  1. As I understand it, neither helmet contractor was fired. VSI who won the contract initially were having a lot of problems. BAE who lost the initial bid stepped in and said they could proceed in parallel (they do the Eurofighter helmet amongst others so know what they are doing) to create an alternate. Further down the line, VSI have (maybe?) got their act together, and Lockheed have agreed to stop funding the BAE alternate. Probably some politics in the decision as well...
  2. If you've bought it from Steam, all you need is the serial number provided. Open up Steam and start the A-10C download. As soon as it gets to the point of downloading, pause it. In the library, right-click on the A-10C link in your list of games and go to something along the lines of "View CD key". Probably a good idea to save it to a text file for later reference. You can then right-click on the library link again and go to "Delete Local Content..." to get rid of the bit it had downloaded/started to install. Then you just download DCS World, and the DCS A-10C download (1.2.1 or latest etc) from the DCS website and use your Steam CD key. Hope that helps.
  3. Played a lot of BF2 back in the day. Sadly BF3 is also for consoles... and EA have a habit of never finishing off/fixing bugs in the damn games. BF2 with destructible terrain/buildings would be ideal.
  4. Yeah, I thought all retail was D2. Anyone interested in seeing OC results: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=264874
  5. Hmm, thanks for the advice. Slightly annoyed I sat on the fence during the Steam Christmas sale not sure which way to go. Though from memory the Steam prices may not have even matched regular DVD price... Current UK prices: Steam Arma II #19.99 or DVD #12.89 (incl. del from Play) OA #19.99 or DVD #14.99 (incl. del from Play) CO #29.99 Edit: Not sure what's wrong with the Pound symbol??? I've put '#' in for the Pound symbol.
  6. Can anyone say whether it is better to buy the DVD, or Steam version (Arma II, OA, plus DLC), assuming any price difference is ignored? If you buy the DVDs, how do you deal with the BAF and PMC addons which are 'digital download' only? Thanks!
  7. Indeed :) This the one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVXLY-u-SdA&hd=1
  8. Might be worth checking Ebay, probably find some a bit cheaper than that.
  9. Nice. Thanks. Anyone know how you download it as a PDF?
  10. The reason I was wanting the download (similar to the Ka-50 videos on DCS site) was to avoid YouTube's compression :)
  11. I may have missed it, but I'm sure Wags said the producers notes would be put up for download. Anyone know when that's going to happen?
  12. US$35 according to the website: http://www.newhavendisplay.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=22_131 (Digikey: £40.59 for the UK, or US$45 for the US...you guys have it so good). Looking at the actual image a few pages back, it looks like the bottom row of characters are actually slightly smaller than the top. Producers note #2 shows the same thing :/
  13. Haha, nice :D I was bored and just had a quick search and found this: http://www.tecpro.net/Downloads/Character_Displays.pdf Gives a list of their different character LCD sizes (including the character sizes). They actually do a 16 x 2 with 4.84 x 9.66mm characters!
  14. They are available: From: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9052 Not sure how they fit size-wise vs the real thing. (or how clear they are to read...) And your work is impressive!
  15. Count me in for a colour copy. Maybe someone should put a rough poll up, £16.99 for B&W (current Black Shark manual cost on Amazon), or say £39.99 for full colour? If it helped, I think the pre-order system could be good, so long as they don't go and update the PDF copies soon after the paper manual is printed :)
  16. I was thinking about these type of thumb and scroll selectors recently and was wondering whether it could actually be better to have them as digital systems. Ie use a 7 segment display, and two momentary push button switches. That way you can easily have your electronics reset them to default at game-start. I'm not sure whether mission designers can code in the frequencies for radios etc and the game can pass those out on LUA? Just my 2 cents :)
  17. Yep. The manual (A-10A) has it as STATUS, and I'm pretty sure it was Deadman who posted a shot of his original AUX LTG panel which also showed it spelt as STATUS. (And an awesome shot of the panel lit up with the proper backlighting :) )
  18. Had a bit of a look on Digikey, and assuming it is a dot matrix they appear to be very expensive. (Under "Display Modules - LED Character and Numeric") EDIT: Around US$25 from Arrow for an 8 char, but I've no idea how you get two offset rows like that...
  19. Hey! Long time! How'd you end up on the testers team? Still living in NZ? Here's hoping they made enough money off the Ka-50 manual for a colour A-10C manual then.
  20. DCS: A-10C manual - colour??? Didn't really want to start a new thread with this. Searching didn't turn up anything either. Does anyone know if ED have announced whether they will release the A-10C manual in full colour? Or at least both B&W and colour versions? The Ka-50 manual had some great colour illustrations/images, and it was a crying shame they didn't release a colour version. I'm sure there are people who would be willing to pay even up to twice the price of the B&W version to get a colour A-10C manual.
  21. A lot of broadband routers have an ethernet switch built in (the one provided by my broadband supplier has a 4 port from memory as well as the wireless function). Otherwise you can buy a cheap switch, or a 2nd PCI/PCI-e ethernet card should do the trick.
  22. Bottom left of the left side panel, IFF ANT and RADAR BEACON should be 3 position by the looks of it. On the ENVIRONMENT panel, WINDSHIELD switch - looks 3 pos. Mid-way up the left side panel, one of the autopilot switches looks 3 pos. (bit blury). On the bottom left of the right side panel, COMP panel, not sure about the switch below "DG", looks like it may be 2 pos. rather than 3. Does anyone know if any of the toggles are momentary? For some reason I thought some of the emergency flight control switches may have been.
  23. Only one I've really looked at so far, but AUX LTS panel, NVIS LTS switch looks to be 3 position rather than 2 :)
  24. Fahrenheit, I think you may have left the "-" out of the DCS Plaza link in your sig :)
