  1. Ah, ok. Is there any setting I could modify to alter the threshold to keep it as a box at closer range?
  2. Well, to be specific what I really need it some setting that keeps the plane as a sprite for as long as possible. My guess is that when the model first pops up and with AA on it simply renders it down to nothing. So what I need is to edit the distance where the plane turns into a model from a sprite.
  3. Lowering the LOD value in the graphics settings seems to help but targets still disappear and I can't see them farther out. The modellod.txt file doesn't seem to change anything, I tried lowered the value to 1000 in one test.
  4. So is there a way to change when the model shows up over the dot(sprite)? I can see planes fine up until exactly 5km and then they disappear until they are way too close. This doesn't happen in any of my other flight sims. (Falcon and IL-2) I've resorted to just turning labels on until I can fix this.
  5. That didn't fix the problem unfortunately. I could see planes farther out... but as soon as they move in closer to me they just disappear!
  6. I'm actually seeing planes disappear here. I played an A10 mission and my wingman actually disappeared not very far in front of me! I could see him dispensing flares but not his plane. EDIT: I practiced a head on flyby. The target actually disappears once the LOD changes and then pops out of nowhere when it is nearly right in front of me. Turning off anti-aliasing helps but not much. With the AA at 16x the target disappears for a longer time. I think I know why it has been so hard for me to spot targets now... even when I do spot them they go invisible when they approach! Is there a graphics setting I can change to fix this?
  7. I've decided to go the realistic route and disable labels but as expected the issue now is difficulty in spotting targets. In the distance I can see a big black dot but as they get closer the dot gets smaller! I guess it is an issue with pixel rendering but it makes it tough seeing as the AI always knows where you are and I use TrackIR instead of Padlock. Are there any tricks to spotting enemy aircraft? I've tried cranking up the AA to 8 but it doesn't seem to help. After the break off when I should be in visual range I find myself circling like an idiot trying to get a visual and I usually receive a missile that I couldn't see right in my face. I can win against the AI in one on one most of the time but it is usually BVR. I find myself just turning tail after my 120C goes pitbull most of the time when the AI wingmen and I are up against multiple bandits. It seems like the AI will concentrate on the player most of the time. If I am in a Soviet plane I am in a worse position. The signal strength indicator is helpful though. This also ties into missile evasion... since I can't see where the AI is most of the time I can't put the missile on my beam. I try something like the tactical break off that Ironhand did in his training video but I still find myself dead in most situations. The AI switches to heaters and just nails me before I know a launch has occurred. I've been trying to just drop the throttle and pop flares to help this. Usually I get hit. I tried to download Ironhand's missile evasion video but it will only work in 1.01, is there any .avi of his video? In the notes he mentions "Orthogonal Roll", is that another name for barrel roll? Any other tips?
  8. The game is much more enjoyable with reduced effects, it's like Falcon 4.0 on realistic settings. I've also managed to succeed in that AWACs mission too. I have also tried Creative Alchemy... no crashes yet! Though the AI still manages to out turn me when I'm at corner speed, I think it is because sometimes I lay off the Gs to remain at corner speed. I'm not sure however, I'm still a newbie at flight sims. Thanks for the tips guys! EDIT: I guess I spoke too soon, the crashes are still happening. It usually happens right after I dodge an enemy missile.
  9. Is there any way to win the open mission awacs attack? It seems impossible to take down 4 MiG-23s plus the AWACs without getting 20 missles my way. I've only started combat flight sims about a week ago but am I puzzled. I know I am against AI (that cheats) but at corner speed the Su-17M4 in instant action seems to turn better than me (F-15) when I am at corner speed. I got frustrated, bled speed, and slammed on the stick hard and I wiped him out with guns with less effort. Same thing happens when I pilot the Su27 against an F-15C... corner speed = blackout and opponent outturns me. Low speed jamming on the stick = dead F-15. What am I doing wrong isn't this the opposite of what I should do to get a kill?
  10. nVidia Geforce GTX 285 SLi Creative X-Fi Titanium I noticed the crashes started happening after I installed TrackIR... now Falcon 4.0 is starting to crash. hmmm...
  11. First off I'm running Vista x64 with FC 1.12b. I was stumped at why I was doing terrible against enemy aircraft but I noticed a few issues. When I am in full AB accelerating, after a few seconds the engine audio cuts out and the plane will handle as if I dramatically reduced throttle. It shows the exhaust as full AB but it certainly isn't. It "feels" like the throttle drops to 10-25%. Due to this I cannot maintain corner speed, or climb past 25,000ft. This is with the MiG-29 and the F-15C. Also BVR radar seems to have extremely reduced efficiency as well... it seems to only ever work in VR and it does so very poorly... particularly against large aircraft! Lastly, the game crashes quite a bit, usually after an enemy missile passes by me. I'm not sure what is going on here, any ideas? EDIT: Doh! The sound cutting out is supersonic speed. And I guess the airspeed drop during climb is the speed/altitude adjustment. In regards to cornering I guess the F-15C doesn't have the same turn rate as the Su-17? I can't out-turn one at corner speed. The MiG seems to be magically working now though. However the radar problems persist... as well as the crashing.
