  1. I probably didn't make it clear, I run the Index at 150% resolution and 120hz with the settings I posted running a Ryzen 9 7950X 3D and a 4090. But I am not experiencing the glare or small sweet spot. My findings are actually not the same. I don't get any warpage around the edges and its the largest sweet spot over all. There are some glare issues but its pretty moderate for me. The last headset I purchased was the Vive pro 2. Its native resolution is 2448 X 2448 with 120 fov. And I was able to pump it up to around 3500 at 150% res but when you look to the side the resolution fades rapidly and the image warps. And I find it distracting when looking around. By far its a better headset but the clarity was isolated to looking forward. Maybe not so much for others but its a killer for me. Its more of a fisheye look when you look to the side and I just can't get used to it. You might not believe this but the clarity (not resolution) around the edges of the Index are equal to the Varjo. But again, they make a lot of different headsets for different taste. For flying helicopters (for me) I like the Index the best. But for jets those higher resolutions can be critical for sighting bogeys. These are the numbers on the Index PPD which is another reason I like it so much Vive: (1080 * 0.82) / 100 = 8.856 PPD (17.712 sPPD) Vive Pro: (1440 * 0.82) / 100 = 11.808 PPD (23.616 sPPD) Rift: (1080 * 0.66) / 84 = 8.486 PPD (16.972 sPPD) Index: (1440 * 0.95) / 120 = 11.4 (34.2 sPPD - 3 subpixels per pixel) I never tried the Crystal, I had the 8X about 3 months before the Crystal came out. And the image quality, sweet spot, and fov are amazing. I bought the upgraded speakers as well as the counter weights. Its not uncommon for me to fly 6-8 hour sessions and that thing would build a lot of heat inside. I am glad to hear the Crystal doesn't do that. Don't get me wrong, I am certainly not comparing image quality of the Index to anything. For me its the fov clarity more than anything else. And so far the Varjo hits all the
  2. I know, right. I have purchased 2 Value Index. The first one I used for 3 years, gave it to my son and bought a new one a few months ago. In my humble opinion (for me) its the absolute best system in its price range. Every other system I purchased to replace the Index, I sold within weeks of owning them. It has the very best sound system of all of them, very light, largest FOV, largest sweet spot, with a per eye res of 2500 X 2500, which is more than livable for me. It does need satellites that everyone else are getting away from, but the accessory package to put duel fans in the face makes this headset something I can wear for 8 hour sessions. And no, I didn't get them (or any other headset) for free. I bought all of them. But there are those who desire higher res even if its just 30% of the available view and those that love their Pimax, which has awesome res. And none of those headsets are anywhere close to competition with the Varjo. They even added some counter balance weight in the rear. The only issue I have right now is finding a fan control. It has a built in cooling fan that is defaulted to low and after about 4 hours you get warning of possible shutdown due to heat. It hasn't done that yet and I have used it 2 hours after the warning. And it doesn't heat up your face like the Pimax does. Thus far the Varjo is the best I have used of all of them. Is it worth 4K? Given the Index is $1400 and the Varjo is more than double the resolution, I am actually surprised they can provide that tech for that much. But I'm just an idiot for flight sims. I think they know this. lol
  3. Yes, you can turn it off. I can only imagine the Chroma key software is there to isolate what you want to see in the look down for a cockpit. I will play with it over the weekend and see what I can muster. I have to get the pass through working in DCS first, then I can experiment from there. But yeah, this would be a sim and cockpit dream headset.
  4. Video of the Varjo pass through Varjo Pass through
  5. I found a way to record right from the Varjo. I am uploading the file to Youtube and will post it as soon as its live
  6. It was pretty amazing to look down 45 degrees and see everything as clear as I did. To give you an example, its (almost) like using your phone to see your desktop. Now understand it isn't nearly the resolution your phone provides, but its just as clear. You can tell its looking through a video device obviously, but I can read text on my phone effortlessly. So being able to use a cockpit and read the dials and labels will be no problem what so ever. I will try and post a picture or possible a video. There is a record section in the software so I am going to play with it to see if I can post some resolution videos for you guys. I will find a way. lol
  7. I had the Pimax 8X. Never used the Crystal. I purchased the counter weights to balance the headset which was fine. And the Pimax had decent resolution. But for the weight and the generated heat making my face sweat, my best go to headset has been the Index. I have owned the HTC Vive pro, Pimax, Oculus, Oculus quest, Valve Index, and several other early versions. And the only headset that hits all the buttons for me is the Index. Largest sweet spot, largest FOV, best sound, lightest weight, and the front accessory cooling fan even keeps your face cool playing for hours. I get around 2500 X 2500 per eye at 150% resolution. Which isn't the highest resolution but given all the other headset parameters, the FOV and sweet spot make up the difference by far. But thats just my own personal preference. As far as the Varjo goes, the 5300 X 5300 per eye at 100% resolution is staggering. And for those fighter pilots who need to see that extra distance to see a bogey in the air, its a real game changer. I mainly fly helos but with the Varjo its making me think more about fixed wing encounters. Flying to the Super carrier and seeing the ball is just incredible to say the least. I did a test just to see how far I can spot other aircraft and I cheated a bit because I'm not used to picking out other aircraft. I used the labels to pick out other aircraft to get distance. Once spotted I turned off the labels. And I can see the dots clearly and continue to track them at 6.7 nm. Not really sure how this compares to other headsets but thats what I could see. I am going to test that in IL2 as well.
  8. My settings in the Varjo Base software
  9. These are my current settings getting 74 FPS steady which still gives me some playing around room
  10. The pass through works awesome and you can see the keyboard like its real. I can even read text on my phone. Its really good. But I haven't found a way to use it in DCS yet. I am sure there will be a patch in the future for DCS but looking down gives me about a 30% of the screen looking down. More than enough to use external boards to throw switches and buttons. throttles, and keyboards. maybe I haven't figured it out yet but I am using the same settings to make it work in other games, just not working in DCS yet.
  11. Yes, Also, I have figured out a few more problems If you launch in MT without the forced VR or forced XR it works. I put some tape over the speakers to make a shaped cone to direct the sound to my ears and it is plenty loud now. The speakers are directed down instead of towards your ear so the small cones make a huge difference.
  12. Hey fellas, I have the Varjo XR-4 and have been testing it for the last few days. So here are things you will want to consider for DCS. 1. I have not been able to boot DCS in MT mode with this headset. It only works in the original exe file thus far. Still playing with it. 2. The speaker volume in DCS is pretty low but is loud in other games. Go figure. 3. The resolution is amazing. If I turn on labels and find an aircraft 6 nm away, then turn off labels, I can still see the aircraft (or dot) The eye tracking works incredibly well and the FOV is outstanding. 4. The weight is still a bit heavy. Right between an Index and a Pimax. Closer to a Pimax but not nearly as bad. 5. It has to be launched using the Varjo base software which has to launch Steam VR to connect for DCS. I haven't really tried any other games yet as far as using or setting up the headset. 6. The pass through to see your keyboard is amazing, but for some reason, doesn't work in DCS. The system I am running is the Ryzen 9 7950X 3D / Zotac amped extreme 4090 w 24 gb ram / 64 gb of DDR5 ram running at 6000Mhz / ROG Strix X607E-E Mother board. I will post more results later. If anyone can figure out why it won't boot in MT I am all ears.
  13. So I found the fix. After another check I found a windows update that wasn't installed. After installation everything was fixed. Go figure. Put my high resolution settings back into DCS and its running smooth. Hope this helps someone smarter than me. lol
  14. This latest patch is creating havoc in my system Ryzen 9 3950X 32 G of ram running at 3600 3080ti Index VR headset This started right after I installed the latest update. GPU and CPU act like they just shut down every 10 seconds or so. I have the latest Nvidia drivers and Windows update. And my FXO file continues to create logs on every GPU/CPU stall. Nothing I do changes this shut down. Game settings/Steam VR/Nvidia Control Panel changes have no effect what so ever. d788f7479cede82abc71a396bfff1fdd.fxo
  15. Tell me about it. Everything else I fly gets 70 FPS without overclocking. This Apache is driving me nuts And $1200? I wish.
