help? AI won't bomb targets

Recommended Posts

i have been working for days trying to get F-117s to attack a simple SAM site

i have three -117s -- the first one will bomb, the following two will not

even so, the first 117 will not "reliably" bomb

note: they're not all one flight - they're three separate flights (colt, dodge, enfield), separated by 3-5mins

they're loaded w/ same ordnance - GBU10 ---- skill level "excellent"

i've brought them in low on the deck, mid-altitude, and higher up at 18k

ROE is weapons free

this mission has SA-11 ---- but i've tried it with SA10, SA6, etc..

they're set to "precision strike" - and i put the bombing triangles on the ground units (different tgt for each member of the strike pkg)

i've had the waypoints close, middle and far from the targets (does the AI not "see" the target? is the wypt too close to the tgt and they need room to make their run-in? etc)

i've tried with F-15Es (they get whacked early on -- at least 117s are "somewhat" survivable due to stealth - but i've found that a few things happen when using 117s.. 1) ground forces don't detect stealth a/c or detect rarely 2) they'll fire, track and detonate, but missiles do not kill stealth a/c, and 3) sometimes they do actually kill stealth a/c)

is there any way to reliably get the AI to attack?

help??

The SAM starts tracking them just as they get into bomb range. They might be deciding to turn back once that happens.

Put a trigger zone around the target, when one of them enters use that to set their reaction to threat to NO REACTION. They'll ignore the SAM and attack. When they leave the circle, change the reaction to threat back to normal if you want.

Also, I placed a F-117 at 30000 ft it engaged the SAM without being shot at. It was able to drop its bombs from greater range since it was higher and faster.

EDIT

If you really wanted to take out an active SA-11 site, you'd probably use F-16/Tornado with AGM-88 or maybe Tornado GR4 with ALARM. AGM-154 might also work.

thx for this ---- will definitely experiment with and/or incorporate one of those options

however, the "real" fix would be to make stealthy a/c.. STEALTHY

(editorial comment: i have a feeling the russian developers of this sim are overly optimistic about the capabilities of their equipment, to the detriment of western technology..)

to be honest, i don't feel good giving the 117s the activity of "no response" if there is indeed a threat inbound

however.... (just thought of this) - i wonder if we could assign the "invisible" attribute to stealthy a/c and cruise missiles!!

--

@excorcet.. good thinking - i'm right there with you and JSOW etc will probably be my next area of experimentation

yes, stand-off weapon capability is definitely a great capability to add/increase in DCS

to be an accurate reproduction of real-world however, DCS stealth platforms really should have significantly reduced RCS / detection ranges ---- its how its done in the real world and its why those technologies were produced

speaking of, would love to see the B-2 added to DCS as well

and don't forget (and i've advocated for this before) stand-off jammers and escort jammers support stealth strikes also - even though they employ stealth, you still "honor every threat" and degrade the anti-air defense network with EA

The F-117 is stealthy, you'd have a hard time spotting it without EWR's (which seem to be able to find it at very long ranges). The issue is, the F-117 can't get within ~3 miles of a SA-11 and go undetected. The AI SAM's will see anything that gets in their detection range and react immediately. A real SAM might miss something that sneaks in so close, mistakenly ignore it, or just not react fast enough to shoot it down.

As for EW, I agree. We do have some make shift options though. You can make a EW aircraft using triggers Put a trigger around the plane and whatever enemy units fall into that circle could be deactivated or set to no reaction to threat, or you could set friendly units in the zone to be invisible, etc.

it sounds like you're saying you pick up 117s on your RWR - this is confusing to me, the 117 doesn't have a radar and doesn't transmit

??

and yeah, i make 117s invisible at the IP - that was a good suggestion, thx

EWR is Early Warning Radar

Ground units 1L13 and 55G6. Last I checked, they could detect the F-117 in sim for hundreds of miles. Ruined a Su-27 mission I was trying to make.
