Need-To-Know
Hey guys, I have one FC AC (F15C) and have not spent much time in it. However I do spend a lot of time in Helos. In a multiplayer environment can your fighters radar see choppers flying: Low across fields? In cities between buildings? When I am low in the trees? Low just above the trees? Parked on the ground? How low do I need to go? Got shot down the other night while I was pretty low....so just wondering. Thanks FC Guys Fight to fly, fly to fight, fight to win. KLR Rico
I dont usually spot them in a fast mover. In the A-10 I usually catch them when they're out in the open, firing weapons or popping flares. Popping flares is definitely the most obvious. EDIT: Ooops, missed that this was about *radar*. I've only been able to reliably track choppers when they're > or ~100 kts, but it's usually OK even if they're at a couple hundred feet altitude. Exorcet
It depends. I've caught glimpses of them on the radar from 10's of miles out, then lost them completely when I closed in. I think if you hover, you're pretty safe from radar. You won't be safe from IR though, or possibly even visual contact. Trees don't block radar in the sim so I don't think they will help you. Also know that lag online causes warping and that impacts radar detection. If you warp, you speed up, and that makes it easier for radar to see you. BigfootMSR
The only thing trees do in this game at this point is hinder the players line of sight and ability to find the enemey. apart from a translucent decoration, they do nothing. To the AI and other things including bullets, collisions, AI line of sight, the list goes on, the trees are completely ignored as if they were not there. Need-To-Know
Interesting. So that explains why ground units get me when I am sitting on the backside of a forest. Just happened a couple of times recently. So how about buildings in cities? Can I hide in them? Learned something new tonight thanks! Fight to fly, fly to fight, fight to win. You can hide behind tall buildings which block IR and visual contact, and mountains which will block radar signals, and if need be, missiles. blkspade
If you're moving faster than like 80 knots toward any fighter they will pick you up on radar. I see choppers all the time on radar in the eagle. They are pretty easy to to identify even before the NCTR kicks in just by seeing how slow they are flying. If you're really slow or in a hover you won't be seen. http://104thphoenix.com/
Altimaden
seeing the chopper is one thing, shooting it down is another. i don't bother using radar missiles, they don't seem very effective - so i only end up going for a chopper if i know i can get close enough for an IR kill without endangering myself. heat seekers have a shorter range against helis too, yeah? smaller thermal signature and all Opinions expressed here are subjective and redundant
winchesterdelta1
Yup you can find them. Recently i found Mustang with his KA-50 on accident actually, hovering with his friend. Killed Mustang with AIM-9 and turned around for his friend. But he disappeared. Probably scared :p Just scan really low with your radar and you can find them up to 40 miles. But you need the general direction where they are operating. Go in close, and when you think you are too close, go in closer.
runny
I think I find most of them but how would I know all the ones I miss? With the f15 especially because in the rus fighters i don't run the radar a whole lot. Either way, if I'm scanning, which I always am unless I'm zeroing in on something, I think I see them all at around 30 nm, when the chopper is over water I seen them out to 50-60 nm. Need-To-Know
Yeah it was on the S77th server I got hit both times. S77th is the funnest mission in multi I have played so far. Shot down: Once while flying near the airbase we were trying to capture. And another time while landed at the airbase - unloading troops - we were trying to capture. I was in the huey at the time (Unescorted). Might have even been a KA50 when I was landed. It was at night (long round) and someone (-the KA I bet) was shooting flares over the base. While flying I was being lazy and several meters above the trees. Sticking to mountains and towns now...find me if you can...haha Fight to fly, fly to fight, fight to win.
