Abburo
Hi all, I am planning to upgrade my son comupter to something enjoyable and able to be preserved for some time. Right now he is using an 7 years old AMD 6000+ (2x3GHz) with a pair of Nvidia 270GTX video's. He is playing various stuff and lately I made his entry on DCS World. Of course, while we are able to play together it is obvious that computer limitations draw us back. As for your info, he will be 9 years old in August. So, I have decided to upgrade his rig somehow. Not planned a budget yet, but don't want to go to moon with it. General terms, there will be an i5 K version with a decent MB and most probably 16GB. BTW new Z97 series are looking very promising and their price also. My dilema now is related to video. I know what DCS enjoy better, I know AMD/ATI drivers issues and their latest catch up with 14.6 driver version, and I also read on internet reviews where an R290 is simply astonishing. Maybe for now the old DCS engine will not get all R290 advantages, but I really hope EDGE will do. So, chossing between R290 and 770GTX what will you choose ? No plannig to go to crossfire or SLI. Abburo
I am coming back with some updates. First I would like to thank you for your recomandations above. After some more reserches I finally decide to R9 290 because: - price comparable with 770 4Gb - performance rating on par with 780, meaning slightly better then 770 - 4Gb memory, better then 780 - 384bits , better then 256bits nvidia - power consumption on limit of the already existant power supply. Final rig is an I5 @4GHz, 16Gb ram , MSI gaming 3 mobo. So, now it becames very interesting results comparision with my rig in signature, which is a bit more powerfull, running @4.4GHz: - image quality is visible better on Nvidia, when it comes to lightnings. All other details are the same - FPS are also on par. We compared them flying same plane in formation runnig a third machine as server. - average FPS (stuttering) a bit more better on nvidia rig... but with good reasons Setttngs are all on max on both computers, running only one screen full hd, same mods on both also for textures, clouds etc. Single difference on my rig i am using distant view mode on highest (not extreme) distance and the other one only on high. So, as general results this configuration is runnig very well for its value and I have good expectations for EDGE too. AMD and DX11 are known to work fine together. skouras
770. Im still running the old 570 and runs dcs ok but looking to get the 770 next. you gonna see a very good boost with this card because of your old 570 i replace the gtx 580 for 770 and i can fly much smoother now for sure i didn't want to spend a fortune for the 780 and im looking forward perchaps for the 900 series even though theres no need to have the best gpu in the world to fly DCS [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]W10(64bit)Asus Rog Strix Z370-F - i7 8700K - Dark Rock Pro 4 - 16 giga ram Corsair vengeance 3000 - MSI RTX 2070 Super - Asus Rog Phobeus soundcard - Z906 Surround speaker - Track ir5 - HOTAS Warthog
SkateZilla
- 384bits , better then 256bits nvidia R9-290 is 512 Bit, which really shines in higher than 1080p resolutions and multiple screens. Abburo
Thank you for correction Skatezilla. I was thinking to my former boards... indeed 512 bits for R9... and as you said this really count on general performance.
