understanding and preparing for the weather before heading up, and in combat flight sims it is almost a non-factor.
  3. Being able to fly the SEAD mission should be one of the poll options. That's the best thing about the Viper.
  4. For what it is worth, I figured I'd post my experience in the case it helps someone. After updating to the latest open beta, I was getting a crash upon exiting the very first mission. EVERY TIME. Super annoying. I had struggled to get my frame rates back to a playable level after the original 2.7 update, added additional RAM (which did the trick), and then the next update added the consistent crash at mission exit. After trying a few things, I found a simple solution. I deleted the FXO and metashaders contents, I unchecked the full screen box in options and increased the preload radius to 50%. I started up a mission, and what do you know?... no crash. I flew mission after mission with no crash. In the effort to test framerates, I moved the cockpit display resolution from 1024 to 512 and fired up a mission... and promptly crashed upon exit. Happened 2 more times before I thought to check the FXO folder... it was repopulated, so I deleted the contents again... and back to flying without crashes! At the end of the day I've deduced the following (I am no expert, but I feel there is fair evidence to support my conclusions on my system): 1. There is a memory problem in 2.7 that is killing framerates... I have a decent system and have played forever with no framerate issues, and after trying every possible solution in settings, I could only get my framerates back by adding additional RAM. 2. The full screen option must be unchecked or you're going to have crashes on mission exit. 3. You need to delete the contents of the FXO and metashaders folders, and you need to repeat this step if you change any settings or you'll revisit crash-ville. Hope this helps someone. Specs: i7-8700 @ 3.2GHz 48 GB RAM Win 10 GeForce GTX 1080ti
  5. Lol, time compression to and from the fence-in / fence-out. I’m a private pilot and airplane owner and I’m trying to free up more time for real world flying this year, less time simming.
  6. I also own this one, and it's a great first-person history of the F-14. Lots of great stories from the crews that flew the Tomcat over the years, and some good footage as well. I'm also not associated in any way with the production company, just figured I'd second the recommendation as I think most F-14 enthusiasts would really enjoy this one.
  7. Zone 5 is easily the best campaign released in DCS to date. A few high points: - The air combat, for the first time in DCS, feels realistic. Each of the engagements is a quick flurry of action, lasting no more than a couple minutes. One of my big complaints in most DCS campaigns is the "air quake" feel of combat... one player vs. the world in engagements that seem to be 1 vs 8, with the action lasting for 20 minutes. This really isn't how nearly any modern engagement has played out. - The treatment of the built-in comms is awesome. I love the checklists and readbacks, the discussion of sorting the bandit groups, etc. Really well done. It adds an element of aviation that has been really lacking in DCS. - The missions are an appropriate length. I can fly one over the course of about 30 - 45 minutes, which is great when you work a full time job and have a wife and kids. Overall, really great work by Reflected and Bio. Hope to see more like this one, and I'll be buying more of your campaigns!
  8. Just discovered Liberation, and man, it’s a game-changer. Quick question... I started an invasion of Iran scenario... in the briefing, radio freqs for awacs and others aren’t showing. Is there a way to fix this?
  9. I hate to chew up more space with this topic, but man, I'm struggling. I spent about 30 min yesterday testing various ways to employ the Rockeye family (CBU-99 & Mk-20) successfully, mainly against trucks. On the Nevada map, I dropped CCIP in singles, pairs, from various burst heights (900, 1200, 1500, 2200, etc) and scored maybe 2 kills over about 30 bombs dropped. The drops were on the money from about a 30 degree dive each time, usually from about 7k AGL. The dispersion pattern was consistently really tight (way too tight) and there was basically no use in trying to use the Rockeye. Am I the only one getting these results? Am I missing something? Other than that really enjoying the Hornet. Seems like the HARM is finally to the point where it works pretty effectively, and I'm even getting a decent carrier landing here and there (hey, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then).
  10. A repair did the trick. Awesome campaign! Really nice work! There's something really satisfying to the stick & rudder flying of the F-86. A nice change from the modern jets.
  11. Hi all, For starters, this is a great, truly top-notch campaign. Really enjoying it. I’m enthused to start the air war, but on mission 7, as soon as I enter the cockpit by clicking “fly”, the game completely freezes and doesn’t respond to anything. Anyone else having this challenge, or have any solutions? I’m running the latest open beta. Thanks
  12. I thought I saw something where a number of the F-16 bugs were planned for a hot fix for today. Did I totally make that up? Serious question, not being snarky. Thanks
  13. Back on topic, where are these pics of F-14Bs or Ds launching in afterburner? I can honestly say I’ve never seen one, can’t wait to see his proof.
  14. Dude, tell him to show you a pic of an F-14B launching from the catapult in afterburner. He won’t be able to. He’s going to give you a bunch of A models, which are easily distinguished from the B. If you need help deciphering the A from the B, post the pics here and I’m sure you’ll get some help.
  15. Hi Kaba, I’ve tried both the cold start and hot start versions. I’m using the latest open beta, updated on Friday. Thanks!
  16. Hi All, I seem to be having an issue with the Cage the Bear campaign. After starting mission 1, I'm immediately dumped to the map screen (the "F10" screen). I hit F1 over and over to no avail (yes, the key is functional and yes, it is mapped to cockpit. I haven't changed anything about the campaign and I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help appreciated! Dave
