I am always on the lookout for new, intresting technology. I was wondering have any of you seen anything new that is relevant to BlackShark or Lock On? Also anybody play this thing in 3d yet? Is it as cool as you would think it would be?

What kind of monitor is that your using for the ABRIS? Ever thought of using a touch screen?

Hey for all of you that want a transport helo... how about a chinook? That helo is so strange its GOT to be fun to fly. -
How do you keep it in one place if you have to remove your hand momentarily?
-
Wow that link was really neat. Thanks for posting it. The cockpit was so deatailed you could see the crack in the gps screen. Got any more of those 3D cockpits?

Your probably right about the market being too small. I would think the development for a single axis stick (2 with throttle control) wich is basically what a collective is, would be minimal. I mean sticks now have 3 or 4 axes (4 being a built in slider throttle). Hell the G940 is a whole system with a forcefeedback stick for $299.99. I feel if they can offer a whole system for $299.99 (even though its for a large audience) that the prices I said I would pay are not that out there. Also they would not have to write new drivers for it. I mean honestly there isn't much difference between the throttles they offer now and a collective except the mechanics of how it works. They do the same function. Back to your point though the customer base may be too small to pay for this "reconfiguration", but they would'nt have any competition either.

Thank you Slayer for the trouble you took to post the link. It is appreciated just not what I was looking for.

Im not talking about $500 - $800 dollar set ups. Those are commercial use style products anyway (meaning commercial, non military helos). I am talking about a mass market collective made by one of the popular controller companies (Logitech, Saitek, CH Products, whatever). I might pay $100 to $200 dollars for one (honestly were only talking about 1 axis here with maybee a twist handle and a few butoons, maybee a hat switch or 2). No I don't think logitech looks at these forums. Thats just my prefrence of maker. I think if they got 25 emails in one week though it might get someones attention.

Has anybody heard ANYTHING about any company releasing a collective. I mean using a hotas designed for jets isn't exactly the same is it? Any of you sim pit builders looking to go into business (Oakes I'm staring a hole through you right now :noexpression:)? They could sell modules or step by step plans. I know CH products sells a USB single axis that can be used as a collective that is customizable but im not sure if you can fit it to blackshark specs (or future releases). OK LISTEN UP GAME CONTROLLER COMPANIES WE NEED A COLLECTIVE WITH CUSTOMIZABLE BUTTON LAYOUTS. Like handles that can be changed out for instance. Jets have had HOTAS set ups for years its the helo pilots turn to get some love. (LOGITECH THIS MEANS YOU) Can we maybee email some of these companies enmasse and ask them to deliver?

Well that gives you a pretty good clue what the next release could be does'nt it. This interveiw was pre mid 2008 wich means they have been working on Apache and A-10C for at LEAST two years. Not saying Apache is the next release but with 2 years development time, plus the time till the A-10c release and the Apache (probably 2 more years or so, so 4 years total minimum) release, thier team size, and schedule, I would say that its a pretty good freakin bet. Any takers?

What do you mean it makes people sound like they are in thier in game postions. Can you clarify? You mean like direction in relation to you (if so how the heck does that work), or do you mean like filters to make them sound different (like say make thier voice sound like its actually comeing through a radio), or like background enviromental sounds?

I thought you guys might be intrested in this. Its kind of a keyboard that you can place the keys wherever you want. All the keys just kind of stick to a clear surface that you can put a template underneath. They use a mechanical adhesive. So you could theoretically recreate some panels, though you would have keys instead of switches. (like pvi800, autopilot channels, and weapons panel for instance) It comes with 25 keys that are fully customizable. Ergodex makes two versions. The ergodex version LOOKS exactly the same minus the little logo at the bottom as the CH version. However they use different software and are recognized by the computer differently. If your going to do multiple panels the CH version supports up to 16, the ergodex version supports only one but is less expensive. So obviously if your going to use several units for a custom cockpit you would want the CH version. Each unit comes with 25 keys. The Ergodex version is expandable to 50, Im not sure about the CH version. Ergodex sells stickers for the tops of the keys if you feel you need them though I think that the template underneath the clear surface would make that unneccessary. The unit is usb powered and the keys are wireless and require no batteries. This is a dream come true for people that want a custom cockpit but lack the technical expertise to build one. Oh they are related. I am not saying they are not. But what I am really after is tactics I can use to avoid them spotting me. Its my understanding its hard to spot the helo on radar. I'm curious if that is so how the fast movers cope with that deficiency. I mean if there radar is unreliable how are they finding the helo targets. I wanted there opinion if it was as easy to spot them as they thought it would be prepatch. My goal is to learn from KA-50 pilots mistakes from their stories, and to take advantage of a weakness in the jets radar.......... if there is one. I also want to know about there victories. Did they shake a fixed wing (say an A-10) and how did they do it? Did they shoot one down perhaps? I might later use the same tactics. Plus its fun to hear all the war stories.
-
Yeah I guess you are right about that. My experience with fast movers and there tactics is pretty limited. Though I have studied helo tactics somewhat. Most of my flight sim experience is of the commercial kind (FS 2000, FSX, X-Plane 9, plus I work for an airline maintance base and see md80, 737, 757, and 777 every day so i get a REAL first person view of those cockpits), though I started playing IL2 about october of last year. Wich means I have experience navigating, using flight controls, and basic operation. However I think we can all agree flying from point A to point B while involved is hardly the same as ariel combat. In fact, if you could direct me to some online content to study on the subject (fast mover combat) I would be greatful. Judging from my performance in IL2 I don't think I could ever be great at air to air (I only have 2 IL kills in about 10 total online hours of play) but Im good enouph with the blackshark to hit a moving target while moving (sometimes) and I think I could be a pretty good (high altitude) bomber.

This thread kinda got off topic. I simply wanted to know if it was as easy as thought to find and pop choppers and hear some stories of said events. Seems like it turned into a radar tech topic. Granted it has to do with said engagements but I am intrested in hearing some war stories not talking shop. Anybody got any intresting stories? We already have a few lets add more.
-
I'm curious to know from the air superiority fliers (aka fast movers) if it's as easy as they thought it would be to find and shoot down choppers. I have heard many fast movers say they have not even seen a chopper. Im curious to hear stories of either a fast mover shooting down a chopper (intresting) or a chopper giving a fast mover the slip (even more intresting). Any body have a story of shooting down a jet with a chopper? That really would impress.

Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2. You can only buy it used, or old but never been opened condition. They don't make them anymore. You can find them on EBAY but there pretty expensive (cause there good). They dont have as many buttons as these modern sticks (8 buttons 1 hat). But the force feedback and the resistance "just feels right". -
OR.......... if allowed in the mission you could use a rocket flare. That illuminates the ground just fine (fine as in it sucks but is serviceable).

I have always used the middle mouse button. Though I used to play alot of first person shooters that were obviously mouse heavy. Now that I'm playing flight sims alot maybee I should rethink that stratagy since I have to look down and locate my mouse and take my hands off the stick. Many times I have crashed trying to voice chat............

Can we PLEASE stop using IMHO. I see so much of that it just makes me sick. And the opinions given are rarely humble. They are usually of the "I have superior knowledge than you do, so there" variety. So please can we kill the IMHO acronym.

Tactics for combat against AI rotary threats
ZQuickSilverZ replied to Fish's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I have not encountered an A.I. Helo. I think I would probably prefer to use the cannon if possible though. You could drop your HMS and hold down (the o button, I forget what its called) to make the gun follow your head (with track IR) and try to strafe it, if the range was short enouph. I guess if it were far away you could shoot a vicker but they would get a warning. With the HMS they would'nt but it would be a hard shot. Honestly I just don't know. I think I would rather just avoid them.
