  1. I've had mine for a couple of years now. It's holding up quite well. It's mot MIL-SPEC quality, but I did open it up and inspect the wiring harnesses and the button/switch mounting and it was an improvement over the X-55.
  2. Almost every characteristic of that landing, at least visually, brought back a lot of memories from when I was stationed aboard CVN-73 :)
  3. http://pensacola.craigslist.org/vgm/5539583965.html I can go check it out if anyone is interested
  4. That's all fine and dandy until you guys need a ride.
  5. Wings Of Prey never used the IL-2 monicker. It was the same developer who were licensed to make the console game "IL-2 Birds Of Prey". I was in Alpha and Beta for WoP and the Dev's never said it was going to be a full simulator. Even they admitted it was a sim lite. They got pilots into the studio to help with flight behavior, but never touted realistic flight models. It always was, and always will be a game with simulation elements. Same goes for War Thunder. It's not a sim. It can barely qualify as sim lite, but it fits well in that category. It's a game with sim elements that has an MMO grind built in. Not a bad idea. Watching how it pans out for them will be fun too :)
  6. It's a sim-lite in FRB battles mode. Knowing and accepting these facts going in makes for some fun flying.
  7. People should not use Photoshop unless they know how to use "Your" and "You're" properly. In the case of this pic - FAIL.
  8. Given the smoke at the end of the runway at the start of the video, looks to me like it was something they were rehearsing. Both receive idiot marks from me in that case. Being on the strip on a mini-quad is idiotic and dipping the wing as close to the ground as that is idiotic.

    audio question

Yeah, I didn't wanna get into MLS or sweeps...they're easy to go awry for the novice. With a freebie RTA program like http://www.e.kth.se/~johk/jdft/ he can get a visual picture of what's actually happening to the audio response in his room before, during, and after adjusting it. He can do some research on cubic volume vs saturation and how corners can attribute to harmonics. Max Length Sequences and sweeps would be the next step down the long and expensive route of audiophile-ism...followed by the search for 0.01% THD amplifiers and speakers where the falloff isn't right in the middle of the advertised range. Yep - it's a long and expensive road littered with facts, theories, and opinions galore :D

    audio question

Welcome to the precipice of the world of "audiophile" Actually - the smiley curve isn't always the proper answer. It's a general answer that sometimes works, but doesn't always give the response the person is looking for. By making a smiley face, you will boost the lows and highs, but cut the mid ranges. The mid range is where the human voice is located in the audio spectrum. There's a couple of major things at play here: 1) The mastering & mixing of the audio of the movie. If a moron did it, then the balance of the individual sounds is going to be off and there's not much you can do about that. 2) Every room as a different response. Some rooms are really responsive to low frequency while others the mid range. SOme rooms hit saturation well before others. The actual purpose of an EQ in an audio systems is to balance the frequency response for a selected spot. This is achieved by using a pink noise generator, an RTA microphone in that spot, and a Real Time Analyzer (RTA). You pump pink noise through your audio system and the RTA analyzes the pink noise at the spot the mic is setting. Pink noise is all frequencies from 20Hz to 20KHz all the same level (basically). The number of bands per side of your EQ will dictate how much control over your adjustments you have. Now, most people do not have a Crown RTA 2 or a Goldline RTA sitting around. Not to worry. There are several free and open source RTA programs on the web. They are not as accurate as a dedicated RTA, but they get you in the general ballpark. To get the frequencies as level as possible, your EQ graph will look more like a bumpy road rather than a smiley face. Just remember to have your Bass, Mid, and Treble adjustments (in your TV menu or on you receiver) set to their mid point before running the RTA. Once you have your spot leveled out, then you can adjust you bass, treble, and mid settings to tweak it to your liking.
  11. When my friends and I fly, it's always in a passworded server. The reason is simple: Some random yahoo coming in and playing the mission "their way" ruins it for everyone else in the server. Without VOIP, there's no way to communicate except via typing and that's not always feasible when employing an aircraft in a combat environment. Now, with Combined Arms, it's even more of a hassle. Pubbers join, start taking control of vehicles, and eventually degenerating into vehicle races or complete disregard for the mission objectives. There's also the ones who decide to leave their designated mission area to go on the CAS aircraft hunt so they can fuel their ego and stats. Password stays when we play.

As far as underwater weapons with a degree of accuracy, there's the Russian APS. That's what looks like the character is using in the lighting video:
  14. WoP is a sim-lite. It has its place in the sim world. Not everyone is willing to jump right into a high fidelity study sim. Games like WoP are good gateways for them. There's not much out there that can compare to any of the DCS titles in that aspect.
  15. Looks like an RTS with limited FPS capabilities. Not the first RTS to do this, but the first in this genre that I've seen. Could be interesting - gonna have to check to see if there is a demo.

  17. This isn't a beta patch - it's more of an alpha patch to me anyway.....

    ArmA III

The first thing I noticed is that right after the shot, they started moving and at least one of them got up from prone which would silohuette them against the sky maiing them an easy spot. Generally, when an AI gets shot, the ones around them with scopes or binoculars start scanning the area. They're very quick to spot though and it does detract from the realism factor. I have sniped though within 500 mters and never been spotted. The AI figured out which direction the shots were coming from and laid down suppression fire on that azimuth, but they weren't hitting me. Grimes, myself, and others were playing one evening and Grimes was racking up the kills with the sniper until he ran out of ammo. Never got spotted and never got shot at. Of course, that was in Chesnarus where there is ample cover. The bushes and such is Takistan, from what I have seen, appear not be optimized for concealment like they were in Chesnarus.
  19. It's easily explained though - BS was a niche interest to begin with. Given the 1 year of "Why the KA-50?!?" discussions before it was even released :D
  20. Consider this: LockOn Forum - oldest post in General Discusion is 2004 DCS Blackshark Forum - oldest post in General Discusion is 2007 DCS Warthog Forum - oldest post in General Discusion is 2010 DCS P-51 Mustang - oldest post in General Discusion is from the end of January So, the screenshot really doesn't indiciate much other than a timeline of releases and a proportional amount of posts for each title. :spam_laser:
  21. Pubbing is like that. Competition play on the hand is alot different. Generally 7 or 10 person teams in which you have to: 1) Defend the flag 2) Defend the base 3) Repair the base 4) Cover the midfield 5) Attack the enemy flag defenses 6) Attack the enemy generator 7) Grab the flag 8 ) Get it to your base while your flag is on the stand Tribes has always been a high-paced game of strategy, tactics, and (most-of-all) adjustment. Situational awareness is paramount as the situation changes by the second. Being able to judge when to multitask or stick to your role can win or lose a match for your team in a real match. Organized teamplay takes Tribes to another level. Tribes was an E-sport before Counter-Strike was ever though of.
  22. Played T1 & T2 competatively for years. The one important thing missing in T:A is that you don't spawn in a spawn-class armor. This means you generators and inventory stations are not as important as they were in previous titles. Except for the airstrikes and the no-see-uhm's (little map glitches that stop you cold), I'm enjoying the heck out of it :) Tips to remember: 1) Unless you're making and emergency grab (aka e-grab), don't grab the flag unless you're going 200 kmh or faster. The faster you're going, the better chance you have of getting out with the flag. Anything slow is called a llamma grab and usually infuriates those of us who have set up a route to allow us to grab the flag at 250 or faster. 2) Deployable equipment is tied to the generator. 3) Providing heavy offense (aka juggernaut) distracts enemy defense so the cappers can grab. It seems like a thankless position, but it's vital. 4) Learning to ski is paramount. Practice in single player mode. It pays off. 5) If you are chasing an enemy capper and you get him, check to see if your team has their flag and your capper in enroute back to base. If so, guard the enemy flag where it sits and return it right before your capper reaches your base. 6) Learn the voice binds! They are great for quickly communicating things. http://www.tribesascendwiki.com/Voice_Game_System
  23. I agree, but with some realistic observations: Unfortunately, there are those in the black communities who fuel the offensive sterotype. My neighbors across the street are some of them who do. I can ignore them driving in at 2AM with their boomy stereo's cranked and then standing outside their car continuing to drink (after having driven home drunk) with the radio even louder. The elderly man beside them though is reacting badly to the stress. 4 weeks ago, I was looking at 9mm casings on the road between my house and their's where someone dumped a clip into their home. In a neighborhood of retired people and working middle class, the house across from mine is a rental house. The tenants have bene raided by ATF, a group of bounty hunters, and staked out by the police at 3AM which turned into a 2 hour standoff which ended in a female resident of the address being arrested. They have a friend, whome drives a gold-colored Calillac, that the police told us to not even make eye contact with. He's under suspicion for more than one shooting, but they lack concrete evidence and have only heresay from others on the streets and their gut intuition. Loud arguements with many a profane word being yelled, all in front of about 5 children where the oldest is 12 and hearing one of the kids yell "F*ck her up Dad!" is not uncommon. The most offended I was with this group was when Grandma was walking to the house with the 5 year old and the young child was taken with my motorcycle I was getting ready to ride. He was told not to look or speak to me becuase white people hate black people. I suppressed my urge to confront her on that point. A few days later, when the child's ball rolled into my yard (for the hundredth time lol) I gave it back to him and said "Grandma is wrong - not all white people hate black people. I don't hate you. I only hate those who give me a reason to hate them. Now, let's see if you've gotten better at catching this ball :)" Oh yeah - the neighborhood petition to have this group evicted was shot down. It infuriates me that there are those on both sides who perpetuate the tension by recycling the stereotypes. It infuriates me more that black pop, rap, and movie stars do the same. Just a very sad, and pathetic situation :(
  24. First off, you will need rudder pedals if you get the Warthog, so takc on another $100-$150 depending on what you get. As far as the Saitek goes, save a little more money and get the regular X-52. It has all the same buttons and exis as the Pro, just not as spiffy looking and doesn't have the MFD that you'llnever look at anyway: http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-Control-System/dp/B00030GSJY If you want more hats and switches without the Warthog pricetag, then I'd suggest the CH Products Fighterstick, Pro Throttle, and Pro Pedals. Right now, there's a special on Amazon for $277 for all three. About $50 cheaper than normal. The pedals are always a good resale item. http://www.amazon.com/CH-Products-Combatstick-Programmable-Functions/dp/B00006B84W/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1333441104&sr=1-3 There's good profiles for both A-10C and Blackshark that can be downloaded from this forum.
