Can not open briefing file CTD

Okay so, I had this crash before, fixed it, and now it is back and won't go away. When I try to start a mission/training/campaign, whatever, it stops responding part way through loading. I have to close down DCS to get rid of it, which then takes me to mission debriefing with an error message that says 'Failed to open mission briefing file' or something very similar to that.

 

I previously fixed it by deleting the DCS World folder in users/saved games, but that has decided it won't work anymore.

 

Any help would be much appreciated, I would enjoy getting back to practicing. :)

I have the same problem sometimes ( but only in campaign). What works for me is : after I get the 'Failed to open mission briefing file' screen, I press OK, go to mission editor (on the same screen, not in the main menu) and then just exit the mission editor and start the mission.

As for the repair, how would I do that? I'm using the Steam version. Should I use the non-steam version from the DCS website maybe?

Unfortunately, I cannot get to the mission editor after the mission. When I click to close the error message, it takes me straight to the main menu. It won't allow me to click mission editor on the debriefing screen.

 

I've done a few file integrity checks on Steam, and they had no effect either.

 

I can't do anything at all on DCS, no quick missions, campaign, training, custom missions, anything. It's quite annoying.

This sounds like an issue with the Microsoft's Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update. I don't believe an integrity check on steam looks into Visual Studio files, only their game folder.

 

This is update 4 most have the others based on game installs.

I downloaded and installed the x64 version of C++ from that link and tried getting DCS to run - no luck, still the same crash.

 

Thanks for the suggestion though! There must be some way to fix this.. it's tough to find out what's wrong when nothing seems to have changed or happened to cause the error though.

Remember there are several dating back to 2005 and there were several releases in 2008 along with a SP1 Release in 2011. I believe the issue is with one of them. I would get them all again. (tedious, I know something is missing in one of them though.)

No, no blue screens or crashes. I had been playing the game, closed the game like normal, came back a few hours later, and couldn't get it to work. It had done this once before, a couple days before it started doing it this time, but that was fixed easily by deleting the config folder in \users\saved games\.

 

I will gather up all of the C++ releases and install them when I get home from work in the morning, and see if that works.

I've been using my X52 Pro for DCS. I'm still waiting for the Rockfire adapter for my CH.

So I've downloaded every version of C++ from the MS website and installed them. Still no luck.. this is pretty brutal. I just want to flyyy. :d

After you have a CTD zip your logs folder and attach it here we may find some clues in there

So I had this exact same thing happen to me. Although my experience was pretty specific but I'll throw it out there in-case it helps.

 

I found that when I tried to stream DCS using OBS (Open Broadcast Software) it would crash the game exactly the same way, every time, with the same error. (Failed to open mission briefing file)

 

When I turned off the streaming software, it loaded fine every single time. I actually tried it 8 times, 4 crashes with OBS streaming, 4 perfect loads with OBS not streaming (it didn't have to be closed, just not capturing my DCS game window)

 

EDIT: So I guess in a more general sense, is there anything in windows or otherwise that's trying to access the DCS game while it's loading? Maybe some external graphic settings or... something of that nature.

So I had this exact same thing happen to me. Although my experience was pretty specific but I'll throw it out there in-case it helps.

 

I found that when I tried to stream DCS using OBS (Open Broadcast Software) it would crash the game exactly the same way, every time, with the same error. (Failed to open mission briefing file)

 

When I turned off the streaming software, it loaded fine every single time. I actually tried it 8 times, 4 crashes with OBS streaming, 4 perfect loads with OBS not streaming (it didn't have to be closed, just not capturing my DCS game window)

 

EDIT: So I guess in a more general sense, is there anything in windows or otherwise that's trying to access the DCS game while it's loading? Maybe some external graphic settings or... something of that nature.

 

Thank you for the idea, I will try and see what could be running.. must be something that runs on my startup if this is the case. I will go through and check some stuff! I don't use any recording/streaming programs though, so maybe a bit of a longshot. Willing to try anything at this point though, because my game is down and I REALLY want to get back to practicing.

I just updated to 1.2.9.30604

 

Getting the same result. Game crashes when i try to get into the 3d world. Message says it cannot open the 'debrief' file.

 

I notice 2 error lines in common with the original poster (849 & 346) , lines 244 and 245

 

 

Any thoughts welcome.

 

 

POST UPDATE

 

Got it working. Problem is with a single module. See image. When this module is enabled, game crashes before the 3d world each time.

When it's disabled as in the image, everything works fine.

Removed 1.2.6.17747 from my system and installed 1.2.10.30996.495 with UH-1H.

Before no problem at all, now same issue as above.

It stops with "Cannot open file debriefing".

 

Solution of Fish didn't work :-(

 

Any ideas?

I think it has something to do with latest version. For me it happens only during loading and I simply restart mission. Since it doesn't bother me much I didn't research crash logs and I am sure it is noted and reported by ED.

"Can not open debriefing file" is not the error - it is rather the last symptom in a chain of errors. Usually in the mission something went wrong. But that can have thousand and one causes - every one is different. So it might be a bit short sighted to just assume that everyone responsible will surely already know about it. :o)

 

My advice: post the dcs.log and me.log here.

Hope it has nothing to do with my XP machine.

Version 1.2.6.17746 did work without problem.

Cannot upgrade to W7 as I have too many progs and data running under XP.

 

 

When buying new machine it has to be W7 or W8 but not for now.

XP? You are aware that the minimum system requirements for DCS are - for quite some time already - a 64 bit operating system?

 

But I think, that is not directly the issue here atm. Which mission do you try to run? If these are old missions, made under 1.2.6, then open them in the Mission Editor and re-save them under a different name and try to run it.

 

Perhaps also worth exploring: when you deleted your 1.2.6 installation, did you also delete your corresponding folder under Saved Games?

It was a hard answer, but correct. It was stupid of me to think it is common bug. Since I saw other topics I didn't even research my problem. It turned out that I had one of the C++ packages in 32bit instead of 64bit.
