  1. There's a tongue in cheek statement in the industry about hiring more devs for a project: "What one dev can code in one month two devs can code in two months." Soo... Yeah...
  2. Your best bet is to find a good independent computer shop that does custom builds. If you have teenage kids in your life ask them where people are going for building gaming rigs. Turnkey rigs like that Corsair can be tricky. They may be ok or there may be forms of "lock-in" with respect to the components selected. The upgrade path from there might be blocked. Also, a lot of these custom boxes don't have great cooling. When looking at machines or components I don't recommend doing mini-ITX unless you yourself are technically savvy enough to know what you are getting into. It's cool to have 20lbs of computer equipment in a 10lb bag but you have to know what you are doing. As a general rule a small case has special cooling requirements and gaming rigs can have huge heat loads. What you want is the most CPU single thread performance you can get. Anything over 4 cores is great. Then you want the best GPU you can afford with lots of VRAM on it. Then 16GB to 32GB or RAM with low latency, matched to your motherboard and CPU. I ended up upgrading the SSD in my machine to 1TB. It's plenty big and enough space for all teh sims I care about. You can do M2 but it's overkill IMO. Sitting at the console the speed difference is not a big deal. Lots of USB 3.x/2.x ports are nice to have to plug all the sticks, wheels, etc. into. The rest is case, cooling, power supply. HTH
  3. I agree with the reco to wait for the next wave of GPUs. Buying a 2080Ti today means getting gouged. If NVIDIA offers the new boards at the same price structure as the old ones I will be buying a AMD 5950XT or whatever they brand it as when released. Maybe try some other sims in the short term if you have some hardware already or buy some used equipment in the short term (no vr). DCS really kicks the crap out of hardware. FWIW I have an old i7-3770k at 4.7 GHz and RX 580 overclocked to the edge of bleeding. DCS @ 1440p with lots turned on in single player just flying around (warbirds or jets) is 30-60 fps depending on ground proximity. The same rig running Asetto Corsa at max everything at 4k is 60-90 fps. If you are looking at benchmarks buy the most you can afford and assume whatever FPS numbers you see will be halved in DCS.
  4. When you say your internet is "so so" what do you mean? FWIW I'm way out in the country with a wifi connection (10 MB/s) and have downloaded all the terrains and 8-9 aircraft. It took several days but worked fine. Dont download via torrent. Press cancel as shown in the download dialog and the download will resume via http. This will save your datacap also if you have one. HTH
  5. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html Synthetics or not, AMD is compelling. How many cores do you need? Pick the most cores with the most single core performance you think is worth the money. Over clock adds a wrinkle - but it has potential to cause issues for little real improvement (percent-gain-wise). Dont' worry about Vulkan and number of cores - sounds like the ED CTO is saying that is a far ways off. We'll be into another generation or three of CPU by then. $0.02
  6. Ha! when I posted that I thought I was replying to the Meteor thread. Must have switched tabs without noticing. I'd totally get behind the T-33 also.
  7. If I were ED I'd make some effort to back fill some of the FC3 ships to high fidelity. If I was a big fan of the MIG29/SU27 I'd be disappointed that this far along there is no hifi version of those planes. I'm new to DCS so still overwhelmed with what I have (F86,F5,F18,Spit, Stang,109,190A/D) but eventually I want to turn my attention to those planes and a hifi model would be great.
  8. vewy niiice....
  9. What a poor end to a fine ship.
  10. Fantastic!
  11. I'd be interested in this aircraft also. And also Fieseler Storch and Westland Lysander. All similar and great planes. These are the types of planes that interest me more than the modern jets.
  12. It seems like Mont St-Michel is there now. I don't know when it got added but it has been since the new year when I bought the Normandy map. No arches at Étretat though. Future update? :)
  13. Great stuff, thanks! Tbese are great skins.
  14. Thanks, that was helpful. I don't know if this is the "correct" way to do it but maybe this will help someone else that runs into this problem. I took the rough metal dds from the default livery and copied it to this downloaded livery's directory. Then I added all the rough metal references in the default livery's description.lua to the custom livery's description.lua. Seems to have worked. It appears that this skin's black Canadair interior textures work fine without any additional tweaking. We'll see if I notice anything with seat time.

    EMINEM KAMIKAZE

Available? Did this get pulled? Can't seem to find it in the files section.
  16. Sorry if this is a basic question - new to DCS. I did some searching around and couldn't find anything that described this problem or if it did describe there did not seem to be a solution. I've applied some custom skins to the F-86. Almost all of them seem to be bleeding through the default skin. If you look at the image I attached you can see the USAF letters on the starboard wing and the US roundel backgrounds on the fuse and port wing. What causes this? Skin too old for 2.5.5? Is there a fix for this? Thanks.
  17. Looking for some advice on my setup (cobbled together used equipment). I'm set on buying a new GPU but what can you tell about the overclocked CPU in these images (if anything)? The CPU is overclocked to 4.7 GHz and hyperthreading is turned off. Otherwise it is pretty vanilla. RAM is DDR3-1600 (32 GB). The GPU is overclocked to 1500MHz, 2600 MHZ VRAM. Any advice or insights appreciated. Thanks!
  18. I'm looking to buy a new video card. I'm currently running a used AMD RX580 in a used i7-3770K system. This was a Hackintosh build that I've overclocked to within an inch of it's life to run DCS, Assetto Corsa, and Projects Cars 2. In DCS I'm stuck in the 15-40 FPS range depending on what settings I run and in general the performance is "meh" at best. Frame rate really drops at low altitudes and landing can be a b!tch with the twitchy warbirds as a result. I've been back and forth between the two GPUs (RX 5700 XT and 2070 Super) but can't seem to make a decision. Both cards are within striking distance of each other in my local market - price doesn't matter that much. How does DCS run with the AMD card? Is it effectively same-same as the NVIDIA card or has DCS been so optimized for NVIDIA over the years that I'm better off going with the 2070S? I need to keep some form of AMD video card in the machine to run the CAD software I have on Mac OS (NVIDIA and Apple pissing match over the modern NV cards and drivers - don't ask). The mobo "should" be able to run both the RX580 and the 2070S if I go that way (but 8x PCIe v3 speeds). OR if I did the RX5700XT I'd only need the one card in the system and could retain 16x but there's really not that much difference between 8x and 16x it seems. For cards I'm eye the Sapphire NITRO+ RX 5700XT and the Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Windforce OC. Both will likely end up overclocked just 'cuz. Any insights? Thanks!
  19. Intercepting Russian Bears with F5s, F18s... new F101 aircraft with Air-2 Genies could be cool.
  20. New DCS user - used to play Falcon 3.0 back in the 90s and then haven't touched flight sims (or games really for that matter!) till DCS a few weeks ago. I'm having a good time with it. What a difference from EGA to 4K! Bought a bunch of maps and aircraft - the F5 and the F18 are a blast. I've taken to using the F5 as a "touring run about" to explore the maps. Need to work on my aerobraking. The Mustang is fun but the 109K4 and Spitfire are like hot rods - roll/turn rate is NOW but the ground handling is evil! Fun stuff! :) Kinda "meh" on the 190A8 - kinda wish I bough the Dora instead. Next sale I guess. I'm not sure if these "wish list" things have been suggested already but I'll throw them out there anyway. I saw some news that a P-40 was coming and that there will be a Zero to play against the F4U. Sounds like the required elements to make a Flying Tigers AVG in China Mod/Map. The P40 and Zero would have to be 'back dated' to the older versions and I'm not sure if a P-40F in AVG markings looks as nice as the slender shark nose of the P-40A but beggars can't be choosers. Maybe the model could be revised... For someone that works with 3D modelling tools every day it's probably an afternoon's work? ;) Also, how cool would a flyable PBY Catalina be? Grumman Goose? Other aircraft: Tempest, Sea Fury, P38, Hurricane, Vampire, CF-100 Canuck (yeah - that one is probably really unlikely - can an amateur with 3D Blender skills make DCS aircraft on his own?). T28 Trojan, F-104? Falco F8L? Oh my. On a different topic... I started setting up a private DCS server and it is such a "non-optimal" thing to install a Windows VM on my server. It's a big enough box and can work well enough with 4 cores and 16GB of ram dedicated to the VM but... ugh, Windows on a server - so inefficient. I heard a rumour that the new version of the DCS server software was going to be a console app? Maybe it's something I can run in a container? .NET Core Linux binary? Anyone have any info on that? If anyone on staff likes that idea I can be a tester. :) I'm excited about the new stuff in the pipeline for 2020.
