RE: IPD.... I will try that. Thanks Don.

Thanks Stray Wolf. I'll give those a try. Most of my "Stutter" I described earlier is gone once I went to Flat Shadows. Couple of questions on your VR settings: Why do you use 512 for the cockpit resolution? Is it to see the labels better? What does the MSAA setting do? What does the Anisotropic setting do? Thanks!

Wow, very cool! Is the kneeboard builder included in the mission editor section, or is it a separate download?

Thanks Don. Yeah I try to be pretty pedantic about adjusting the Goggles to make sure they are the most clear. Great idea on the AMPCD brightness. I'm not sure why I didn't think of that. Its what I would have done in the real jet. Finally, I try to be really specific about adjusting the seat height. In the Hornet, it's fairly easy to set and I can get a good view of the HUD at the correct eye height and all works well. But the A-10C is driving me absolutely mad. Maybe I'm just not used to that particular style of HUD, but is seems no matter what height I set the seat, either high, low or everywhere in between -I can't see all the symbology very well. Either the Top is cut off or the bottom is cut off at what I would consider a normal distance away from the instrument panel. About the only way I can see ALL of the HUD is to scooch my seat forward until I'm practically up against the instrument panel. It works, but turning around to reach anything on the left and right panels is practically impossible because they are well behind the seat at that point. Not sure if that makes sense. But it feels like I'm well forward of where the seat would be IRL to be able to see whole HUD. Anyone else have this issue? I currently have "Force IPD" unchecked in the VR settings. I wonder if checking that would help?

I had the exact same issue when I first got my VR rig. The issue is looking at dense objects like a city off the 3/9 line (wingline) I played with all the settings but the one thing that seemed to have the biggest effect on frame rate was the shadows (believe it or not). As soon as I set the shadows to FLAT, the problem went away and it's a really smooth now. I have Shadows and Terrain Object shadows both set to Flat. I also Have MSAA, Depth of field, Lens Effects Motion Blur and SSAA all OFF Those settings seemed to have the biggest effect on eliminating that issue.

What do you have your settings on then? I'm with the others here. Most of its workable, but not super clear. The MPCD TSD in particular is really hard to read without almost pressing your face to the virtual display. I'm using a Vive Pro and have the cockpit set to 1024 every frame. It's interesting, I find the A-10C displays and cockpit a bit easier to see fine details. Not a huge difference, but just enough to see a slight difference.

Wow, thanks. I feel like an idiot! How do you get to that function???

Are you asking about max laser energy range or Bomb kinematic range? Those are two very different questions.

Sadly (for anyone going up against an SA-10) - this is pretty much true to reality. And the double digit SAMs are one of the primary drivers for why the B-2, F-22 and the F-35 exist. Most scenarios I've seen show a 4th Gen strike package, even with EW and SEAD, don't fare all that well. About the best way to defeat an S-300/400 is to lob enough HARMs and other standoff weapons at it until you run the battery out of missiles. If/when this gets implemented in DCS - it's going to both be amazing but also very frustrating for most players. Plan to get shot down a lot. Just saying. SA-5 threat should not be a big deal against aware fighters. It's not great against maneuverable fighters and does NOT have very good low altitude capability.

in VR - I've seen the same in both the Hornet and A-10C tutorials where the text on a long section doesn't display. I was just going through the A-1OC tutorials yesterday on the HOTAS section (lesson #2 I think). But it seems to be pretty universal on any of the longer text blocks that are more than 2ish paragraphs. It's hard to quantify exactly. I can take a screen grab of one I come across if you would like as I'm going through the A-10 training lessons now.

You are correct. But to take it one step further, both the GBU-10 and the GBU-24 can be built on either a MK-84 or BLU-109 bomb body. The "GBU" designation is more to do with the guidance kit and the fins than the bomb part itself. Sort of. It can definitely get confusing. As you said, the GBU-10 is a PWII with the old "bang bang" guidance kit used on a GBU-12/16. The GBU-24 (Paveway III) is a whole different animal and was designed to overcome the shortcomings of the PWII. It uses proportional guidance (along with bigger fins) to preserve energy for better range and better penetration. PWIII has different modes that can be set during pre-flight based on what profile you want it to fly to achieve your desired target effects.

Hi Wags, I apologize for the stupid question - but how do I get FPS to display in VR? I've been trying for a while and cannot see it displayed anywhere. If I unplug VR and run DCS off the normal laptop screen, I can get the FPS counter up in the corner like expected. But as soon as I go back to using VR, I'm not seeing the counter anywhere. Is it accessible somewhere else when running VR?

A question for all you virtual fighter pilots out there using VR, how do you guys manage stuff like kneeboard cards, Freq cards, JTAC 9-lines, strike package info, DMPI target pics, etc? Is there some way to see that stuff in the virtual cockpit, or do you just sneak a peek under the goggles when you need to look something up? Thanks in advance.

I don't know how the TGP is mechanized on the Hornet, but on jets like the F-15E for example (IRL), you can cage the TGP to the center of the HUD (not the Velocity vector). This would then allow the pilot to point the jet at a target on the ground, designate the target and the TGP would then stay on that point on the ground. This was before JHMCS and was the pre-JHMCS (poor man's) way of quickly getting the TGP to a point on the ground rather than slewing it around trying to find the point. In this example, there was a TGP segmented box that would display in the HUD and essentially you could drive the jet's nose to put the target inside that box on the HUD and quickly capture the target on the ground in the TGP so you could then go onto employ laser guided weapons. Edit to Add: Like the A-10C is mechanized in DCS. You can boresight the TGP to the HUD.

Still no luck. I set the pedals to slider and tried both inverted and not inverted. The toe brakes still only work one way - ON. There is no way to get them to stop braking unless you use the button for Brakes ON/OFF. Very frustrating! Any other suggestion? Thanks.
-
Cool, thanks. I'll try that.

Hi SGT Coyle, Yes, great advice! I assigned the X and Y axises for the rudder toe brakes and they work - sort of. I assigned Joy_X for Right and Y for left. All is fine except now it is just Brakes ON. Releasing the toe brakes doesn't seem to allow the brakes to release. I have to go into the keyboard setting for just the generic Brakes ON/OFF button and that will release the brakes once I apply the toe brakes. No clue what's going on. I can physically "see" the rudder toe brakes moving when I press and release. IOW, the toe brake depiction in the VR cockpit is moving correctly, but the brakes remain ON even with my feet off the rudder pedals unless I use the keyboard button to turn then OFF. So the toe brakes on the rudder pedals seem to be a one-way thing only. Weird gremlins or most likely just newbie user error.
-
I'm using DCS controls - Not TARGET. I finally got the pedals working (axis mapping issues) but I cannot get the toe brakes to work now. Anyone have any ideas? I've tried mapping each toe brake push to the L/R brake control, but nothing happens. Are toe brakes also an axis command?
-
Update, I can get in-game FPS working fine using the Steam settings (100+ FPS, sweet!) but only in Non-VR mode. As soon as I connect VR and fly using the HMD, there is no FPS display even though it's still selected in Steam settings. Oh well, its seems to be running fairly smooth in VR, but I'm sure it has a very different FPS rate in monitor vs VR mode. <shrug>

Hi all. I finally have been able to set up my TM Warthog and TM TFRP pedals (after some axis reassignment trial and error for the pedals) and so far all is working well using the in-game mapping for the F/A-18C. The only exception is I cannot seem to figure out how to map the toe brakes. I've tried to map the left and right brake to each toe pedal press - but nothing happens. The rudder steering works fine, but no brakes. So at the moment, I've had to map a stick button to be able to brake when taxiing around. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
-
HI FP, I Looked at some of the Grim Reaper Vids and the stick mapping is totally different as I'm using the Warthog HOTAS. Thanks anyway for the effort to post this.

I dunno what the issue is. But I've tried RCtrl+pause and LCtrl+pause and both give me "Screenshot"..... as in it takes a screen still pic. Has this changed for DCS 2.5??? I even tried mapping the Frame rate feature in DCS to another keyboard button but the frame rate will not show up on the screen. Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Great stuff, FP. Thanks so much!

Hi All, I'm New to both DCS and VR. It's all becoming a bit overwhelming trying to get everything set up correctly for best performance and I feel like I'm spending more time going through set up than I am flying. I've tried to read through as much of the forum as I can to glean info, but a lot of the answers are spread over so many threads, it's hard to find what I'm looking for. So here goes with some questions if you all can indulge a newbie. Huge thanks in advance for any help. Background: I'm a retired USAF F-15E WSO and Reaper Pilot currently doing some "contract" military flying in the ME - so the DCS aircraft and concepts are all pretty straightforward. No issue there. However, I'm not a massive techie and have been out of the PC gaming scene for quite a while, so I'm struggling with a lot of the new gear, performance, tweaking settings, etc. I just bought the laptop, VR and DCS in the last couple of months - so everything is brand new. My current setup: MSI Titan 75 8SG (laptop), i9-8950 32 GB RAM, RTX-2080 w/8 GB GDDR6 VRAM, 512 GB SSD, 1TB HD. Vive HTC Pro VR Warthog HOTAS, TM TFRP pedals (pedals currently not working, assume axis mapping issues) DCS 2.5 - F/A-18C and A-10C. Running game through Steam. 1. VR Graphics Performance Question: I am running the game 100% VR. I am currently getting a fair amount of "stutter" low FPS rate and what I would call significant paging of objects in urban environments - especially when looking out at the 3/9 line at low altitudeI don't . With the above specs, I would have thought that frame rates and rendering would be a non-factor. I've watched the Youtube tutorials on VR setup (from Wags, I think) and it didn't seem to make any difference. In fact, my perception is the frame rates seemed to have dropped since I started, but that could be just the "WOW" factor of VR wearing off and me noticing the details more. Even clicking the "VR" preset button in the DCS Options window with the majority of the textures, water, etc settings to Medium or Low - the FPS rate seems to still stutter. Any thoughts as to how to improve this? Are there other things I need to do within the Operating system / Windows settings that would improve performance? I don't think my system is running the Intel Turbo Boost that was mentioned in another thread about performance, but I can't figure out how to tell if it is or isn't installed and running on my system. 2. FPS measurement Q: I've heard several in the forums refer to a specific frame rate number in the game. i.e. "I've never seen the frame rate drop below 45 FPS" or "I'm getting 90 FPS in DCS". How do you measure that FPS while in the game? Or is it a "feeling" thing? 3. Flight Controls setup Q: Does anyone use the Thrustmaster T.A.R.G.E.T GUI to calibrate / Map the TM controls? Or do you assign buttons entirely through DCS? Related Q: It seems there are several pre-set HOTAS scripts out there that people have designed for various aircraft. If I wanted one for the Hornet and one for the A-10, how do I switch between them. Is that also through DCS settings - or is its something you run outside DCS? 4. Are there any performance issues running the game from Steam vs directly from ED? If Yes, do I have to re-buy the DCS aircraft modules all over again, or will they transfer? That's probably enough questions for one post. I just wanted to get some advice before I sold my brand new gaming laptop and go out and buy a full-bore water-cooled, overclocked supercomputer that would put a Cray mainframe to shame. Again, huge thanks for any help / advice.
