  1. Thanks ARM505, just purchased "Low Level Hell" on my kindle. Appreciate the heads up! While reading "Snake Pilot" it seemed the Loach pilots working in the "pink" teams got the short end of the stick, I'm looking forward to the read.
  2. Awesome surprise, downloading now  Thanks Eagle Dynamics and Flying Legends!
  3. Thanks Speed! A bit off topic, but I've just finished reading Ed Macy's "Apache" and "Hellfire" books. There a great insight into the work that goes into fielding the Apache and can highly recommend them. I also recently read "Snake Pilot" by Randy Zahn about flying the AH-1 Cobra over Vietnam. Interesting to see the contrast between attack helo aviation between the Vietman war and today, but one thing is the same...air crew need a hell of a lot of skill and courage!
  4. Thanks for sharing red.devil!
  5. My initial impressions have been positive. I've recently upgraded my machine and had been playing the original BS quite a bit, so it's easy for me to compare the two. For me, the installation was a breeze. I uninstalled the 1.02 patch on my original and then installed BS 2 with no hassles. The visuals in BS 2 are a step up and on par with DCS: A-10. All the work in this area makes for a more realistic looking landscape and a more immersive flight sim. In particular, I love the addition of the cockpit shadows, very nice! The weather is another big improvement in my opinion, as are new models (Mi-8 looks good at last!). I like the explosions (stuff continues to cook off after a vehicle is hit) and the way smoke is affected by wind. I haven't noticed any big differences in the flight model of the Ka-50, although wind seems to have a bit more of an effect on how you fly. I haven't had a chance to really test the AI, but both wingman and ground vehicle AI seems better to me. There are lots of little improvements, such as sounds (e.g. sounds added for closing cockpit door, gear transition alarm, fueld pumps etc.) that are nice. The comms menu has also been revamped to match DCS: A-10, but the same commands are there. In summary, it looks a lot better and is up to the visual standard of DCS: A-10. There are lots of little tweaks (e.g. sounds), along with a couple of big ones (e.g. weather) that add up to a more immersive sim for me. Without going into too much arguement, in my opinion it is well worth the $20.
  6. Wow....for me this is great timing. I've just put together a new machine with a core i7 2600, 64 bit Windows 7, gtx 580, solid state drive for the OS and flight sims and a 27" monitor. I had been flying Black Shark as was just thinking it looked a bit old compared to DCS: A10 and *BAM* I hear about this! As much as I like DCS: A10, my heart belongs to the Shark. Downloading now, can't wait to see the new cockpit!
  7. So much destruction and so many lives lost. It warms the heart to see so many people banding together to help. It'll take a long time to recover, but Kiwi's have a lot of spirit and they'll get through it together. Australia's thoughts and hopes are with the people of NZ.
  8. Thanks so much ED/TFC for all of your hard work. Great to see this product out the door and I hope it is a tremendous success. You guys deserve it  P.S. Torrent speed for me is around 170 kB/s at the moment (in Perth, Western Australia), thanks to everyone seeding!
  9. Mbot I tend to agree with you there. I love the DCS:BS and the attention to detail, but at times I feel that I'm not part of the battlefield. The stock 'Deployment' campaign is probably the most I've felt like an actual Ka-50 pilot out of all the missions I've flown, which has good interaction with ground controllers and other battlefield assets. I think ED are working on making the player feel more involved in the battlefield with DCS:A-10 (I've got the beta but haven't played it much). In other gaming genres I see more and more developers/publishers moving towards downloadable content in addition to the core product. I'm interested to hear what other BS/A-10 users think: would you be prepared to pay for additional single/multi player missions and campaigns that were endorsed or created by ED? I realise there are issues with protecting such material from piracy, but it could potentially be a revenue stream for ED, on top of sales of the core sim. I guess the guys involed with the Vergeev group would be in a good position to comment. Grimes Good topic Grimes, particularly when it comes to survey sims like LOMAC and IL-2. I'm old enough to remember the problems unrestricted modding caused in the CFS2 community and more recently it's been a problem with IL-2. I think that most users would be happy to see texture mods etc. open to the community, but leave the flight and weapon models in the hands of the developers. If the community perceives a problem with something that they can't mod then (hopefully) they can discuss it with the devs and in can make it's way into a patch.
  10. There is an interesting round table interview with a number of different people involved in the PC sim industry over at SimHQ. Check it out at http://www.simhq.com/_commentary/all_106a.html. There's some interesting discussion about how the industry has changed, what direction it may take in the future, how developers interact with their customer base and what they think we want in a sim, etc. Well worth a look (I hope this hasn't been posted elsewhere on the forum, if so mods please delete :)). I'm interested to hear what people here think, particularly relating to distribution models and downloadable content.
  11. Great videos mate, thanks for sharing!
  12. Nice vid, looks like a good campaign. Keep up the great work! Can't wait for FC2 to be released
  13. Good point h00t, it is a hard one to find these days, I couldn't find either LOMAC or FC in any retail stores in my neck of the woods. You can also pick it up from The Fighter Collection, http://fighter-collection.com/pages.php. I'm sure ED have considered this, hopefully they can come to an arrangement that suits everyone.
  14. I am a big fan of SH3 and had been looking forward to this one for a long time, but I think I'll be holding on to my money for a while longer. Judging by the posts over at the Ubi forums, there are a large number of people being affected by the connection requirement. I have a number of Ubisoft titles that I have been very happy with in the past (particularly sims like IL2, LOMAC, SH3), but I'll be steering clear of them in the future. I think that the DRM model Ubi are proceeding with is a big mistake. Whilst I do not condone piracy, this method seems to just make legitimate customers suffer. I hope they drop it for a more reasonable method of protection on the future (i.e. customers can actually use the product they paid for). Until then, I won't be buying anything from Ubi :(
  15. Cheers mate, these are great
  16. Really nice comparison between your textures and the photos. Great to hear you are considering the mud movers with the low altitude textures. I'm very impressed by your work
  17. Great choice of terrain, looks really good! Keep up the good work
  18. I can across this a while ago and thought that some people might not have seen it. A short clip showing the Ka-50 in action, including live firing of missiles, rockets and cannons on a target range. Hope you find it interesting: http://www.aviation.ru/www.rusarm.ru/video/Ka-50.wmv At one point in the video, the Ka-50 hits a light armoured vehicle with two guided missiles, but they don't look like Vikhr pylons on the wings (although the next shot in the vid shows a close-up of a Vikhr pylon). Anyone know what they are? Maybe AT-6 Spirals maybe? Certainly smashed that poor vehicle!
  19. You can take a look at the 1C's IL2 forums, check the stickies http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/forumdisplay.php?f=98
  20. Those of you who play IL2 might be interested in some of the new material planned for the 4.10 patch, being prepared by Team Daidalos. There looks to be some really neat stuff incorporating radio navigation into the sim, which will make a huge difference. Some of the features can be seen here: Also, there is a new video from Storm of War: This sim has been on the cards for years and to be honest I didn't think it would see the light of day, but it looks like things are moving along...looking very nice!
  21. You are right, at the moment INU drift is not modelled in the sim; you can fly around for hours and the PVI stays perfectly accurate. Hopefully drift will be incorporated in the future.
  22. I use VAC for my AI radio comms, and I find it very good. It adds a lot to the immersion for me and was well worth the price. You can use it to send any keystrokes to the sim, but personally I just use it for radio stuff. You can see it in action in this vid: There was another voice command package that I tried out (I forget the name now), which was free, but I couldn't get it to work well in any of my sims.
  23. I think it's a brevity call for when your wingman has destroyed a target. I'm not too sure exactly what he's saying, but it always seems to be when he's hit and destroyed a target. I used to think he was saying s@#t after he'd missed, at least that's what I say when I miss...
  24. I am very interested in Nvidia's approach, especially with the new GF100 cards due out in the not too distant future. Everyone I've talked to that has used the Nvidia 3D has raved about how good it is. I had heard that the HUD looks out in DCS: Black Shark though, and pretty much all I play are flight sims... Apparently the new GF100 cards will support multi monitor too, similar to ATI's Eyefinity. I had been looking at getting a 5870, but I'm going to hold off a bit longer now and wait and see...
