  1. Someone reported in another thread that once you install the module into a standalone DCS World installation, you can just copy the Mi-8 folder from there into your Steam DCS World installation, and use it normally. That way you can avoid having to keep two DCS Worlds on your PC.
  2. I read somewhere that they send Steam their sold key list once a month typically. I don't know if that means the 1st of each month or what. I've also been patiently waiting since purchase. I figure it's no problem though, because even if I have to wait, $20 is a hell of a deal, so I had to jump on it. :)
  3. I assumed it was an alternate account for someone so cowardly, they couldn't bear to even be associated with what they had to say. Judging by the terrible formatting, I'd say it just might be one of the very 12 year-olds that their post is railing against for no reason. However, as a former 12 year-old flight simmer (I'm a SubLogic Flight Simulator baby), I say that if a 12 year-old is willing and capable of flying a full-real sim like the KA-50 or A-10, then bring it on buddy! :pilotfly:
  4. TIR does that because it doesn't care how the game is launched, but I think with Steam, it wouldn't work because you're booting the game through the launcher, and not through Steam. I mean, unless I'm missing something. I've never even thought of just booting up the app directly... how do you choose a mission and stuff?
  5. That has never worked for me, since after you choose your mission and head to the cockpit, you're moved into another application, and Steam no longer sees you playing DCSW.
  6. I hate to say that I wish it weren't Aerosoft. I haven't been too impressed with their add-ons for FSX, but far from me to discourage another flight sim!
  7. There are mods for IL-2? I friggin love that game, and have had it consistently installed since it came out in 2001, and I also love goofing with community-made mods for most games, but I have to say I never even thought to look for any for IL-2. No need for them!
  8. We're up to 5 aircraft now (4 for free, one for $7.62 in the online store). Five is plenty. Not every sim needs be like IL-2 with dozens and dozens of available aircraft (nor did IL-2 even start out like that). And for a paltry (and amusing) $7.62, I'll keep buying them as they come out. I'm happy to support the developers, as they've done a terrific job with RoF. I agree with their business model, as laid out in the "vision statement" they released recently.
  9. I'm not sure I agree; I have yet to get tired of strafing convoys in IL-2. :pilotfly:
  10. Yeah that was a good patch. I was having a tough time controlling the aircraft, but now things are much smoother. Plus two free planes, plus the promise of more patches and planes to come!
  11. Very soon, from what I understand. That's their current focus, now that the first patch has been finished.
  12. Today the RoF developers gave us two new planes as a gift! We all now have access to the Albatros D5 and the Nieuport 28. Both are just as good as the two original planes, and your concerns about field of view may not so much of a problem, especially in the Albatros. Also, more planes will be available to purchase, apparently beginning next week. Finally the price has been announced: $7.62 for each new plane. For more detail, check out today's excellent post in the News section: http://riseofflight.com/Blogs/post/2009/07/10/Rise-of-Flight-Vision-Statement.aspx#continue There has been a lot of talk on their forum about having to buy new planes. I was a little worried at first, but $7.62 is certainly very reasonable, and I like their explanation for the unusual business model. I think that sim is going to blossom into something quite special!
  13. Well, I'm enjoying it anyway. :prop:
  14. That top wing really does cut down on visibility. I thank the Great Atheismo every day for my TrackIR. My roommate thinks I'm having a seizure when I'm playing RoF, spastically leaning all over the place to cover my blind spots. :) But it's fine as long as we're all in the same boat. Someone said that it's like a car racing game from 1905... what's wrong with that? A race is a race, as long as all the cars are fairly evenly matched. In RoF it's not like we're trying to down P-51's in those old kites... The patch really did some good things for the controls, by the way. Take-off was a real challenge before, but now it's much better. It may have it's problems, but this is a great, great sim.
  15. It seems to me that the bug forum over there is filled with threads about the same few bugs (and other things that people mistakenly think are bugs). And look! There's already a patch for the worst bugs, which to be honest weren't that bad to begin with...
  16. Rise of Flight patch was released today. I haven't tried it yet (I'm at work), but it's a nice array of fixes that are listed.
  17. Yes, there are single-player campaigns for each plane, as well as single missions, as well as a mission editor. The internet connection is their method of copy protection, more than anything.
  18. lol Yeah those blind spots took me by surprise. Good thing for TrackIR, because I find myself leaning all over the place during a dogfight to try and keep track of everyone. :) I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10 I suppose. It's pretty rough around the edges, but mostly that's not a big deal. I haven't tried the MP, but 10 minute rounds sound pretty strange for a game like this. Predictable/borderline-cheating AI dogfighting tactics, well, what else did we expect? They seem better than IL-2's AI tactics so far. If someone can write a truly realistic dogfight AI, please let us know, because no one has been able to yet, and you'd probably make some good cash with that. :music_whistling: Most of the 7.5 score I've given is in the sheer fun of flying in the sim. The graphics are so shiny, and the flight model even shinier (I think I can see my face!) that it mostly makes up for the shortcomings, in my opinion. The biggest disappointment for me so far is the initial lack of a track recorder. They say it's coming later, but I love taking flight sim videos and screenshots, and a track recorder is an indispensible tool for those pursuits...
  19. I have trouble with clean shots too, but I never considered it to be a control config issue. I figured it was one or more of the following: 1) Pilot Inexperience, 2) that these planes are not at all stable gun platforms, and/or 3) the flight model here is more detailed than that in IL-2, as far as wind and turbulence (and the planes are much lighter-weight as well). So basically it feels "right" to me, even if I suck at it currently. Low frame rate might be giving you troubles as well? Speaking of which... I can't believe that if you can run BS and Arma 2 (both of which I run fine), that you'd have to set RoF to Low settings across the board. Then again, you called the frame rates "tolerable", and that's a pretty subjective term. For example, I was damn tempted to keep RoF at the 18fps settings, which is below many people's threshold. But it actually felt pretty smooth anyway. I didn't keep those settings, of course, but it's nice to know I can go there if I feel the inclination.
  20. Be sure to uncheck the overall Post Effects box, as opposed to each Post Effect individually. I get good frames with Post on, but my final setup for the graphics is 8QxAA through the Nvidia CP, no post effects, and I get a pretty solid 45fps. With 16QxAA and Post Effects on, I get a surprisingly stable 18fps. I do love me that DoF effect, but 45fps is pretty spiffy. Oh, and with the Post Effects turned off, I can jack the Terrain detail to High (even though it says I'm past 100% of my video memory) and I still get good frames. So I decided that high AA, no post effects, and High terrain beats higher AA, post effects, and Medium terrain, at least for now. On Friday when I installed, registration was down completely. Luckily it came back up 15 minutes afterward (don't know how long it had been down though, maybe I just got lucky).
  21. Runs great for me on Vista 64. Is it already optimized for multicores? I was hoping an affinity tool would come out that would let me boost my settings a bit. :music_whistling:
  22. I agree, IL-2 brought things to a new level, as far as feeling of flight goes. I can't comment on how correct the feel was for each plane, but I know just what you're saying, about being able to FEEL the stall coming, or whatever. So yeah, IL-2 was the king in the department, at least until Black Shark, and now Rise of Flight is sportin a pretty damn good flight model as well. It's fun to get buffeted around by not just wind and turbulence, but also nearby explosions. :joystick: Is it realistic? I can't say, but it FEELS realistic, and that's more important, in my opinion.
  23. I've somehow managed to land successfully on all my attempts (it's weird, you feel like you're going 10mph). It's the getting into a position to be able to land that's the hard part! Also taking off. Taking off can be quite the challenge...
  24. That first screenie is great! Are you talking about your rudder pedals being inverted? I had that same problem. I posted it on the bug forum, and then decided to just deal with it (I can't use the twist joystick because of a sticking-rudder bug). But when I went back into the game, my rudder was fine. No idea why. The game is a little rough but very fun. Great feeling of flight. I'm amused that they include a printed keycard, since there are very few keys in a WWI sim. I'm still tweaking things, but my fps is pretty smooth. I have some post-processing turned on. I'm a sucker for DoF, and this game uses it to great effect. Unfortunately, there's a known issue that the Options button in the pause menu doesn't work. Also there doesn't seem to be a way to get to the Options screen from the main menu. So I'm forced to quit the game, change the setting, then boot back in. Luckily it loads pretty quickly. Overall so far, I give it a hearty thumbs-up. The apparent lack of any sort of replay system is very disappointing, however. And it needs a patch. But definitely I'm happy overall.
