OT: MS Flightsim X Terrain Video

Recommended Posts

I posted this in another thread here as well but just in case there is anyone who hasnt seen this video yet here it is again, apparently this is the terrain engine in the next version of flightsim (and yes I know its a no combat sim, but it would be pretty cool to have something like this in the next ED project :D )

Finaly. Seamless terrain/highalt/space in MS FS.

Something I've had in Orbiter Space Simulator for years (and what have ppl using X-plane)

That's what I hate about FS9. Very high alt flight looks horrible.

I wonder if they make some serious flight model for FS X, because FS 9 is very simple. Too simple for me, so much that after so much time I still don't "feel" the controls, because all planes respond like toys.

I doubt it! :( M$FS has become a holster for third party aircraft and other general addons. In fact I cant even remember the last time I flew a default plane in FS2002/4,… fortunately there are enough freeware add-ons to still make the sim something special. Although things can get pretty obese, before my annual format a few days ago my FS9 folder was up to 7GB  .

I read that DX10 on Windows Vista will provide 6 times increase in performance. I assume FSX will use DX10? So, if I currently get about 20fps will I get 20x6=120fps? I don't believe that will happen. What do they mean with a 6 times increase in performance?

You know marceting men dont you, they could use crappiest comp and have 3fps, and with dx they achieve huge gain multiplied with 6. Video didnt look that good at all. Well mountain was nice, but still same old green ground, low or high alt. And wheres the sea god damnit.

Just as a side note this video was shown as part of the Game Developers Conference as a demonstration of the technical aspects of the new terrain engine. The link below is to the powerpoint file of the whole presentation and is pretty interesting, quite technical in parts, but it gives some idea of what MS is working on in terms of the terrain:

p.s. One of the embedded videos in the presentation is missing unfortunately but the MS developer who gave the presentation said the following about that:

"Mon Mar-27-06 11:17 PMby Adam Szofran

By the way, the missing "living world" video is missing for a reason. It contained some super-secret stuff that isn't really done yet so our marketing department only allowed me to show it at the conference but not upload it. Sorry, but it'll all get out in time... "

Awesome Vid, THAT is high altitude terrain grfx. Flying around a terraformed moon of saturn definately sounds like more fun than clunking around in another MSFS incarnation.

The engine does definitely look interesting (there seem to be a few more videos at the infinity website as well http://fl-tw.com/Infinity/infinity_videos_1.php ), apparently it is going to be free to license the engine for non commercial use, so whos gonna be the first to create a free flight sim with it
