Its a pay meter found in most NYC Yellow Cabs. The Russians now use it for when they give rides to VIP's or anyone willing to pay...

I heard they also modified it to accept bar code scans as they sell tickets online....

jk.. have no idea what it is...

No, it's a thumbprint reader, like on the new ibm notebooks. A quick scan and everything turns on, the plane takes off, and automatically puts you on the bandit's six. :D

It almost looks like some new AOA meter, but I have no idea either.

It´s the sensor of the Helmet´s Aiming Device.

When the pilot wears the ШЛЕМ aiming device mounted in the helmet, the head movements are catched with this twin sensor, ( one on each side of the bright - day - night HUD selector panel.

The russians have been experimenting with a new type of lantern system for its su-27sm. From the confidential report its equivalent or exceeds current american lanterns used on F-16's and F-15's.

.. it uses something better than lamp oil?

No vacuum tubes in the su-27, solid state transistors.

Ok, OK, maybe the radar wave generator.

That RWR looks interesting, as doen the fuel guage, that shows the remaining fuel in kg above the white bars and fuel flow. Too bad we have a blurry bitmap in lomac instead.

Some Flankers have reportedly been re-fitted with the newer "Pastel" radar warning system, which uses the HDD as threat display :) .

On the other hand, if the cockpit in the photo is that of a dedicated test or flight display aircraft, the SPO-15 display may simply have been removed because there is no need for it.

As far as the flat green box in the upper left corner, I tend to think that it is a flight recorder......or perhaps a NAV aide.

Cheers,

What LCD :D

The green thingy doesn't appear to be fixet to the cockpit... could be just some pre/post-flight gismo
