  1. That would be nice. Community A-4 does a cart now.  They just "wink on" and then "disappear" though.  Ideally they wouldn't just appear but would be instanced from static placement on the side with an animation of some grapes hooking them

Similarly, would be nice to see to some red skittles coming up with an ammo cart when you arm/disarm. Generic animation would be fine, though ideally would have the appropriate loadouts animated.

    Hey guys,

Sorry for such a long time between posts. I've been booted from my office since we found out there's going to be a new addition to the family (hopefully he/she is ready to learn the RIO because I'm not backseating to a baby). I'm finally back up and running and have posted the files here, and will hopefully be uploading the build video before Christmas.

The files will also be published on Thingiverse but I have to wait 24 hours before I can upload.

    Merry Christmas!

You rock! Thanks for sharing.  Merry Christmas!

I find the AOA tape a lot better than the E-bracket, it tells you a lot more precisely how far you are from on-speed

E-Bracket works great in the Hornet but not in the older HUD of the F-14A/B (refresh rate too slow IIRC).  The Sparrowhawk and Kaiser HUD on the D were much better, of course. The latter was essentially same design kept for the Super Hornet.

I think this is true for the Hornet and the Viper, but not the Eagle.  The Eagle was probably 75% of the maintenance problem that the F-14A was (somewhat fewer hydraulic problems and many fewer electronics problems) - while the Air Force doesn't publish maintenance hours per flight hour numbers like the Navy and USMC do, it does publish costs per flight hour, and the Eagle is more expensive than other 4th gen jets by a mile; the exact numbers differ from annual report to annual report, but it's generally about 2x what the F-16 costs to run (circa $40k vs $20k/hour in recent years, with fuel costs making up only a small fraction of that difference).  Even the projected target cost-per-flight-hour of the F-15EX (designed to be more maintainable) is still high compared to everything else 4th-gen that's still in the air, and that's a number coming from the manufacturer's sales & marketing department, not an observed figure.

Indeed and both were the compromise light fighter competitors following on the heels on max performance and capability platforms to supplement in quantity what was too expensive in quality.

ST-21 would have been better overall than anything but Grumman is at least as much to blame as anyone. The F-14D(R) program was a good idea but was the short term justification for killing new construction.  The criticism about F-14D being a 'jobs program' is actually pretty close to the mark and the Congressional dynamic showed it (the NY representation in both parties were all for it while everyone else was pretty much against it and backed up SECDEF on that in 91.  SECNAV Lehman was for the 600 ship Navy but also recognized the F-14D was key to protecting it and the Hornet being insufficient.

The truth is that the 'peace divident' was a farce.  US Navy commitments have not reduced and they need the hulls... perhaps not 600 but both the canceled CGN-X and Strike Cruiser and more carriers are needed for the current deployment schedule.  Being cheap has caused them to skip on maintenance and training.  Too many vids of rusted hulls and the unfortunate incidents around of the USS Fitzgerald and USS John Finn and their skippers being relieved, etc. The F-22 procured in quantity would have been much cheaper and we could be on F-14F or F-24C (presuming ST-21 was F-14E or F-24A depending how that played out).  Admiral Manazir aka Nasty was spot on when he told Ward Carroll about the Navy's tendency to backslide capability when new planes replace the old ones before they're ready and the Super Hornets were definitely not ready when the Tomcats were retired.

  5. The ideas that Iran was the stumbling block always seemed absurd. Info on what's already been released (135-GR) ruled be more useful for their 90/95s than trying a digital conversion.

My understanding is more than the info is just not available more than classified,  though ITAR still applies. Some of the programs like LANTIRN and PTID were relatively small scale and not as well documented and simply wasn't preserved since there were already equivalent systems being developed for Super Bug.

And you think it justifies stopping maintenance of the other unfinished modules?

Well some of that is going to be back ported so we'll benefit in the long run, but yeah kinda frustrating to see no updates for F-14 every time there's an OB update...    I've been real busy at work so haven't had a bunch of time for DCS last few months but hoping to get back at it over the holiday break.

Beauty shots incoming! A build video, the parts list and 3d files will be posted sometime this coming week! Everything works, except for the flaps handle, but that’s being sorted (sorta). All of the switches, potentiometers, buttons and hats all work! This is a 90% solution and your mileage may vary based on your 3d printer. But I hope some of you guys fire up your printers and have as much fun as I have had. Pushing the throttles forward for the first time was more enjoyable than I expected. One can only imagine what this would have been like for a naval aviator.

Looks amazing!  Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see your files and fire up my printer!

  8. 3 or 4 times in a row now on different instant action missions only seeing the wire.  Is the tape and plate gone?  Would like to have all in rotation (as well as none more often than the rest).

Forrestal still appears to take damage when you trap on it. It's showing up as "hit" in my debrief logs.

I did a trap today on the Forrestal Instant Action (would be nice if we were about 5-10 more miles out as I have to rush so close) and testing out DLSS (didn't see a wake when I was trapping for some reason but did it see it from F2 view after I landed) and didn't get the damage notification when landing or in the debrief like it did the last time I used Forrestal (been awhile).

Meatball light was still way too bright, though.

If you figure that out I would love to see your autothrottle! As far as the EWS cover, the notches are modeled but I didn't print them. The EWS cover that I printed was just a prototype because I wasn't sure what to do about the clear part. I like the idea of clear acrylic and laser cutting, but I don't own a laser cutter.

Laser cutter is next on my list.  Loving your work on the wing sweep. Very nice.  Could just get the acrylic from Amazon or wherever and then cut it to your measurements with an acrylic blade (10-12 bucks) and then use a heat gun to bend it.

I'd be reticent to give up my Virpil throttle but more thinking to design something that sits around it with a large cavity for the Warthog sized base (with proper flap handle on the left) and emergency wing sweep on the right.

    Thanks blihp 🙂

The rotaries have a small metal ring with a notch on it that restricts the armature to a certain number of positions. You want to restrict to 5 positions like the real one.

I printed both v1 and v2 parts and while the one peg hole for the mouser rotary holds it in place,  when on its side, the washer comes loose without the nut and would no longer be limited. Base probably needs to be redesigned to have the nut as part of it?  Or maybe my layer height is off....

Also have to sand and bore out the Selector Washer to for the PBS-110 Mini Push Button to fit bit then the big button ("Jett button") was sticking out too high so need to cut about a third off.

Is the big Jett Button supposed to rotate or float stationary?
