large display - TV type vs. Monitor

Recommended Posts

Sometimes, I use it with DCS and a few other games, but I find the image just a little too large for use with the likes of first person shooters but driving sims like rFactor and Shift or flight sims it is great.

In the lounge I have a 50" Pioneer Plasma which I use when I can get it away from the family but normal use is a Samsung 24" LCD TV/Monitor - it still feels small compared with my old 19" 4:3 monitor :)

Here is my projector screen, it is 3.5m wide, 1400W of surround sound amplification, I'm going round Spa in an AC cobra in GT5 :)

I was wondering why nobody mentioned this earlier :)

There are decent 720p and 1080p projectors for 500-800€ already and you really get huge screen which would cost obscene amounts of money to have in LCD or plasma display.

Downsides to projectors are changing lightbulb at around 1000 hours of use and you do need enough room to have both the projection area and projector far enough to work properly.

I have been looking at these lately, a few friends who are die-hard movie fans have these and have made interested in them as well. Practical reasons have held me back so far..

I used to game in 3D on a 10' projected screen. it was fun. The downside is that the room needs to be completely dark. That pretty much means you're alone in the room. with my 4 monitor setup my wife can join me in the gaming room and read in her lazy boy while I game. I guess if you don't have kids or a significant other (or hate them) then it would be ok.

I was looking at getting a projector instead of a 50" TV but lost interest due to the cost of replacing bulbs. The LED projectors got me interested again, as they don't have any bulb maintainence/replacement costs, until I found out that they're considerably less bright and need a totally blacked out room (like a basement with no windows). Laser projectors might be OK but they're rather expensive (at least £1000 I think), so there's nothing suitable in my price range at the moment unfortunately, as it would have been cool.

RIG 1 I use a 55" Sony and the quality is a little pixilated so picking up the new 49" 4K 100Hz screen later this week. Just ordered a new rig for the 2nd pit so we can do head to head in the same house : )

With x99 and DDR4 being released next week, we've seen a bit of a drop in component prices here. Have taken the risk with a Sapphire R9-290X for EDGE that it will be okay. I know you guys go on about Nvidia for the current but I'm hopeful.

Have ordered a pair of MFG Crosswinds and looking forward to them.

I using my Vizio 55" with HDMI from my GTX 580 and the size of the cockpit is unbelievable. It's almost real sized. Coming from a 20" monitor 2 weeks ago, I can't fly anything on less than my 55" so now I'm ruined :pilotfly:

One thing people should bear in mind is that you need to be no further than 3.5ft away from a 55" UHD screen to fully appreciate the extra resolution over a 1080p set. That's not to say you won't notice any difference if you're further away and in one, albeit rather unscientific, test, people could tell the difference from 9ft away http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/4k-resolution-201312153517.htm but the benefit starts to drop off after 3.5ft.

From 5ft, you'd need a 85" to fully appreciate it and from 7ft, a 110". http://carltonbale.com/does-4k-resolution-matter/

So as far as living room TVs are concerned, where the average viewing distance is 8-9ft, a UHD TV is really a big waste of money. Simming is actually one of the things they might actually be useful for, as we tend to sit a lot closer to the displays and certainly with a desk pit, you're likely to be within 3.5ft of the display, it's more with cockpits, where the seat tends to be that much further from the display, that you need to think about this and consider whether your money would be better spent on something else, maybe an OLED for it's better contrast/black levels, or just saved until something more useful comes along.

I've just completed my new PC build and ended up selecting a 780ti. I have to say that DCS on a UltraHD screen is something to be seen. It is absolutely stunning!

Cannot wait until Edge is released.

i use to think 4k was awesome, then i played dcs in 3d on a 55 incher. lol i can never play or fly at 2d again. Hopefully someday they can combine both 4k and 3d then that would be the most epic experience minus oculus with vr gloves...

That sounds like a person who already knows :) I've just been looking at the quality of DCS with everything maxed out and 4K and everything is beautiful so EDGE should be mind blowing. I highly recommend upgrading to 4K when you can. Will have to be a curved screen in the future.

Nope, I wish. I am just extrapolating from the images I have seen, along with having used DCS on both 1080p and 1440p displays.

  • 2 weeks later...

With reference to my thread at http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=129727

I haven't considered a TV because though I want larger screen real estate, I'm worried that 1080p at sizes 30" and higher will make the HUD text look rubbish. I've been watching HD vids of DCS on youtube on my 47" Panasonic and am not too impressed. Maybe I'm just being too fussy.

However the flip side, is I know my GTX 670 has no probs at 1080p for FPS. If I go 1440p or 4K (downscaled to 2K) I reckon I can expect a 20-30% drop.
