F-14: Destroy or damage ground targets with A-A weapons.
ValhallaAB posted a topic in DCS: F-14A & B
null This loadout is one of my go-to for crowded places with lots of light targets and some SAM threat which I can fly over, Rapier sites in this case 8000m / 26k feet for safety. I dropped my GBU-16's on the two sites and took out the remaining 4x ZSU-23-4 by dropping Mk-82 bombs as normal while in a slight dive, almost loosing a wing from the AAA fire. However when I expended my remaining 670+ rounds of AP/HE 20mm I still had 3x BMP-1/2 left. I figured I had enough skill to aim my ADL on the target at a 40* dive and boresight the missiles (I fired my 2 AIM-9's too but they went up and much more spread to the sides of the ADL. The AIM-54 Phoenix however did a great straight line for the target a bit under my ADL, (I aimed for the empty area between the two units). First try ever doing it because I saw somebody do a similar thing to boats or a crowded factory with light vehicles. A BMP-1 is hard to crack with the 20mm unless you come straight from above and waste 100 rounds or so. The reason for posting this is if anybody has any similar experiences or funny air-to-air-air-to-ground experiments. If this topic already exists and is alot wider than the F-14 I understand but without my AIM-54 I would have gone home one less enemy down and not as happy as I am that I tried. null -
Specific Impulse is calculated like this: https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/specimp.html It will be called "Isp" from here on. The Isp therefore calculates from Game Files like this: 13595N / ((163kg/27s) * 9,81m/s )= 229,554s As a Comparison, the Space Shuttles Solid Rocket Boosters Isp was 242s on Ground level, 268s in Vacuum. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Solid_Rocket_Booster?fbclid=IwAR0U76UEI_XSu9uyMmW-ieV7sorH4y-cTmtCPLeXGUVowO2t_1LMh3T8ii4#:~:text=This propellant is commonly referred,%2Fs As visible in the Files, it currently works with a specific thrust that is not changing with Air Pressure, even tho it should. Source: https://www1.grc.nasa.gov/beginners-guide-to-aeronautics/thrust-force/#general-thrust-equation-for-rocket-engines Furthermore, the Missile does currently NOT reach close to its Specification, as specified in the two Sources below (see "New Air-Launched Small Missile (ALSM) Flight Testbed forHypersonic Systems" and "SubA_6_2_Phoenix Project Overview"). Source: "nullNew Air-Launched Small Missile (ALSM) Flight Testbed for Hypersonic Systems" Source: "SubA_6_2_Phoenix Project Overview" Furthermore, both Rocket Motors share the same Isp, even tho one is Smokeless and the other one is Smoking (!!!) This is very unlikely, given smokeless propellants usually have Isp Drawbacks. Proposed Solution: Currently, the Aim-54 Isp and Max. Mach Speed are too low compared to the real world without a doubt. Increasing the Thrust (and therefore Isp) by: 5% for the MK60 Motor at Ground level 0% for the MK47 Motor at Ground level would put the MK60 Motor at 241,03s of Isp, about on par with the Space Shuttles Solid Boosters. Most important however is the (currently missing) additional Dynamic Thrust by Altitude: Both Boosters should gain extra Thrust of 268s/242s = ~11% when in Vacuum, so using the Barometric Formula for Air Density at Altitude both Motors should achieve a higher thrust of: 3,74% burning at 10000 feet (see Math below) 6,6% burning at 20000 feet (see Math below) 8,69% burning at 30000 feet (see Math below) 9,9% burning at 40000 feet (see Math below) Math: 10000 feet: 1atm - 0.66atm = 0.34atm, 0.34 * 11% = 3,74% 20000 feet: 1atm - 0.40atm = 0.60atm, 0.6 * 11% = 6,6% 30000 feet: 1atm - 0.21atm = 0.79atm, 0.79 * 11% = 8,69% 40000 feet: 1atm - 0.10atm = 0.90atm, 0.9 * 11% = 9,9% Source: https://www.mide.com/air-pressure-at-altitude-calculator & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barometric_formula For Testing, I have modified my Game Files to match the Math: The MK60 Missile would now reach Mach 4.5 instead of its previous Mach 3.8 when launched at 40000 feet, bringing it right to where it should be, according to both Sources ("New Air-Launched Small Missile (ALSM) Flight Testbed forHypersonic Systems" and "SubA_6_2_Phoenix Project Overview"). Thank you for taking the time to read and assess this, Dear Reader Best Wishes, Florian (Student and future Engineer of the Aerospace Engineering Branch) New Air-Launched Small Missile (ALSM) Flight Testbed forHypersonic Systems.pdf SubA_6_2_Phoenix Project Overview.ppt

Hi everyone, Tried to google on the issue but no joy so far. Me flying with my RIO, engaging an airplane with target size set to medium, TTI starts to flash at 16 sec to impact, all good, good kill. Next shot, exactly the same settings, missile never activates, flies right past the target. Next shot, exactly the same settings, missile activates at 5 sec TTI. In Single player with Jester missile consistantly goes pitbul at 16 sec tti. All shots made in TWS Auto. Is it us doing something wrong or is it multiplayer issue? No track at the moment, they're too heavy and lengthy. Thanks all for your input Regards, Roman

I’ll preface by saying I’m quite happy about the new lofting and guidance brought to the AIM-54 Phoenix with the new API. I’m specifically wondering if there are plans to change the harsh corner turn the Phoenix makes when entering the terminal dive from the loft into a more gradual curve to conserve more energy. The current sharp turn it makes bleeds up to a quarter or so of its energy based on how high it lofts which really hurts longer shots. Lastly, I know the C’s seeker isn’t modeled yet, but I wanted to know if there were possibly any loft profile changes planned for the C variant (maybe whenever the seeker head is modeled) as I’ve read that it had different loft abilities compared to the A. Thank you in advance for any response. You guys at Heatblur do an amazing job. Keep up the great work!

Recently HB was able to follow some leads and finally was able to confirm the addition of the AIM-54C's ability to go active on its own. I'm now wondering if HB was able to find some more things that could improve the AIM-54C's performance (better CCM, improved motor performance, better range, etc.) or even the later AIM-54C ECCM/Sealed models.

I'm starting a new topic since there was a bit of a discussion of how the PH ACT switch works in DCS currently in the latest feedback post. Currently PH ACT makes it go to a certain point (without any midcourse guidance or loft) and then go active at the target. IRL it would go active but would get guidance commands from the AWG-9 until it could pickup the target with its seeker. What we were discussing was the possibility of this switch or another switch in the RIOpit that allowed for manually sending an active signal to the 54 instead of waiting for the WCS to automatically send the signal at the distance set by the target size switch. One of the points of discussion brought up by @Snappy was from what Ward "Mooch" Carroll said during an interview in June: At this time stamp (1:29:52) he talks about how an enemy enters the beam and how you would make the missile go active to see if you could splash the bandit with the amount of energy it had left. This clip isn't 100% evidence of the existence of this possible feature but it's something.

Is there the possibility of more AIM-54 variants coming to the Tomcat? There's an image of an AIM-54C with what appears to be a motor which was painted white while the rest of the missile was grey. I don't know if had a Mk60 or Mk47 motor with an AIM-54C seeker but it would interesting if we had in-game if it had a Mk60 motor along with other interesting variants.

Overall, how well will the AIM-54 with the new API perform compared to the current AIM-54 that we have now? Will they have better CCM? Will they be harder to notch? Will they have longer range because it won't do the high-G turns that drain all its speed in the terminal? Will the AIM-54C-Mk47 be finally a viable alternative to the AIM-54A-Mk60?

Steps to reproduce: Start "Beyond Visual Range" Instant Action Mission on Persian Gulf Order JESTER to set TGTS to Large Acquire MiG-29 group as single trackfile, fire single 54C at 40NM Crank. At some point the target trackfile splits into two as the radar resolves the second MiG-29. Expected: 54 will activate once getting within 13NM of the target trackfile, regardless of which aircraft is actually targeted by the missile. Actual: 54 never activates. It appears to be going after the other aircraft than the target trackfile. See attached ingame and tacview screenshots. Notes: I reproduced this issue a few times, and failed a few times. It seems to only happen when the target being followed by the missile (DCS game logic) differs from the trackfile under attack in the F-14 module. AIM54_test.trk

Say I'm having this problem where I'm out at about 50-30 miles from Backfires and I can't get the damn Phoenix missiles to launch on a track. I press down on the trigger for 3 seconds and no joy. Is there some kind of in range cue? I have Master ARM On, HUD in air-to-air mode and the targets in the repeater. ACM mode doesn't seem to change a thing. Anything I'm missing besides a big, beautiful launch? Oh and when the missiles do launch they don't track the inbound Backfires or in other missions JF-15s? I've thrown together this simplistic "Phoenix Drill" mission and the only time the Phoenix missiles launch is when I'm in close (like less than 15 nm). Phoenix Drill.miz

Hello, I've posted on this topic before didn't have the time to test it but now I've. Last time I wrote this (Under that I would put the test results and other people experience with this issue.) : " I would add later this day a video of this. The basic idea is: - 80% of the time the missile won't show on RWR and you would just die. - The time it does show on RWR it usually shows about 0.5 seconds before impact and very rarely it will show 3-4 second before impact. - Also a F-14 will not show on the RWR when it locks you for most of the time, it will maybe blip in RWR twice or a bit more but that's it. (Tests have been done on the Viper [F-16] but a Hornet [F-18] player that I fly with also confirmed that the Phoenix doesn't show on RWR). *I would try to add a video of this happening when I'm home, around 6-4 hours from when this is posted* " On this post I got the response of IronMIKE, he said this; " Thank you. If this is happening on the RWR of another module, it is likely an oversight on their side and would have to be addressed with them, please. " Before posting my first topic about the issue I've contacted NineLine on the ED Discord he responded by telling me this: " You may need to report this to HB " Because of that I'm trying to figure out to who should I reach out about this problem. My first test were in a Viper [F-16] and in the F-15, did it on single player when the A.I got these following settings, Enemy fighter- Ace, 1 AIM-54C-MK47, at 35,000 feet with speeds of mach 1.0 . In that test the Viper didn't got the results that I looked for it immediately started warning of a incoming missile the moment the A.I launched, but the F-15 did got the result that I looked for. In this track file you can see the F-15 not getting any warning of a incoming missile: F-15 AIM-54 test bug prood.trk I had a track file of that happening to me but I don't remember which day it was and each track file is at least 2 hours. Also I asked around to see if some players also experienced the same thing, I got some of my buddies to confirm that this has happened to them after the latest update but like me they have lots of file that each one is at least 1 hour long, I've also asked around in the ED's discord, a user named FzK#4325 told me the same thing, he flies the F-14 and he didn't have a track file for me but he did have a Tacview recording. he said the it had happened to him 3 times in the mission he flew, it may seem like he was defending but he said the he is cranking right after he shots everytime, by the Tacview we can see the he engages a bandit then he foxes and start cranking, not getting any RWR warning and then he just dies. Is own word (can be found is ED's discord): Das Feuer — Today at 4:54 AM is anyone experiencing AIM-54 not showing on RWR or showing just half a second before impact FzK — Today at 5:02 AM I am [5:02 AM] Got killed [5:02 AM] By phoenixes FzK — Today at 5:02 AM With no warning [5:02 AM] 3 times no warning just death [5:03 AM] It annoyed me so much Das Feuer — Today at 5:03 AM Can you just confirm that you weren't in the blind area of RWR and not got killed by a IR missile please FzK — Today at 5:03 AM I watched the tacview [5:03 AM] And he was dead ahead of me [5:03 AM] Phoenix to the face Das Feuer — Today at 5:03 AM and can you please tell me which airframe were you using? Das Feuer — Today at 5:04 AM I would like if can send it to me FzK — Today at 5:05 AM At first I was shocked like what killed me hehe [5:05 AM] Silent phoenixes [5:05 AM] That’s dangerous(edited) @FzK Another F14 Das Feuer — Today at 5:05 AM Copy if you can send me the Tacview file it would mean a lot FzK — Today at 5:05 AM It is a tacview from PGAW Would U mind If i clip it?(edited) [5:05 AM] Via video FzK — Today at 5:05 AM Because it is 3hours long Das Feuer — Today at 5:05 AM it's better to send me the whole file @Das Feuer it's better to send me the whole file FzK — Today at 5:06 AM I’ll do that and give ya a time stamp then Das Feuer — Today at 5:06 AM copy thanks FzK — Today at 5:07 AM So give me about 20minutes [5:07 AM] And I’ll send it in your dm’s Das Feuer — Today at 5:07 AM yup no problem thank you By this we can learn that he is probably telling the truth. Here we can see the Tacview: (wasn't able to add the Tacview you are welcome to DM me in discord I will send it to you.) look for him (SHARK 1-3|FzK) at 30:55. Hope someone can give me a answer to this, if help is needed I've no problem helping out. My discord is the same as username here look for me in ED's discord.
