Hi there Alpenwolf, first I'd like to thank you so much for the server. Having a server that focuses on teamwork, communication and combined arms is absolutely ace. By also focusing on Cold War tech, it makes the conflict much more tactile and crunchy instead of being a BVR missile slinging match, and for the ground the limitations on PGMs and the construction of targets give us a reason to use dumb weapons, which is rather rare in DCS! I've been having a great time in my Mi-8, Su-25, A-10A and doing GCI intercepts.

However one thing I find strange is your position against having a discord. I understand your objections about it with regards to wanting people to use SRS and not discord voice chat, but I think it would really help things if we had a text-only discord setup so that people interested in the server had a common area to hang out in, put out calls for more players, discuss airframes and tactics, and so on.

If you are still against it, would you be opposed to the creation of an unofficial DCS Cold War Discord?

There is one already, not sure who runs it: https://discord.gg/rpeQ5Jjc

    Server News:

    * Check here for today's MiG-15 vs F-86 event on the KOREA! 1952 server.

    * As announced some days ago, work on a new mission featuring the Mariana Islands map has started:

    - It will be an exceptional mission featuring modern jets and aircraft carriers. Pretty much like operation Tiberias.

    - China and Russia vs USA, France (SA342Mistrals) and Sweden (AJS37's).

    - There will be some weapons restrictions.

    - Blue invades, Red defends.

    - Amphibious operations included. Blue APC's (AVV-7) crossing the waters between two islands (10 km distance). Chinese Mi-24's must stop them!

    - Russia supports China through its navy: Su-33's and Ka-50's.

    - No Mi-8's, no UH-1's => No transport tasking.

    - So far, no ET's and no AMRAAM's. Only Su-33's have access to ER's and F-14B's have access to Phoenixes. The rest will have access to R's, T's and AIM-7M's.

    - R-73's included. AIM-9M's included.

    Russian Forces: Su-33's and Ka-50's.

Chinese Forces: J-11's, MiG-29S' (Though as Russian units due to limits in the ME but with Chinese skin), Chengdu J-7 (MiG-21's) and Mi-24's.

US Forces: F-14B's, F-18C's, F-15C's (once a certain island is captured), AV-8B's and A-10C's (once a certain island is captured).

French Forces: SA342Mistrals tasked with covering American APC's crossing the waters. Which means they hunt Hinds and maybe Ka-50's if...

    Swedish Forces: AJS37's.

    - I might add the Su-25 or Su-25T.

    - Also, I might add the M-2000C to the French forces.

More details will be shared soon. As for now, hone your "navy skills" and practice some takeoffs and landings on carriers. We don't want to have aircraft crashing into carriers wasting assets so practice now instead on the server, please.

Got the part that AV8B’s will be activated ones an island is captured, but would it be possible to add a smaller amount of AV8B’s departing from Tarawa? Maritime ops are insanely fun 🙂

@Alpenwolf Could you replace one of the jtac slots with a tac commander one in Phone Booth ? (Since EWR's and ground units need to be activated now and only tac comm slot allows that)
I hope ED will fix this, it really is making chopper life frustrating.

Also, this mission ended today with a win for red side while blue still had Nalchik .Red destroyed the blue incoming vehicle group to Beslan while blue didn't finish theirs. What are the parameters to win this mission exactly ? (I always thought it was holding both airfields)

On a side note there are still people flying CAP Viggen with 6 Rb24Js, I wish there was a way to lock loadouts at 2 maximum 🙄

The RB24J is a must for the strikers. Everyone that I know on the server has kept to 2-4 RB24J’s per flight. One way to limit folks that hop in and load up with x6 is to place the RB24J’s on Road Bases only. This way the dedicated strikers have the possibility to arm up, and the less dedicated will stick with the RB24’s.

Operation Street Fight (Syria map) is back online:

    - Removed all Ka-50's.

    - Added 14 x Mi-24's.

    - Removed all R-60's. Instead more R3S and R-13M1 missiles.

    * I know many of you have issues with the Syria map but I couldn't resist not having it included for the sake of the Hind or basically any helicopter.

Syria is a Hilo’s dream, great to have the mission back 👍🏻

    Operation Open Range:

    - Removed all Su-25T's.

    - Instead of 8 x Su-25's, it's now 14 (used to be 8 x Su-25's and 8 x Su-25T's).

    - Added 10 x Mi-24's.

    - The 6 x Ka-50's remain.

    - Instead of 12 x SA342M's it's now 20.

    - Instead of 4 x AJS37 slots it's now 6 (number of the available AJS37's remain the same).

    - Added a road base for the AJS37's -> Waypoint-4. It's closer to the bullseye by ca. 95 km (ca. 60 miles).

    - 1 x Avenger, infantries and other armoured units at the road base.

    - Briefing adjusted.

    👍👍👍

  6. Ossetia:

Not sure what happened but the EWR stopped working a few minutes in to the mission, probably a bug.

Was struggling with the flight school house. It took a hit, caught on fire but did not go down. Not sure what that thing is made of hehe.

I think it is enough with x2 main road blocks on waypoint 1. The 3rd one is pretty hard to spot.

We landed on the road base several times, spot on! I think those Red Bull markers can be removed. Viggens nav system is pretty accurate so it takes us straight over it.

    * Operation Swedish Delivery:

    - Warehouse at the road base - Fixed.

    * Operation Ossetia:

    - Removed 1 x SAM SA-6 site northeast of Senaki-Kolkhi airbase.

    - Refinery Buildings are now closer to one another.

    - Instead of 8 x MiG-29A's it's now 6.

    - Instead of 8 x F-14A's it's now 10.

    - Road base added.

    - Electricity poles and streetlamps removed (the trigger for removing trees seems bugged -> reported to ED).

    - Not many trees around the road base so no worries there.

    - Road base marked for all Blue players on the F10 map. However, it's meant for Viggen pilots mainly.

    - Viggen's waypoint-6 is the road base.

    - Make sure you park next to the road base buildings to rearm and refuel.

    - 1 x Avenger, 2 x Humvees and infantries at the road base.

    - Mission goes online again tonight around 1730 zulu.

    * I've tested the road base in the MiG-21 with a fuel tank, missiles and rockets onboard and it worked. Was tough but doable. I recon the AJS37 should have it easier.

    * Again, thanks for all the replies and feedback. Very helpful!

A couple of things I need to know about the Viggen, please:

1- How many waypoints can be stored in its navigation system?

2- If placed on a road base, does it feel different when taking off or landing? I keep testing that in the MiG-21 and... well, the MiG-21 is shaky as hell even on runways! How is it with the Viggen?

3- Say you take 4 x Mavericks and 2 x RB-24/J missiles. How long must that road be?

4- If there is no junction or side roads to use for turning around, is that a problem?

    Thanks in advance!

Another issue is operation Ossetia. Was it difficult for Blue strikers yesterday to take out the TA's? What were the major challenges? SAM's? Too many MiG's?

Again, thanks for all the replies. Truly appreciated and very helpful!

    Road ops:

The Viggen is one very capable road runner, as long as the wheels stay of the grass. Main problem are electricity poles, which are an issue for the wide winged plane.

The road that you have made available for road operations on the Catch me if you can mission is sufficient for all load-outs. There is only need for a turnaround road junction, or another straight stretch after the Farp. This way the plane can land, stop for rearming, and continue straight ahead for takeoff.

    Ossetia:

Great mission, still one of my favourites.
I was that other Viggen working on waypoint 5 and 3.
Yesterday was more of a learning curve on how to deploy bombs and rockets correctly. I’m sure that there will be a better result next time.
It would be great if there was a roadbase half way, due to the distances. By distances I mean that one has to stay low in the valleys to avoid the 29’s, which makes the way to the target much longer than the assigned straight line.
I do also agree that this mission, and some other ones, should get rid of the F14 & Mig29, they are overkill.

SAM’s were pretty active around the Kutaisi training airport, waypoint 3. Got at least 3 SA2 launches together with AAA’s ones I popped up for the bomb run, which is pretty realistic. I would keep the SAM’s as they are.

Any chance on grouping the target 5 buildings bit closer together, or reduce by 2 buildings?

  9. 10 hours ago, Zachrix said:

Oh no, this was definitely no mistake, the warehouse on the road base does not account for RB-74s (Same thing occurred with FARPs and Harriers taking AIM9M). Later (my last sortie) I got killed by head-on by an RB-74 so all that is to be done is to warehouse the road base.

The warehouse at a Farp is fully controllable by the game architect. I’m sure this will be amended.

  10. 41 minutes ago, Zachrix said:

The issue with a road base is people will do this: yes that is an RB-74 on a Viggen. We need that shit BALANCED

    283ef4cc61bcb53ffbdd0d7850d5bf87.png

I don't think it has to do anything with the road base itself, more likely that the weapons inventory have been bugged or the RB74 ticked by mistake.

  11. Finding a road base and follow the landmarks to it’s location should be a challenge and used by those that can find it. Fun to have these ops bases around 👍

    - With the Mi-24P having so many bugs it will be added slowly to the missions WITHOUT removing all Ka-50's instantly.

    - RB-24J missiles are now available in all missions.

    * Operation Ossetia is back online:

    - This mission is one of my first and a rework was necessary.

    - Blue attacks! Red defends!

    - Briefing and briefing images updated.

    - AV-8B's and A-10C's removed (God, this mission is old!).

    - Added MiG-29A's and F-14A's.

    - Mi-8's can only deploy Shilkas, MANPAD's and ammo trucks. SA-6 crates and infantries removed.

    - 5 hours mission time instead of 4.

    - AWACS removed. EWR's added.

    - If an EWR unit is destroyed a replacement is activated 60 seconds later.

    Operation Ossetia:

    Situation:

Red airbases: Kutaisi and Sukhumi-Babushara (Senaki-Kolkhi is not operational)
    Blue airbases: Nalchik and Beslan

    It is time to strike!

The Blue forces are focusing their air to ground missions on several vital areas around Kutaisi. The Red forces are therefore pouring all effort into stopping these attacks while flying CAP missions more than ever. The outcome of this battle will determine the destiny of the southern coastal region.

    * Red wins if Blue fails to destroy all TA's within 5 hours.
    * Blue wins if all TA's are destroyed in less than 5 hours.

    Red Objectives:

    Important Notes:

All aircraft (except for the MiG-29A's and L-39's) operate from Kutaisi airbase ONLY! That means pilots always have to RTB to Kutaisi and park their aircraft there (not on the runway!) before leaving the slot. Doing so saves the aircraft and it becomes available again for tasking.

MiG-29A's operate from Sukhumi-Babushara airbase ONLY! Always RTB to Sukhumi and only to Sukhumi to save your Fulcrum so it becomes available again for tasking.

L-39's operate from the small airbase of the flight school at Kutaisi city. However, always RTB to Kutaisi airbase where you can rearm, refuel and also parking your aircraft before leaving the slot.

    Reminder:

You can always land at any friendly airbase for repairing, rearming or refueling purposes. However, you can only park and leave your aircraft at the predetermined airbases as mentioned above.

    NOTE:
You don't have to shut down your engines to save the aircraft. You only need to park it (not on the runway!) before you leave the slot and it becomes available again.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Provide CAP all day long!

Areas you need to protect from enemy strikers:

    - 3 road outposts at the town of Ambrolauri (bullseye).
    - Pump stations at the Tqibuli Reservoir (the so-called Kutaisi Lake).
    - The flight school airbase in the city of Kutaisi.
    - The TV tower at Honi town.
    - Refinery buildings, 1 km south of Senaki-Kolkhi airbase.

*** Check out the images and the marks on the F10 map ***
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Mi-8's:

    - Deploy Shilkas, MANPAD's and ammo trucks mainly around the bullseye.
    - Deploy Shilkas, MANPAD's and ammo trucks at the pump stations.

Note that you can deploy your crates anywhere you see fit or the GCI operator (if available) asks you to. However, the above mentioned locations lack SA-6 coverage and therefore require your attention.

    Mi-8's -> Picking up crates:
Bring up your radio menu, select F10 for CTLD and then whatever type of crates you want to pick up.

*** You can only pick up one crate at a time ***

For picking up a crate, maintain hover over it for 5 seconds while keeping an altitude of at least 7.5 meters and a maximum altitude of 15 meters.

To unpack a crate, make sure you're at least 7.5 km away from Kutaisi airbase.

    ***********************************************************************************************************************************************

    Blue objectives:

    Important Notes:

F-14A's operate from Beslan airbase ONLY! That means pilots always have to RTB to Beslan and park their Tomcat there (not on the runway!) before leaving the slot. Doing so saves the aircraft and it becomes available again for tasking.

All the other aircraft operate from both Nalchik and Beslan airbases. While you can RTB to either of the two airbases, it is recommended to RTB to the airbase you started at to avoid transferring all aircraft to one airbase rendering slots at the other one useless.

    NOTE:
You don't have to shut down your engines to save the aircraft. You only need to park it (not on the runway!) before you leave the slot and it becomes available again.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    F-5's, F-86's and F-14A's:

    - Provide CAP around the bullseye and further west.
    - MiG-29A's operate from Sukhumi-Babushara so watch out!
    - Feel free to test your striking skills.

    * F-14A's have the same waypoints as the AJS37's. Check below *
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    AJS37's:

There are 5 target areas of high value that must be destroyed!

1- Waypoint 1 is the town of Ambrolauri (bullseye) where the enemy has three road outposts.
2- Waypoint 2 is the Tqibuli Reservoir (the so-called Kutaisi Lake). Destroy all 4 pump stations and the two water tanks.
3- Waypoint 3 is the flight school's runway in the city of Kutaisi. Destroy the flight school building.
4- Waypoint 4 is the TV tower at the town of Honi.
5- Waypoint 5 is Senaki-Kolkhi's airbase. Less than a mile south of the airbase are seven refinery buildings.

    * Destroying the flight school building makes L-39's non-operational *

    Important Notes:
    - The first 2 waypoints are not covered by SAM SA-6 sites.
    - The waypoints 3 and 4 are about 7 miles away from the closest SAM SA-6 site.
    - 4 miles south of waypoint 5 is a SAM SA-6 site.

    * If you follow the waypoints and stay on track you should avoid being detected by any SAM SA-6 site.
    * Alternatively, approach the TA's directly from the north.
    * Red operates from Kutaisi and Sukhumi-Babushara airbases.
    * Note that Senaki-Kolkhi is Red but no aircraft operates from there.

I’m also for removing precision weapons, but only if short range Sam’s like the Avenger, SA13, SA9 etc. would be removed.
Keeping a single Manpad around to guard the the air, together with few light to medium armoured vehicles could work well for rocket and bomb strikes.

Would be great if there were more large target objects, just like on the Mountain Cries and Open Range missions.

I have seen flyers attack Farps on both sides, but is it really worth it?

The hilo pads will still be able to launch helicopters and run ctld ops, right?

  14. Here’s two pics showing the RB24 followed by the RB24J. It’s pretty easy to identify them. We can give a heads up about the limited amount available for those that load up with more than two RB24J’s per flight.

    - There will be 2 more slots for the F-5's than the MiG-21's in some missions.

    - This is due to the fact that Red has MiG-21's and MiG-19's as main fighters/interceptors, while Blue has the only F-5. MiG-15's and F-86's cancel each other out.

    - The RB-24J is being added back to the missions so expect the missile back soon over the upcoming days.

    - There will be ca. 40 x RB-24J's max. If the first 8 Viggen pilots decide to go with 6 x RB-24J's each that'd be it. Up to them.

    - There will be no scripting or additional monitoring of which player is taking how many RB-24J's. The Viggen is consuming most of the mission editing time these days.

    - You can spread the word and maybe notifiy Viggen players of that once online. Don't expect much from the casual DCS player though.

I hope that the regular Viggen flyers (about 10 of us) will stick with x2 RB24J’s per flight.

  16. The Viggen is a brilliant striker, but it takes some dedication to master. Many if us that fly it use it for strike purposes only, and trying to stay away from the lighter 21’s/19’s as much as we can. We have almost twice as much fuel onboard which makes it a clumsy dogfighter, but the fuel helps us to get out of harms way if we need to.
I still say that server rules with x2 RB24J’s should be applied and warnings first, followed with short term bans if disregarded, for those that break them.

  17. 2 hours ago, Alpenwolf said:

Knowing the average DCS player you're putting a lot of faith into the hands of players to consider such text popping up on their screen.

I’m sure the word would spread after a few whoopsies have been made. There is a bunch of us watching the battlefield almost daily, so pointing out a rule bender would not be that hard. Just an idea.

  18. There could be a simple solution to the maxed out RB24J load out.
A simple server rules pop up text for the Viggen pilots on startup, saying that a Max x2 RB24J’s are allowed per flight. If these guidelines are not followed then a gentle slap on the wrist should do the job.

  19. 1 hour ago, Alpenwolf said:

So I'd expect Viggen pilots to do more or less the same. More or less means, yeah, go ahead and test your air to air skills. No problem with that. It's just when it's become way too much and quite often only that I'm forced to react. That's all.

x2 RB24J’s is all the Viggen needs. We were hiding in the clouds on the Swedish delivery mission cruising towards the SA sites. Felt pretty venerable getting merge calls when loaded to the neck with rockets.

  20. A picture and a nod for todays Swedish delivery, great to have it back 🙂

Not sure what happened with the Sam's. I passed all the waypoints and could only find 2 EWR's.

Had also the opportunity to try out the RB24 for the first time. Oh my they are useless. Found myself undetected behind a 21, and launched all 4 missiles within different ranges and they all decided to track the horizon. This was in level flight, 1G environment. I always thought the RB24's were like the K13/R3S.
