I don't know how long you're doing 3D graphics, but I get much better results with Blender (it's open-source, so you can download it from blender.org for free). There are 2 pictures attached showing a WIP of a jet I've done in 2008. As you can see, i get softer forms and I tried to only use one object for the structure of the jet.
