Echo38 Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 The most interesting part of this to me is that real-life Great War replica operators have sought out people within the DCS community, regarding developing an aircraft for the sim. As far as I know, this is a first in the history of flight sims, that a real-life warbird pilot unrelated to the development of flight sims would be impressed enough with a P.C. flight sim to actively express interest in aiding its development. Great War airplanes aren't my dish of tea, but I think it would be great for the flight simming community if one of the experienced third-party DCS developers were to do a maximum-fidelity module for some of the renowned First World War fighters. Rise of Flight generally does a very good job of portraying the physics of flying and so on, but it doesn't model full systems management, so for those who are looking for the closest thing they can get to flying the real airplane, there's something missing. Therefore, there's still room for a "DCS standard" (i.e. max-fidelity, full engine/systems management) portrayal of Great War aircraft, and saying "no need for that, we have RoF" overlooks something important. I myself am not much interested in flying Great War, because Second World War and Korean War aircraft are where my heart is. However, there are plenty of people who would buy a max-fidelity Great War fighter module. And, happily, there appears to be an increasing number of third-party developers who are willing and able to do work of this sort.

FlyingHighAU Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I'm here for modern jets, but when I think about Oculus Rift and the open air of a WW1 plane it sounds very awesome to me.
SeaW0lf Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 (edited) It would be great to see some WWI planes represented by a professional team. Even if they only make a few of them -- and by the way DCS do things it would be the most notorious scouts -- it would still make for a good dogfight arena. They will probably do a detailed research and be more professional and not so crowd oriented, and this is a good way to sell the planes, to restore WWI prowess, since 777 Studios flat leveled the almost entire lineup of rotary scouts of Rise of Flight with the Christmas overhaul of 2014, notably Sopwith Camel, Fokker Dr.I, Sopwith Tripe and Sopwith Pup. All of this without any research, just to please people who don't have any knowledge of aviation history. An example is the Sopwith tripe, better than Albatros D.III in all respects, including speed (historically speaking). It was one of the best flight models of ROF, a pleasure to fly and very challenging, not for the usual pilot, but with the Christmas overhaul it became an old scabby dog. They literally killed a legend of WWI. More or less the same goes to the other affected rotary planes. What was to be a fix in a couple of planes to make it right -- D.III and D.Va especially -- ended up being a mess-up of the whole middle lineup of fighters. What they did was so nonsensical that the planes specs shown on the website are still the original ones, even after they remodeled the website. The new people have absolutely no idea what they are buying 'into'. The game became simply useless for competitive pilots who research and have a good idea of how things were. They also use an "intuitive" flight model, so they can't get the altitude performance right. Their speed charts for altitude and max speed are so bogus that it can hardly be called a simulator in modern standards. So, yeah, would be nice to see a professional / competitive team working on these planes for a change. I would jump right in, because I dearly miss my ROF mounts. Never flew 'them' again. NeilWillis Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Interesting to read that some people here think WW2 has been well, covered elsewhere. If you think that, then obviously you haven't really discovered the depth of detail in the DCS World stuff yet. WW1 - definitely something to add to the list of future developments in my opinion. DCS World is after all a sandbox, and why should any era of air combat be excluded? There is of course, however, a long list of stuff we'd like to see come to fruition first, and given the lead times for projects, I don't suppose we'll see anything with a rotary engine in the next couple of years. But hell yes, I'd want to buy and fly a Camel, a Spad, AND a DRI, and anything else that comes along. But that's just me.
Roadrunner Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Official Word DCS is a true "sandbox" simulation that can and will cover multiple time periods covering many types of combat and civilian units. if anyone creates such a module, why not? the more the merrier ;) and for all those "ED should focus on...", i would believe they have enough work to do anyway, but someone will do a WW1 in the future eventualy, and thats good. BTW: although other sims cover certain aviation times, i for one LOVE to have all stuff in ONE game, even though i wait for the hornet to start actual combat flying, i realy enjoy just flying the old birds in the meantime ;) regards, RR [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "There's nothing to be gained by second guessing yourself.
