Read any good books lately?

I have seen a similar thread on the Ubisoft site a long time ago. I have read quite a few books in the list:

 

Ward Carroll's "Punks War", "Punks Fight", "Punks flight"

Patrick Robinson, "Nimitz Class", etc

Dale Brown "Plan of Attack"

Stephen Coonts "On Glorious wings"

 

Just wondering if any of you guys can recommend some other books to read on air or modern combat?

Excellent book - definitely not for those with short attention spans - it has tons of useful information for any real or virtual chess match in the sky. You can get it here (I tried on amazon but it was out of print at the time): http://www.usni.org/webstore/shopexd.asp?id=18606 I'd recommend it especially for the online squads out there as a requirement on their training syllabus! ;)

Heres one book I have:

great book of modern war planes, edited By mike spick.

520 pages of A3 format 7 pound monster.

 

It contains Tons of info about any major aircraft flying today. Engeneering details, combat records and units in operation.

Modern Air combat, By bill Gunston and Mike spick.

 

Its a tad old but you can still find it for sure. 224 pages of various subjects. 1/3 of the book is dedicated in the fashion of the picture with the tornado below. ANother 1/3 is spent explaining aircraft concepts, tactics batllefield employment of situational awareness.

If you guys want a book that will keep you off your seat and will not want to put the damn book down... I have never read a better book...full of action and the greatest story telling ever..

Don't mean to be a "Thread Necromancer" but I just got a copy of

"Aviation Classics magazine:Harrier"

 

It's good, I never seen this magazine before. Lots of little details I never knew about the harrier and it's development. Haven't read the whole thing but so far so good.

Things like the Hawker Siddeley P.1154, which I had never heard about before.

Pak Six is well written with lots of combat and a good dose of technical info as well as few quirks that only a pilot would know. The down side is it's under 200 pages.

 

Scream of Eagles is another excellent aerial warfare during the Vietnam war. If you want to know how and why Top Gun got started then this book is it. The book started with a hot chit pilot, flying a Skyray, who decided to pick a fight with an F-86 Sabre that just spanked an F8 crusader. Guess who won? :D

Best thing I've read this year? "One Day in a Long War" by Jeff Ethell and Alfred Price. Got it used but in almost perfect condition for pretty much nothing from Amazon in the UK. I paid £0.01 plus £2.80 postage. What a freakin' bargain!

An excellent book, the best I've read for a while. An interesting and somewhat different perspective in that it covers in detail what happened in the air on a single day (May 10th 1972). This is a refreshing change from books that try to cover a whole conflict and only skim the surface.

 

A good day to choose - it was the day that Cunningham and Driscoll got the 3 MiG's that made them US Navy aces. Also the day that the US Air Force's Ritchie and Debellevue got their first MiG. They also would go on to become 'Nam aces. But this book is of interest to ground pounders too, it covers how strikes are put together and a little about their protection with chaff flights and jamming aircraft.

 

Some nice photos I've not seen published before in there too.

 

It even has stuff about what it was like to be on the ground - from a French journalist in Hanoi plus the British Consul-General.
