Manual export script installation

Hi guys!

I have to admit I have a hard time to reproduce the export issue some of you have. I’ve moved around my saved games folder, I’ve tested and retested the normal and the Steam edition, open beta or not. And the export script was properly installed and working fine in all cases…

So I'm still looking for a way to reproduce this issue 100% of the time...

Meanwhile, the things to focus on for the export script to work is to:

Copy the Export Script

Copy the latest version of TacviewExportDCS.lua next to DCS Export.lua script where ever it is. (you can download the latest script from http://lomac.strasoftware.com/tacview-dcs.php)

Reference the Export Script

Add the following line at the end of the Export.lua script:

local Tacviewlfs=require('lfs');dofile(Tacviewlfs.writedir()..'Scripts/TacviewExportDCS.lua')

Enable the Export Script

In DCS network.cfg script (which should be in \Saved Games\DCS\Config\), make sure that the export script is enabled:

server = {

allow_object_export = true,

}

hi vyrtuoz..

would you be kind as to tell me which of these parameters apply to dogfighting and which to ground attack?

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

I’m sure they are better peoples to answer this question than me :)

Anyway, I can give you some hints. I would say that for dogfights, the following parameters are interesting:

  • Angle of Attack / G-Force (to known if you are close to the limits of your aircraft / pilot)
  • Turn Rate / Turn Radius (to known which aircraft has currently the sharpest turn)
  • Mechanical energy and the others energies too (usually the aircraft with more spare energy has more options, because losing energy is a bad sign)

As for ground attack, I don’t know a scientific way to analyse it, but I would say:

  • Distance to target (to know how far you are from a threat when you are attacking a SAM or AAA site)
  • Altitude
  • Maybe ground speed (for bombing)

I let the specialists giving more accurate a better answers about those subjects

  • 1 month later...

A few things I noticed in 1.2.8:

The "trail size" does not work like expected. It's either max length or off.

I noticed a difference for IAS in Tacview and the sim (tested with A-10C)

And would it be possible to add AGL altitude to the list of graphs ?

This seems like a neat tool, however I can't get it to work at all.

What I did was download it, install and tick 'record dcs world flights'.

I then went into multiple sessions but never noticed the tacview doing anything, nor is there anything on the my documents/tacview folder. I then checked the manual installation list in here: http://lomac.strasoftware.com/tacview-dcs-en.php and everything checked out.

I've tried both open beta and normal as well as running both programs as admin privilege for no effect.

Opening other tracks like the tacview-demo-blackshark still works though.

A link to a track is available here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/84160163/tacview_test.trk

Hi Vyrtuoz, thanks for the reply to an earlier post, I've purchased the 'home' version now and I love this software. I use it for DCS and BMS and it's great! Thanks!

@Stuka

You are right Stuka, the trail size control is not working as expected in Tacview 1.2.8. This will be fixed in the next update. I’m going to check what is going on with the A-10C IAS and fix it too. Some parameters may have been changed; I will update my export script accordingly.

@Sleksa

I was able to record and playback your MiG-21bis track with Tacview 1.2.8. Could you try to delete your export.lua DCS World script and ask Tacview to reinstall its export script? Often other add-ons (e.g. cockpit or radio add-ons) are generating LUA errors and preventing Tacview’s export script from being executed.

Scratch this post. I have been a massive idiot :).

The acmi files for some reason are being generated in the C:\Users\name\Saved Games\DCS folder instead of the spesified folder. Now that I've found where they are I can see all the tracks that've been made and they play out properly.

Thank you for the hard work you've put into this as it really is a powerful tool to better oneself.

For tacview 1.2.8

1. check the "Record [DCS World] Flights" (under the 'World network' icon that has a 'Recording' tool tip) - should install TacviewExportDCS.lua, etc.

2. setup the "ACMI Files Recording Folder" (under the same icon) if you've not already done so - should setup TACVIEW_EXPORT_PATH environment variable.

3. Now every time you fly or play a track in DCS World the flight data will be captured for playback/analysis in tacview.

4. the Data is saved as Tacview-DATE-TIME.txt.acmi i.e.Tacview-20141017-221702.txt.acmi in your chosen location.

5. Open the .acmi file using Tacview to view your flights, etc.

Thank you so much, sir! Not a single one bothered to mention that blasted "ACMI Files Recording Folder" before you came along. :worthy:

This may be a dumb question, but what does everyone use Tacview for? I've heard of it, and it looks absolutely fascinating. Is it simply an analysis tool where you can look at the battlefield with wider view and more analytic data after the fact?

Thanks.

Yes, you can see everything in 3D what you and all the others are doing, rewind, fast forward, slow down, etc. It's a great tool to compare what you thought you saw in the sim for situational awareness, and what it really looked like.

That's pretty much it. In real life you can't really jump out to a bird's eye view after you're dead to see what happened, but with this tool you can do exactly that, which makes it a really powerful tool for learning and improving.

I use it to see what really happened during the flight. For example today I was flying the mig-21 on a MP session thinking that I was being chased by a phantom fighter with the RWR going crazy all the time and thought I got shot by a flanking fighter while going for a guns kill. After I opened up the session in tacview I saw that in reality I wasn't being chased by anyone but had strayed close enough to the enemy airbase for their S300's to fire at me.

Judging ingame what went wrong during a fight is a lot harder to deduce, especially in a plane like the mig which gives no fancy rwr information. Comparatively like in the first paragraph, getting the bird's eye view of the situation you can see exactly how effective your decisions were and what you should've done.

It can be best illustrated with the following pictures. What you see ingame is this:

cf71c2e1875b33b76681f1f4a058e665.png

And what really happened is this:

Don't work for me in MP.

It only records my flight. I assume that they must be some protection on the server for anticheating that is messing with TacView :/

In servers where exporting is turned off due to cheating concerns you need to go into your replay option from the DCS single player screen, and select the track file of that session.

DCS track/replay files are created every time you fly, and even though tacview can't record your sessions live, it can record the replays of those sessions.

Note: in the replay, you won't get all of the player names. Once you open that tacview, the names will be properly placed. You should also try to record it at a 1:1 speed. I've used time accel and had some...weird results.

Sorry for this time SuperKungFu. I didn’t have the time to setup something specific for this black Friday. But I will try to do something for the next event.

curious if the paid version of tacview would be on sale for black friday or cyber monday? Was going to recommend a few friends to get it.

Have a look at the following page: http://lomac.strasoftware.com/tacview-order-en.php

Basically, the home edition maily offers the advanced telemetry so you can learn more about aircrafts, like radar locks (when the data is available), gear, flaps, throttle…

The professional edition mainly offers charts and telemetry data export. In a few weeks you will get the strategic view in Tacview 1.3. And later, in Tacview 1.4 the real time flight recording (if the simulator enables it, like with DCS).

You can also learn more about the advanced features on my Twitter channel:

What is the difference in the paid or free versions? (Having not used it before)

And the AGL altitude graph, is that possible?

Sorry, I forgot to answer... The AGL graph is tricky to generate because I need to load the corresponding terrain (which can be quite huge). I will try to see what I can do about it in Tacview 1.3+.
