large display - TV type vs. Monitor

Recommended Posts

I totally agree right now I'm run ing 3x27 inch monitors and totally going to ditch them for my current 55 or get a 65. Been really looking for a 4k at 60hz but I want to keep my nuts so to speak lol

I went from a 32" 720p LCD (super crappy), to a 1080p 32" LCD (Much better!) and when we got a new living room TV I took the 46" 1080 LCD for my pit.The size is nice and immersive, but the loss in apparent resolution (I sit about 3-4 ft away) and the ghosting (it's an older LCD) are the tradeoffs. I debate going back to the 32" sometimes... and I've also been keeping an eye out on craigslist for a decent plasma. I'm not in a terribly big rush though, I won't need a TV at all when the rift comes out. :)

However, in the meantime, a big TV is the way to go. Depending on your viewing distance, I wouldn't go TOO big though.

Is anybody filthy rich here? Or just really dedicated to getting high-end stuff?

Because here's a 65" 4K OLED that's actually semi-affordable: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-flat-panels-general-oled-technology/1529751-lg-65ec9700-65-oled-owner-s-thread.html

Should be available in limited quantities in September (like there are people lining up to pay $10k :P).

Let us know if you get one of these. Oh, and post some pictures will ya?

I've been using a 55" 4K TV for 8 months now and it's absolutely perfect for DCS. I posted about it here, and I've also got a video of it (note that I don't know why the picture appears so blue on video; it looks normal in person):

I don't know if it's the angle it was filmed at or something but I don't think that video adequately conveys the size of the screen and how immersive it must be. I've got a 50" (not for PC stuff) and it's very immersive because at that size, not just the horizontal but also the vertical dimension is large enough to fill a large chunk of my peripheral FOV, even from 8ft away.

Even though it's still 16:9, I don't get the impression of it being wide and short like with my 24" monitor, which might be wide enough to extend into my peripheral FOV horizontally but vertically it's not much bigger than my head and leaves me very aware of the wall/desk above/below it.

That is my feeling as well. I am a bit less than four feet from my 40" and it fills my FOV quite well. The wide but short view is another reason why I have no interest in 21:9 screens (unless they make a sixty inch model) either.

To be honest, I have always preferred the smallest diameter with the highest resolution.

1080p with anything bigger than 22" or 24" looks funny imho, pixels are as big as a fly again and I need to move my head and eyes around to have a glance at the edges etc..

Sure, it's a VERY personal thing, but have you ever tried 2880x1800 @ 15" ?

My MacBook Pro can't really run DCS at high enough FPS but for a solo flight in the P-51 at altitude I can crank it all up, go 1440p and enjoy a supersharp image.

I tried my 40" Philips TV ( we Europeans tend to buy them a tick smaller ) with a few games and I hate it, too much too big too bright...

just my 2 cents from the far other side

Since it is local, and if it is easily returnable then at that price I would certainly give it a shot. If you don't like it after a few days, take it back.

Exactly, and you can't beat Costco's return policy. I'll probably pick it up in the next couple of days. The lag review from here says it's great to use:

I love high resolution and the image quality that comes with seeing a higher resolution on a smaller screen... but I love having the field of view of the displayed image match my field of view for the monitor even more. I have gamed for years at 1600x1200 (since 2001 or 2002?). 1080p is actually a small step down in vertical resolution and vertical field of view, which affects the readability of instruments and looking up to track targets as you pull into them for a gunshot or rear-aspect missile shot.

So, what I really want is a huge screen AND incredibly high resolution. If I replaced my 46" LCD TV with a 50" 4K TV, I would greatly appreciate the increased resolution. But, it would be the same as having four 25" 1080p screens in terms of pixel size. In other words, to get the kind of improvement I would like to see, I would need 16K TV (4 x 4K).

As annoying as the pixel size is with a 1080p 46" screen, I still find it to be an incredible flying experience and will never go back to a smaller monitor if I don't have to. The only thing that would be better is a full 360 degree dome with incredibly high resolution. Occulus rift type solutions have yet to equal the standard 1080p display. If OR had 4K for each eye and a PC could run at least a steady 60 fps at that resolution, I would consider OR a viable platform. But for the moment, OR is 1080p cut in half for each eye... a huge step back for me. Using OR at that resolution wouldn't be much better than 1024x768, which I haven't used since 2001.

Once you get one you'll want three. The only thing that would make my 3 39s better would be 3d on them.

Anyone here use a projector with DCS??

Sometimes, I use it with DCS and a few other games, but I find the image just a little too large for use with the likes of first person shooters but driving sims like rFactor and Shift or flight sims it is great.

In the lounge I have a 50" Pioneer Plasma which I use when I can get it away from the family but normal use is a Samsung 24" LCD TV/Monitor - it still feels small compared with my old 19" 4:3 monitor :)

Here is my projector screen, it is 3.5m wide, 1400W of surround sound amplification, I'm going round Spa in an AC cobra in GT5 :)
